Claims priority, application France November 14', 1952 a 2 Claims. or. 154-116) The present invention relates to belts and bracelets formed by two leather strips joined together by their flesh sides. V p y In the manufacture of belts and bracelets of this kind, the two strips are either cut out simultaneously from two pieces of leather which have been glued together, or two strips of the same Width are glued together. In both cases, in order to avoid the unsightly appearance of the leather flesh showing on the cut edges, the four angles of the whole article, that is to say the outer angles of each strip are blunted and rounded, whereafter the thus pre pared edges are smoothed or slicked so as to compress the fibers of the leather and to prepare them for the final application of a dye, and sometimes of a varnish, having a color matching that of the grain-side of the leather.
This method is very expensive and furthermore does not always yield perfect results, for on the one hand a perfect smoothing or slicking is sometimes difficult to be obtained and on the other hand leather treated by certain tanning processes, particularly by chrome-tanning, is difficult to be dyed. in any case, this known method does not make it possible to manufacture belts and bracelets of the kind referred to which are made of leathers of different colors, for it is practically impossible to dye the edges of the article neatly in two colors when said edges'have been prepared in the above described manner.
The present invention has for one of its objects a method for the manufacture of belts and bracelets formed by two leather strips ioined together by their flesh-sides, which avoids the above mentioned drawbacks of the known methods.
The method according to the invention is essentially characterised in that the inner sides of the edges of the previously and separately cut out leather strips are chamfered and then singed-by the method applied in the shoe manufacture, particularly to the visible edges of piece of leather added to the upper of a shoe-so that the grain side of the leather is caused to retract and forms along each edge of each strip a round-off which conceals the edge of the flesh of the leather, whereafter the two strips are joined together by their flesh-sides so that the said round-offs meet on each edge of the article.
From the foregoing it will be understood that since the edges of the grain-sides of the two leather strips are in contact with each other, there subsists no discontinuity of the grain side of the leather. it is thus no more necessary to blunt, round, smooth and dye the outer angles of the leather strips, and the obtained article presents, as compared with the articles made by the older method which includes these operations, a much more perfect and also more durable finish, since the dyeing of the edges, which is likely to lose color, has been done away with.
The present method also makes it possible to manufacture two-color belts and bracelets. by using two leather strips of different colors, without the appearance of an intermediate color along the junction-edges.
The invention covers obviously also the articles manufactured by the above defined method.
The appended drawing shows the successive .stepsof I the manufacture of a belt by the method according to the. i
invention.
Fig. 1 is an enlarged cross section of the rough strip "cutout of apiece of leather.
Fig. 2 is a similar section of thesame strip, vafter the inner edges of the same have been singed.
Fig. 3 is a cross section of the finished belt.
According to the invention two leather strips 1 are first cut tothe same width. These strips may have the same color or different colors.
. The inner edges, that is to say the edges of the fleshside 1a of each strip are then chamfered and singedby the method applied in the shoe manufacture, particularly to the visible edges of pieces of leather added to the j upper of a shoe-so that due to the action of the heat the grain-side 1b of the leather is caused to retract and forms a round-oil a (Fig. 2) which conceals the edge of the flesh of the'leather on each edge of the strip which has been thus treated. 1
Finally, as shown on Fig. 3, the two strips are joined together by their flesh-sides, in the usual manner, that is to say by gluing, without or with stitching, in such manner that the round-offs a of the two strips meet on each edge of the article and that the periphery of the section of said article is formed by the grain-sides of the two strips, without discontinuity.
I claim:
l. A method for the manufacture of leather belts and bracelets formed by two elongated leather strips, each having a flesh-side and a grain-side and joined together by their flesh-side, and having a continuous outer surface of leather grain-side, said method comprising: chamfering the two longitudinal side-edges of each strip, and while said strips are separate from each other, on the flesh-side thereof and over their entire length; singeing 2. A method for the manufacture of leather belts and.
bracelets formed by two elongated leather strips, each having a flesh-side and a grain-side and joined together by their flesh-side, and having a continuous ridgeless and smooth outer surface of leather grain-side, said method comprising: chamfering the two longitudinal side-edges of each strip, and while said strips are separate from each other, on the flesh-side thereof and over their entire,
length; singeing said chamfered side-edges, while said strips are separate from each other, thereby retracting the grain-side of said strips and forming longitudinally of each of said side-edges an outer grain-side round-off having a free edge and concealing said flesh-side; thereafter joining said two strips by their flesh-side; and simultaneously over the length of said joined strips, joining the free edge of the round-off on one side of one strip without overlap to the free edge of the round-off on the corresponding side of the other strip.
