WASH-BOILER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,809, dated March 13, 1883.

Application filed July 19, 1882. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL BUNKER, of Stoddard,in the county of Cheshire and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in WVash-Boilers, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.

This invention has reference to that class of boilers commonly used for the purpose of boil- 1o ing clothes for laundry purposes, and has for its object to provide a suitable device to be used in connection with the boiler for the purpose of holding down the clothes, to prevent them from being pushed up by the steam and water, and thereby to prevent the water from gunning over onto the stove.

To this end my invention consists in the peculiar manner of attaching a perforated plate or frame, of wire, adapted to occupy a horizo zontal position in the boiler above the clothes,

as fully hereinafter explained.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved attachment for wash-boilers, the two parts being disconnected, to better exhibit, the

formation thereof. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a wash-boiler with my improved attachment applied thereto, the boiler itself being cut away on one side, to show the combination.

The frame A is made to conform approximately to the interior of the boiler in which it is intended for use, and should be somewhat smaller than the boiler itself, so as to permit ofslight endwise movement when placed therein. The frame should be provided with one or more tie-rods, a, to give strength and firmness. Said frame has on one end a curved angular hook or arm, B, which may be formed of an independent piece of wire bentinto the format.-

0 tion shown in the drawings, and then securely fastened to the frame; or, instead of this, the tie-rods a may be extended and the ends thereof bent to iorm the arm, substantially as shown. The material of which the arm is made should be slightly flexible, so as to become resilient when contracted, as referred to hereinafter.

The second feature of my invention consists in the irregularly-shaped hook H, for convenience termed a.knee-hook. The formation 0 of this knee-hook is clearly shown in the drawings annexed hereto. It is preferably constructed of wire, a single piece of which will suffice, and may be given the formation shown in the drawings by means well known to those skilled in the art of working wire.

In the use of this my new invention the clothes should first be put into the boiler D, whereupon the attachment may be applied by engaging the outer end of the arm G into the handle 2 of the boiler and depressing the frame into the boiler itself, thus contracting the angle of the arm B, so that when the knee-hook H is placed in positionthat is, into engagement, as shown, with the opposite handle, 3, on the boiler-and the pressure on the frame is removed, the resiliency of the wire arm B will lift the frameAfirmly up against the books I) on the knee-hook H. The frame A is thus secured and prevented from coming out of the boiler until it is again depressed from the top and the knee-hook H is first removed. I

I prefer to construct the whole of wire, as shown,in which case the clothes may be stirred or poked about, in the usual way, by a stick operated down through the openings between the wires; but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to a frame constructed of wire, as other material may obviously be employed.

I claim- 1. Combined with a wash-boiler having ordinary ears or handles, first, a trame having a spring-arm, B, to engage with the handle at one end of the boiler, and, second, a removable fastening device for securing such frame to the handle on the opposite side of the boiler.

2. The combination, with a wash-boiler, of a frame formed with a spring-arm, B, at one end, to secure it to one end of such boiler, and a removable device to secure it to the other end, as described.

3. An attachment for wash -boilers, constructed in two parts, consisting of a skeleton 5 frame or plate, of wire, having an outline similar to but slightly smaller than the interior of the boiler itself, with an angular arm formed on one end, and reaching upward and outward to engage with the handle on the boiler, and also an independent curved knee, of wire, adapted to engage with the opposite handle on the 2 V l 273,809 i boiler and reach over into the boiler to engage In testimony whereof I have signed this with the contiguous end of the said frame, to specification in the presence of two witnesses. to support the same, the said parts being constructed and adapted to combine with the DANIEL BUNKER.
