DANIEL KAUFMAN, OF BOILING SPRING, PENNSYLVANIA.
HOG-ELEVATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 27,368, dated March 6, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL Kauriux, of Boiling Spring, in the county of Cumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Device for Elevating and Supporting Slaughtered Hogs for the Purpose of Dressing the Same; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1, is an elevation of my invention. Fig. 2, a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
The object of this invention is to obtain a simple device to facilitate the hitherto laborious manipulation attending the elevating and sus )ending of slaughtered hogs preparatory to dressing the same; a device that may be operated, if necessary, by a single individual and thereby not only economize in labor, but also greatly expedite the work, even with a less number of hands than is usually required.
To enable those skilled in the art, to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a vertical post, or upright which is firmly secured to a suitable base B. This post or upright has a series of radial bars a, fitted in its upper part, four bars are shown in Fig. 2, but more or less may be used as desired. The post A, is of sufficient length to allow hogs to be suspended from the bars a, without touching the ground.
On the top of the post or upright A, there is secured a revolving cap C, and to this cap, two short uprights Z) I) are attached. which uprights have a shaft 0, fitted between them. On this shaft 0, a lever D is placed, the former serving as a fulcrum for the latter. The shaft 0, is near the outer edge of the lever, that is to say, the end where the weight to be raised is applied, and to the lever near this end, a swivel plate E is attached, said plate having chains F, secured to its end, to the lower ends of which a gambrel G is attached.
By having the lever D secured to the revolving cap C, the former may be turned around in any direction, and tilted or inclined so as to bring the chains F, and gambrel G near the ground. The gambrel may then be attached to the hog as usual, and the latter elevated by depressing the long end of the lever, as shown in red in Fig. 1, and the hog suspended on one or two of the bars a.
By having the lever D, arranged to rotate, all the bars a, may be readily supplied with the weight or load intended for it, and the principal part of the labor hitherto required to elevate and suspend hogs avoided. The whole device is extremely simple, and may be constructed at a trifling expense.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
The post or upright A, provided with the radial bars a, in connection with the revolv in cap C, with lever D, attached, the whole being arranged as shown, to form a new and useful device for the purpose specified.
DANIEL KAUFMAN. l i itnesses LEVI J GRIFFITH, I. A. KAUFMAN.
