LANDING NET. No. 273,651. Patented Mar. 6,1881% c e l e N. PETERS. Phohrmhognuw wuhimon. ac.
NITE
STAT S PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD J. WELLES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM MILLS AND THOMAS BATE MILLS,
OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
'LAND|NG=NET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,651, dated March 6, 1883. Application filed December 26, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known thatLRICHARD J. WELLEs, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Landing Net Rings and Handles, of which the following is a specili- CallOll.
My invention relatestothe landing-net rings which are detachable from their handles, and
which may he slipped inside the handles, when the latter are hollow, or otherwise packed so as to be conveniently carried.
The invention consists in novel details of construction and combinations of parts, illusr trated in the accompanying drawings and set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a partly-sectional view of a ring and handle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a view of the two said parts detached from each other. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view on the dotted line x to, Fig. 1, upon a larger scale; and Fig. 4 represents a view of a ring-piece composed of two sections and a slide for connecting them.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A designates the handle, which may be composed of a single piece, or of two or more 0 pieces connected by a ferrule or ferrules.
B designates the ring-piece, which may consist of a. single strip or band, elastic or flexible, and continuous from end to end, as shown in Fig. 2, or of two sections adapted to be connected by aslide, B, like that shown in'Fig. 4. In either case the two ends of the ringpiece areentirelyunconnected with each other.
The upper end of the handle A is provided with a ferrule, A in which is fixed a nut, a; and Cdesignatesa rod or stem which is screwed into said nut, and has a head consisting oftwo widely-diverging arms, 0.
D designates a crotch, the upper surface of which is recessed, or which is formed with flanges b to receive the arms 0 betweenthem, as shown in Fig. 3. The two sides or members of the crotch D diverge at the same angle as the arm 0, and said crotch is provided with a tubular shank or stock, 0, which loosely surrounds the stem 0 and tits inside the ferrule l A In the upper surfaces of the crotch D are formed notches or recesses d, and the ends e of the ring-piece B are bent or hooked slightly,
so as to enter said notches or recesses. By holding the crotch D in one hand and turning on the handle A the stem 0 will be extended or drawn in by the action of the nut a, and when extended the ends of the piece B may be inserted between the parts 0 and D and into the notches or recesses (Z. The handleis then turned to draw in the stem 0, and as the inward movement of the crotch I) is arrested by the ferrule A the end portions of the ringpiece will be securely clamped in place and held against withdrawal, and also against lateral shifting, by reason of their fitting between the flanges b of the crotch D.
The ring-piece B, when detached, will straighten by reason of its elasticity, and may be placed inside the hollow handle A, or otherwise packed into small compass, whether made of a single piece, as shown in Fig. 2,01 of two sections, as shown in Fig. 4.
It will be observed that the construction and arrangement of the crotch D and arms C are such that when the ends of the ring-piece B are inserted and secured between them a ring of oval form will be produced, which is preferable to a round ringfor a landing-net.
WhatI claim as my invention, and desire to So secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a handle, A. provided with a nut, 01, and a ring-piece, B, of the crotch D, the stem 0, and diverging arms 0, all substantially as described. 8
2. The combination, with the handle A and ring-piece B, of the nut a, the screwed stem 0, the diverging arms 0, and the crotch I), provided with flanges b, which receive between them the ends ofsaid ring-piece B and said arms 0, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the handle A and ring-piece B, provided with bent ends 6, 0f the nut a, screwed stem 0, arms G,and crotch D, provided with recesses or notches d, all sub- 5 stantially as described.
