Claims. (Cl. 139-270) This invention relates to a loom feeler mechanism and has for its primary object to actuate the transmission rod of a conventional loom having a filling replenishing mechanism to initiate the operation of said mechanism when the filling on a quill has become depleted.
Another object is to avoid premature initiation of the operation of the filling replenishing mechanism until the yarn on the quill has been completely exhausted.
A further" object is toprevent premature operation of the filling replenishing mechanism due to the bouncing and chattering of the feeler.
The above and other objects may be attained by employing this invention which embodies among its features a transmission rod mounted to move longitudinally and initiate the operation of filling replenishing mechanism, a feeler mounted to move transversely relative to said rod adjacent one side thereof, and means carried by the feeler and movable therewith transversely across one end of said rod for engaging said rod and moving it longitudinally to initiate the operation of the filling mechanism.
Other features include guide means mounted adjacent the feeler for engaging the rod and holding the end thereof adjacent the feeler at a selected distance from the quill, and means carried by the rod and projecting laterally therefrom for engaging the means carried by the feeler and holding it out of engagement with the end of the rod during premature rocking movement of the feeler.

Referring to the drawings in detail, a loom Stand designated generally 10 comp-rises a base or bed 12 having a recess 14 opening through one side thereof and carrying adjacent longitudinal side edges guideways 16 and 18, respectively, along which ride a conventional feeler 20 which extends outwardly through a passage 22 in the body or base 12 toward a conventional quill Q. The feeler 20 is urged outwardly toward the quill Q under the influence of a spring 24 and when it contacts the quill Q moves laterally to actuate the transmission rod 26 which upon movement longitudinally initiates the oper- 2,736,342 tent'ed Feb. 28, 1956 ice ation of filling replenishing mechanism. The structure so far described is conventional and forms no part of this invention except in combination therewith.
A cover plate y28 is detachably connected to the base or body 12 by attaching screws 30 and 32 which extend into the base 12 adjacent opposite longitudinal side edges thereof, and as shown-'in Figures 4 and 8, the cover is hollow to define a recess 34 for the accommodation of one side of the spring 24, as will be readily understood upon reference to Figure 3. Carried by the cover 28 and extending outwardly from the side edge thereof which receives the screw 32 is a flange 36, and opening through the adjacent side 4of said cover plate 28 is an access opening 38 through which `the transmission rod 26 enters the stand 10.. 'A partition 40 separates the access opening 38 from the passage 22 through which the feeler 20 moves so as to avoid any contact of the feeler 20 with the transmission rod 26. l
Carried by the feeler 20 for movement in a path which intersects the path of movement of the rod 26 through i the access opening 38 is a projection or finger 42 which lateral movement of the feeder 20 through contact with the quill Q will .move the transmission rod 26 longitudinally to initiate the operation of the filling replenishing mechanism. l
Carried by the'transmission rod and extending outwardly and rearwardly from the end thereof which is engaged by the projection* or finger 42 is a guard 44 which serves to prevent coiltact'of` the finger or projection 42 with the end of the rod 26'upon premature sidewise movement of the feeler 20. Obviously, when the end of the projection or finger 42 has not advanced with the feeler 20 to extend across the rod 26, lateral movement of the feeler 20 will cause the end of the rod 26 to engage the cam surface 46 on the guard 44 and prevent 1ongitudinal movement of the rod. In this way, premature movement of the feeler in a direction which would normally actuate the rod 26 will not move the rod to initiate the operation of the filling replenishing mechanism.
Since the distance between the end of the rod within the stand 10 and the quill is critical, a suitable guide 48 having a guide recess or slot 50 extending therethrough is carried for adjustment along the flange 36 adjacent the access opening 38 with the recess 50 defining a guideway through which the rod may move longitudinally. Obviously, by releasing the screw 32 which projects through an elongated slot 52 in the guide 48, the guide may be shifted longitudinally along the flange 36 to support the rod 26 at a selected distance from the quill Q.
In use, it will be evident that with the stand 10 mounted on a loom of the type provided with an automatic filling replenishing mechanism to which the rod 26 is coupled, the feeler 20 will move in a conventional manner and being depressed into the stand 10 upon encountering a filled quill. As the filling on the quill becomes depleted, the feeler 20 will move outwardly therefrom, as suggested in Figures 5 and 6, so that when the feeler finally encounters the quill, it will move laterally as illustrated in Figure 6. As the feeler 20 moves outwardly, the finger or projection 42 will move in unison therewith and unless premature lateral movement of the feeler is experienced, the projection or finger 42 will move in a path which intersects the end of the rod 26 so that upon lateral movement of the feeler 20, as illustrated in Figure 6, the rod 26 will be moved longitudinally to initiate the operation of the iilling replenishing mechanism. Should the feeler 20 move laterally prematurely, i. e., before complete depletion of ythe filling from the quill, the projection or finger 42 moving laterally with the feeler 20 will engagethe cam surface 46' resorted to without departing from thepspirit and scopel of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
l. In a loom feeler mechanism, a transmission rod mounted on a loom to move longitudinally and initiate the operation of lilling replenishing mechanism carried by saidl loom, a feeler mounted on said loom to move transversely relative to saidv rod intermediate the ends thereof, and means carried by the'feeler and movable therewith transversely across one end of said rod for engaging. said rod and moving it longitudinally.-
2. In a loom feeler mechanism, a transmission rod mounted on a loom to move longitudinally and initiate the operation of filling replenishing mechanism carried by said loom, a feeler mounted on said Aloom to move transversely relative to said rod adjacent one side thereof, and a projection carried by the feeler and extending laterally outwardly from one side thereof for movement therewith in a path which extends transversely across one end of said rod to engage said rod and move it longitudinally.
3. In a loom feeler mechanism, a transmission rod mounted on a loom to move longitudinally and initiate the operation of filling replenishing mechanism carried by said loom,` a feeler mounted on said loom to move transversely relative to said rod intermediatetneends thereof in response to depletion of filling from a quill, means carried by the feeler and movable therewith transversely across 4 one end of the transmission rod for engaging said rod and moving it longitudinally, and means mounted adjacent the feeler for engaging the rod and holding the end thereof adjacent the feeler at a selected distance from the quill.
4. In a loom feeler mechanism, a transmission rod mounted on a loom to move longitudinally and initiate the operation of filling replenishing mechanism carried by said loom, a feeler mounted on said loom to move trans versely relative to said rod intermediate the ends thereof and to rock in an arcuate path parallel to said rod, and means carried by the feeler and movable therewith transversely across one end of the rod for engaging said rod upon rocking movement of the feeler and moving said rod longitudinally.
5. ln a loom feeler mechanism, a transmission rod mounted on a loom to move longitudinally and initiate the operation of filling replenishing mechanism carried by said loom, a feeler mounted on said loom to move transversely relative to said rod adjacent one side thereof and to rock in an arcuate path parallel to said rod, means carried by the feeler and movable therewith transversely across one end of the rod for engaging said rod upon rocking movement of the feeler and moving said rod longitudinally, and means carried by the rod and projecting laterally therefrom for engaging the means carried by the feeler and holding it out of engagement with the end of the rod during premature rocking movement of the feeler.
