PBSSARY.
No. $2.73,(3`03i Patented Mam. 6,1883.
WITNESSES LV VENTOR/ By UTI'LGUS Maw Mw v NITE STATES PATENT Feten,
PESSARY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,603, dated March 6, 1883. Application tiled September 12, 1881. (No model.)
TJ all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CONRAD RAHN, ot Shannon, in the county ot Carroll and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in WombSupporters; and I do hereby declare that the following' is atull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, rel'erence being` had to the accompanyingdrawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my irnproved womb-supporter, and Fig. 2 is a crosssection ofthe saine.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
My invention contemplates an improved construction of womb-supporters or pessaries for supporting the wotn b in prolapsus uteri, (t'alling ofthe womb,) as hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
My improved pessary A is of annular shape, either oval or circular, and is composed ot' an elastic central ring or body, a, made of steel wire, around which is wound oneor more strips of fine linen or muslin, b, the strips .having been h'rst soaked thoroughlyin a composition composed ot' one pound of yellow beeswax melted and mixed with one ounce ot' bayberry (Myrica ccrifcm) wax, and a suitable quantity ot'olive-oil. It' desired, suitable medical compounds xnay be incorporated in this mixture.
After a sufficiency ol" the steeped muslin strips have been wound around the central bodyc to make the ring ofthe desired thickness the ends are fastened by sewing with a needle and thread, and the whole ring is coated hy immez-sing it several times into the wax compound, eare being taken to let the layers dry lstruct a pessary with a central core or Patent of the or partially dry between each successive immersion. I prefer to add to the compound or mixture for thisouter coating a small quantity ofthe luid extracts of opium and belladonna; and,1fdesired,cocoa butter(oleum theobromae) may besubstituted for the wax and olive-oil in this mixture.
Besides affording a mechanical support to the uterus, the gradual exudation and absorption by the mucuous membranes of the compounds operate to allayirritation, and prevent the depression or falling feeling consequent upon this disease, and by incorporating suitable astringents into the wax compound as a vehicle the alected parts will be constantly under their action, which is not the case where these medicines are used simplyin the form of injections.
l am well aware that it is not new to conbody of steel or other suitable material; nor do I claim, broadly', a medicated pessary, or a pessary of fibrous material adapted to be impregnated with medicaments for topical application; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters United States, is-
As an article ot' manufacture, a pessary composed of a central steel body or core, a, a scries ofsuperimposed layers, b, of muslin treated with a compound of beeswax, bayberry-wax, and oliveoil, and a coating, c, of a compound of beeswax, bayberry-wax, and sweet-oil.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence two witnesses.
l CONRAD BAHN.
