W. H. PETTINER 82; J. L. GOLCORD.
DUST GUARD FOR RAILWAY CARS. No. 273,595. Patented Ma.1*.6,1883.
UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. PETTINER AND JOSEPH L. COLUORD, 0F AUGUSTA, MAINE.
DUST-GUARD FOR RAILWAY-CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,595, dated March 6, 1883.
Application filed May 15. 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WM. H. PETTINER, and JOS. L. OOLGORD, of Augusta, in the county of Kennebec and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dust-Guards for Railway-cars, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawing, which is a sectional view of our invention.
Like letters indicate like parts.
The object of our invention is to give the current of air passing the car-window such a direction at the forward side of the window as will blow the dust, cinders, &c., away from the window and prevent any entering the car. It is automatic in its action, being operated by the current of air as the car moves in one direction or the other, and the whole may be covered by the finish of the car, or fastened upon the outside, sons to be removed when not in use.
In the drawing, cl represents the side of a. car, and a, the windows, with our invention between them. The arrow it indicates the direction the car is traveling, and the arrows xv the current of air.
0 is a concave base.
I) is the centrally-pivoted deflector, convex upon the inner surface. The current of air operating upon the centrally-pivoted deflector opens it toward the front and closes the back until arrested by the stops 6 e. The centrallypivoted deflector I), being pivoted at the center 1, is easily operated by the current of air, and,itwil1beseen,requiresnoad justmeut. The air pas ing between this centrally-pivoted deflector and the base a is deflected by the concave base and given a strong outward direction at the edge of the window. This prevents the dust and cinders entering the window and tends to produce a current of air from the inside of the car.
We claim as our invention- 1. The eentrallypivoted curved deflector b, in combination with the correspondinglycurved base 0. as described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. The centrally-pivoted curved deflector b, in combination with the correspondinglycurved base 0, having the stops e e thereon, as and for the purposes set forth.
WM. H. PETTINER. JOS. L. ()OLUORI). Witnesses:
WINFIELD S. CHOATE, HARLOW M. HALL.
