1 Claim. (Cl. 222-324) This invention relates to a pump attachment for a fluid can and the like.
ltV is an object of this invention to provide a fluid pump attachment for a conventional type of fluid can whereby the maximum amount of fluidl may be mechanically pumped from the can regardless of the angle of the can at the time the fluid is being pumped therefrom.
Heretofore when pumping oil from an oil can the person dispensing the oil has to be careful that the oil was in a position where it would naturally flow to the flat bottom from which it could be most easily dispensed.
A further object of this invention is to provide a liquid pump attachment for a can of the kind to be more particularly described hereinafter which is economical for manufacture and easy for use when attached to a can.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention wil be hereinafter described and the novel features thereof defined in the appended claim.

Since oil is conventionally distributed in cans which may be purchased by a person desiring to use the oil either for his automobile or for any other purpose, the cans provide a handy oil container for holding the oil until it is to be dispensed at the will of the persons using the oil container. While oil and oil containers are such widely used devices the pump attachment of this invention is particularly adapted for use on such cans.
The pump attachment of this invention is particularly adapted for use on oil cans or any other can containing fluid which is sought to be dispensed from the can.
The pump attachment 10, constructed according to an embodiment of my invention, is adapted to be used on oil cans or other liquid containing can using a pump for dispensing the fluid from the can. In the present drawing the numeral 11 designates generally a can for containing liquid to be dispensed. The can 11 may be closed at the upper end thereof but will be opened at the time the liquid contents are to be dispensed from the can. I have provided a cap 12 for engagement on the upper open end of the can having a horizontal cover wall 14 engageable over the now opened upper open end of the can. The cap 12 is provided with a depending flange 15 about the circumference thereof which is engageable with the side walls of the can when the pump attachment is secured thereon.
In order to make the pump attachment very portable a horizontal U-shaped hand grip 16 is secured to the cap provided a. groove 19 on the lower surface of the horizontal cover wall 14 in which a cork seal 2li is engaged. This cork seal will seal the pump attachment on the can 11 at the time when the liquid of the can is to be dispensed.
A manually actuated ringer pump 21 is supported on the pump attachment 10 having portions thereof extending into the tank for engaging the fluid to be dispensed and a portion extending from the tank for carrying the fluidas it is dispensed.
The outer surface of the cover wall 14 is provided with an exteriorly threaded boss 22 on which a spout 24 is engaged at the time of dispensing the liquid from the can 11. An interiorly threaded cylinder 25 is positioned at one end of the spout 24 for connecting the spout to the pump attachment 10 as clearly notable in Figs. 1 and 2 of thedrawings. The boss 22 is provided with a bore 26 longitudinally of the attachment l0 and for communication with a hollow liquid outlet tube 27 which is engaged therein.
A check valve 28 is disposed on the under side of the cover wall 14 having a ball 29 therein which will limit the flow of liquid in the discharge tube 27 and to the spout 24 when the liquid is pumped in that direction. Resilient means such as the coil spring 3i) is disposed between the shoulder 31 and the upper end of the outlet tube 27 for limiting the flow of liquid in a direction opposed to the tension of the resilient means or coil spring 30.
In order to provide the pump on the lower surface of the cover wall 14 of the pump attachment 1li there is provided an inner cup- 32 fixed relative to the cover wall 19 having an outer cup 34 slidable on the inner cup 32 in a telescoped relation so that upon movement of the outer cup any fluid between the cups is pumped outwardly of the cups and outwardly of the can 11. A coil spring 35 between the inner and outer cups of the pump constantly urge the slidable cup outwardly relative to the inner cup so that the outer cup must be moved by the fingers of a person grasping the hand grip 16.
A rigid fluid inlet tube 36 is positioned longitudinally of the can 11 at the upper open end thereof extending vertically upwardly from the inner fixed cup 32 so that by the fixing of the cup 32 in the pump attachment 1li the inlet tube 36 is also fixed relative to the pump attachment 10.
This inlet tube 36 provides for the flow of liquid into the pump between the inner and outer cups and there is a U-shaped `connecting tube 37 connected to the rigid inlet tube 36 below the pump and below the cups as can be clearly discerned from the view of Figs. l and 2 of the drawings.
A flexible liquid inlet tube 38 is positioned interiorly of the tank 11 with one end of the flexible tube 38 engaged about and secured to one end of the U-shaped connecting tube 37 by a rubberband or other suitable fastening means.
At the connection of this one end of the llexible tube 38 to one end of the connecting tube 37 there is provided a check valve 39 for limiting the flow of liquid from the tank to the dispensing spout and preventing the llow of liquid in the opposite direction. This check valve 39 is provided with a ball` 40 therein engaging one end of a 2,735,sss
coil spring 41 or resilient means for closing the check valve at the time the pump described above is actuated. In other words the liquid to be dispensed is taken up through the tlexible inlet tube 3S to the pump upon the actuation of the pump and the liquid is thereby prevented from flowing back into the tank.
The flexible tube 33 is provided so that the open end thereof remote from the rigid inlet tubes connected to the pump may be moved to many positions on the bottom of the tank so that all of the liquid to be dispensed may be reached by the inlet tube of the pump irrespective of any position which the can 1l and pump attachment may be positioned in.
For actuating the movable cup 34 and thereby the pump a linger engaging arm 44 is connected to the slidable cup by Way of a longitudinally extending post 4S substantially perpendicular to the arm 44. A pad or foot 46 is secured to the outside surface of the outer cup 34 so that upon actuation of the outwardly extending portion of the arm 44 the outer cup may be moved in the direction of the inner cup for pumping any liquid from the can Trl.
This type of pump attachment will provide for the connection of such attachment to any can having liquid to be dispensed therefrom and the dispensing of the liquid may be accomplished by one hand of the operator engaged in the hand grip 16 with the thumb or one linger of the hand engageable with the outer end of the arm 44 so that the pump may be actuated at any time regardless of the position of the can 11 and pump attachment 10 thereon.
While the specific details of one embodiment of this invention have been herein shown and described, the invention is not confined thereto as changes and alterations may be made without departig from the spirit and scope thereof as defined in the appended claim.
I claim:
A pump attachment for an open ended can comprising a cap engageable over the open end of the can, a looped handle carried by said cap, an upstanding nipple carried by said cap, a tube depending from said cap and communicating with said nipple, a pump formed of a pair of telescoping cups, one of said cups being fixed to said tube and the other of said cups being slidable on said tube, a spring constantly urging said slidable tube upwardly, a pump operating lever rockably carried by said cap, a
