Description

S. R; DYER.
GAR AXLE BOX.
(No Model.)
Patented Mar. 6,1883..
25 axle-box proper.
NITED STATES PATE T OFFIC STEPHEN R. DYER, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
CAR-AXLE BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,484, dated March 6, 1883.
Application filed August 7, 1882. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN R. DYER, a resident of the city of New Orleans, parish of Orleans, and State of Louisiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in'Gar-- Axle Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a car-axle box having at one end thereof a communicating receptacle for holding water or other cooling-liquid ir lg l rigating pgaterial, and at the other end of same averticalliadjustable recessed washer with my improvements thereto attached. Fig.
2 is a vertical cross-section of same through the line 00 w of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 shows the inner side of the adjustable washer.
On the drawings, the letter A designates the B is the brass or journalbearing thereof, and O the journal of a caraxle. At that end of the box to which the cover is usually affixed I apply a- Water-tight gasket, 01, over which I bolt or, otherwise se- 0 cure areceptacle, E, having a cover at the top' thereof, as shown atf, the raising of which permits of the introduction of the lubricant.
To exclude dust as well as to prevent the esa cape and consequent loss of the lubricant, a
5 washer, 9, having an annular recess, h, for the reception of gum or other packing i, is secured over the opposite end of the box by means of bolts or studs k, the tightening of which causes the packing to fit more closely around the axle, thereby securing the desired result. In order that the washer may have an even bearing around the axle, the hole I in the center thereof is made somewhat larger in diameter than the saidaxle, and the bolt-holes mare vertically elongated, as shown in Fig. 3, which permits of the said washer being raised or lowered according to the thickness of the brass or journal-bearing B. In thebottom of the box is fitted a screw, it, the unscrewing of which permits of the withdrawalof the lubricant and dirt contained therein.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The combination, with the car-axle box A, bolts 70, and packing i, of a washer, 9, having annular recess h and vertical elongated holes at, as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the car-axle box A, bearing B, and axle having journal 0, the receptacle E, washer g, and packing 1", all constructed and arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto sign my name.
\ STEPHEN R. DYER.
In presence of- P. J. FINNEY, J. O. HUBBELL.
