AxLE-BEARING.
' SPECIFICATION forming part f Letters Patent No. 631,400, dated August 22, 1899.
limitation tiled september 21,1189?. serrant. 652,500. (romana Be it known that I, JOSEF KORBULY, a subject of the Emperor' of Austria-Hungary, residing at Arad, Austriallungary, have invented certainllinprovements in the Bearings Ido hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention is an improvement on the No. 558,'693,dated `April 21, 1896, and has for its object increased facility in the lubrication of the journal and bearings, as well as greater simplicity and compactness.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a longitudinal verticalV section of a journal-box and inclosed parts embodying my invention, the journal being shown in side elevation. Fig. 2 represents a central transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 represents a transverse section of the same, taken on a plane at the inner edge of the washers and looking outward. Fig. 4 represents a detail sectional View of lthe under part of the washer and devices for holding it in place. Fig. 5 represents a view, similar to Fig. 1, of a slightly-modified form of my device. Fig. 6 represents a view of thesame similar to Fig. 3. Fig. 7 represents a detail View, similar to Fig. 4, of the modified' form of washer and clamping devices illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6. Fig. 8 represents a view, similar to Figs. 1 and 5, of another modication. Fig. 9 represents a detailview, partly in elevation and partly in section, of the washer, tightenin g-nut, and proximate devices. Fig. 10 represents a detail view of the said tightening' nut, its screw, and the frame or casein which it works, the parts having the construction shown in Fig. 1.' Fig. 11 represents a view, similar to Figs. 1, 5, and 8, of another modiiication. Fig. 12 represents a transverse central section of Fig. 11. Fig. 13 represents a side elevation of another modification with interior parts indicated by dotted lines; and
oil-reservoir.
Fig. 14u representsa vertical section through Fig. 13, taken at the rear end of the brasses. In practical use of my devicesshown in vPatent No. 558,693 I have found that the jou mal-bearings wear very little, so that there is no great needv to make them rotatable. Also I have found that the rapid rotation `of the axle-journal in the bearing-brasses forms a partial vacuum in the narrow interval between them, so that the oil is sucked up from below to the journal if any passage be left for it. To utilize this latter fact and in view of what is above stated vwith regard to the bearings, as Well as for the purpose of permitting the boxes of car-axle journals to be manufactured more cheaply and simply than heretofore, I have invented the following construction.
A designates the journal-box, inclosing the journal C of the car-axle and the bearingbrasses d d, the said box resting on the uplper brass CZ, to which the upper part of the" said box is fastened by screw t in the forms of my invention illustrated by Figs. 1, L and 5. The body A of this box is cylindrical and fits the said brasses closely. An oil-reservoir B below the said body and also extending up outside the end of the journal is provided with a thin outer shell D, which is integral with the said body and forms a part of the said box. This shell is curved transversely, as shown in Fig. 2, and also longitudinally, as shown in Figsl, 5, and S, giving it a peculiar shape corresponding to a longitudinal semicylindrical sectionv of a pipe running along the under side of the said box-body and bent up to cover its outer end, which would otherwise be open. 'The lower brass or bearing cl' is provided with a central funnel-like aperture Z3, which communicateswith the upper end of the central bore l of a tube Z, the latter being cast with the box-body A' and extending downward therefrom into the said The oil is fed tothe said reservoir through holes in the top of the said box, near the ends thereof, one of which (marked m2) is shown in Fig. 8.V 0ne of these is normally closed by a plug m and the other by a screw m. The suction due to slight irregularities in the running of the journal draws up the oil to the said journal through the pas- IOO . plate into the said box.
Figs. 13 and 1l.
11 and l2, or by outer encircling rings z .2',
ThislowerbearingD"is provided with the downwardly-extending tube t toni.
, and its bore l' of Fig. As shown in Fig. il, the journal-box used with this modification of my invention does not correspond to the journal or bearing, but is flat at the botlt has no auxiliary shell D, but is elosed 'i at the end and adapted to hold oil, so that the j operation is the same as hereinbefore deof the said box and a fastening-plate yr, by means of a bolt r, that passes through the said I also employa tightening-ring 0, surrounding the [lat horizontal part ot the said washer, as shown in section in Figs. l and 4, and tightened by a nutg/ and serewf, the latter working through a tixed part of a easing or frame e, whieh is integral with the said axle-box. These tightening dovioes are most distinctly shown in Figs. 10 and Il.
The washer thus held in plaee and tightened prevents the oil from passing out of the inner end of the journal-box and along the axle or on the ground below.
In journal-boxes itting close to the outer face of the wheel E, as shown in Fig. 5, I substitute for the said ring r a grooved eollar y, whieh is serewed to the innerend of the axlebox and allows the latter to be made shorter,
a leak-preventing washer s' (see also Fig.
being held in plaee by the said collar.
As shown in Fig. S, the box-body A soine scribed.
Having thus described my invention, what I olaim as new, and desi re to seeu re by Letters latent, is-
l. A journal-box provided with a reservoir for oil extending below the said box, a perforated bearing for the journal, and a tube eX- tending downward into the oil and affording a passage for the same up through the aperture of the hearing to the journal substantially as set forth.
L. An axle-box provided with a cylindrical body A and a shell forming an oil-reservoir below the latter, in combination with a brass d within the said body and a tube extending down from said body into the oil, the bore of the said tube and a registering aperture in the said brass affordinga continuous oil-passage to the journal, substantially as set forth.
3. In combination with 'an axle-journal and its box, an oil-retaining annular washer tting on the said journal and provided with a times also serves for a bearing, the ordinary brasses being dispensed with. In this ease the central bore of tube l extends to the journal and has a funnel-shaped top. On aeeount of this dii'lerenee in Construction I have marked the said bore Z in the said figure.
In journal-boxes having an upper brass D', Figs. 1l, l2, 13, and ll, but no lower brass, I attach to the upper brass a lower semieylindrieal bearing D, which is fastened to the said upper brass by lugs 7n and bolts 7s, Figs.
I' i t vertieal part, and a retaining-plate and bolts whereby the said Vertical part is clamped to the inner end of the said box, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 31st day of July, 1897.
JOSEF KOR EULY.
