UNITED STATES V PATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL J. DUNN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SHOE-MAKERS LAST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,482, dated March 6, 1883-.
Application filed November 27, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be "it known that I, MIGHAELJ. DUNN,a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, haveinvented cer-. tain Improvements in Shoe-Makers Lasts, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a shoe-makers last with a simple and efficient device for preventing the accidental slipping of the detachable upper portion of the last when the latter is in use; and this object I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side View of a last with my improvement; Fig. 2, a plan view of the same, and-Figs. 3 and 4 detached views of the stoppl'ates. v
A is the main portion of the last, and B the usual detachable upper block, the front end of which is adapted to undercut recesses in the portion A of the last, as shown by dotted lines To prevent this block B from slipping rearwardly from its place when the last is in use, I recess the top of the last A at and near the rear end of the block B, and-secure within this recess a plate, a, having arib, b, which extends laterally across the last and bears upon the rear edge of the block B, so as to effectually prevent the movement of the. same in the direction of the arrow 1, such as would be caused by pressure on the block when the last is in use. The block B can be readily (No model.)
clear of the rib b, the leather of the shoe being sufficiently elastic to permit this movement- To prevent the wearing away of the lower corner of the block, I recess the under side of said block at the rear end, and secure within the recess a ,plate, 01, the edge of which bears against the rib b of the plate a, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The plates at and d are inexpensive, and can be readily secured to the pertions A and B of the last, so that the cost of the latter is not materially increased.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the detachable block B of the last with the portion A, to which is secured a plate, a, having a projecting rib, b, which, when the block B is adjusted to its place, bears uponthe rear edge of said block and prevents the accidental displacement of the same, as set forth.
2. The combination of the portion A of the last having the plate a with rib b, and the block B, having the plate d, as set forth.
In testimony whereofI have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MIGHAEL J. DUNN.
Witnesses HARRY DRURY, HARRY SMITH.
