V SOLE TRIMMING AND CHANNELING MACHINE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,395, dated May 8, 1883,

To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN H. WIEGAND, of

' San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of Galifornia,hav e invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Trimming and Channeling Soles of Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which-.-

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device for holding and marking soles while trimming them. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same provided with the attachment for holdings taps and half-soles while trimming. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the latter attachment. Fig.4 is a similar view of the numbering-plate; and Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view of the machineupon which my deviceis preferably used.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

My invention relates'to devices for holding and marking shoe or boot soles while trimming them; and it contemplates more particularly certain improvements in the trimming and channeling machine for which Letters Patent were granted to Jason Smith on the 23d day of March, 1880, No. 225,729; and it consists in the improved construction and com- 'bination of parts of an attachment for the clamping-foot of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates an oblong metal foot, tapering on the sides toward one end, having screw or bolt holes B, for the purpose of attaching it to the clamping-foot I of the machine. In the wide portion of the foot, on the surface hearing against the sole, is a groove, 0, beveled at the sides, widening toward the bottom, and

adapted to receive a correspondingly-beveled slide, D, upon the face of which the figures indicating the number of the, sole are cut or cast, raised above the surface, so that when pressed against the sole they will stamp the number plainly upon it. In the face of this slide isanotch,E,near the outer end,so that it may be removed and another inserted, as many. slides belng required as there are numbers of shoes. To make the figures mark the numbers more plainly, the slides may be heated before inserting them. At the same time these slides and raised figures mark the number of the sole. They serve also to'hold the sole firmer whiletrimmingit thanaperfectlysmooth foot.

' In trimming taps and half-soles the attachment shown in Figs. 2 and 3 is used, while in trimming whole soles the foot is preferably placed upon the heel or rear part of the sole. In using this attachment, as naturally follows, it is placed over the tap or half-sole, the attachment consisting of a metallic plate, F, having a leather plate, .G, fastened upon its bearingsurface, and a projection, H, of the same shape as the slide D, upon itsupper surface, by which it may be inserted in and held in groove 0. By using this attachment taps and half-soles may be trimmed in a like manner as soles using the same patterns, the foot holding the leather blank firmly upon the pattern.

It will be seen that by employing this marking-slide alarge amount of time will be saved, the slide marking and holding the sole, and it being but a moments work to change the slide when a pattern is changed.

Having th as described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In a machine for trimming soles of the pose shown and set forth.

2. The combination of the foot A, having holes B, for the insertion of fastening screws or bolts, and groove 0, beveled Widening toward the bottom, with slide D,-having raised numbers upon itsface and beveled to fit into the groove 0, as shown and set forth. I

3. The combination of the foot A, having holes B, forjthe insertion of fastening screws or bolts, and groove 0, beveled'widening toward the bottom, with plate F, having leather l plate G upon its bearing-surface, and projec tion H, beveled to slide into and be held fast in slot 0, as shown and set forth.
