To all trhom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HUGO BORGHARDT, of Peekskill, in the State of New York, have invented a certain Improvement in Adjustable Devices for Holding Cartridges in Detachable ()artridge-Magazines, of which the following is a specification.

My improvement is especially applicable to the kind of box or magazine for holding cartridges in which the cartridges lie side by side, and from the mouth of which they are ejected by sidewise movement under the influence of an expanding spring contained in the bottom of the box.

My invention consists in holding the cartridges in the box by means of a finger or stop, which can be so moved as to partially embrace or bear upon the shank of the uppermost cartridge, and which is provided with a stud pro- 2o jecting from the box, to which stud force can be applied to move the finger in either direction, and which is so placed that in the act of attaching the cartridge-box to the gun the impact of the stud upon a part of the gun withdraws the finger or stop, and thereby releases the cartridges to the action of the ejectingspring, by which they are fed successively into the receiver of the gun.

The accompanying drawings of a cartridgebo'x illustrating my invention are as follows: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the box. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the line as zv on Fig. 1, showing the finger bearing upon the uppermost cartridge; and Fig. 3 is a similar section, showing the finger withdrawn from the path ofmovement of the cartridges.

The drawings represent a cartridge-box, A, of the trapezoidal form shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States No. 221,328, dated November 4, 1879, granted'to James Lee, for improvement in magazine firearms, and in Letters Patent of the United States No. 254,453, dated March 7, 1882, granted to me, for an improvement in magazines l'or fire-arms.

The box contains the usual movable springbottom, A, upon which the lowermost cartridge rests, and which is fastened to the upper leaf of the usual expanding zigzag spring, A

My finger or stop for holding in the cartridges is preferably arranged within the box,

and to that end one of the side walls, a, of the box has formed upon its interior surface the vertical recess or groove b, below which is a slot, 0, which is in line with the groove.

Deposited in the groove bis the finger d, which is a metallic strip having the inwardlycurved upper end, (1. At some distance from its lower end there is secured to the finger the rivet or stud d, the shank of which projects through the slot 0 in the side of the box, and has upon its outer end the head or collar 01 The finger (1 slides longitudinally, and the slot 0 is long enough to afford sufficient range of motion to the finger to enable it to occupy at the ends of its motions, respectively, the two positions shown in Figs. 2 and 3. In its highest position its curved end bears upon the shank of the uppermost cartridge, as shown in Fig. 2. This position of the finger is acquired because the upper end wall, I), of the groove 1) constitutes a shoulder extending across the path of motion of the finger, and by collision with this shoulder the curved upper end of the finger, asit moves up, is forced outof the groove and toward the opposite Wall of the box. When the finger is withdrawn from its highest position it springs into the groove b, 00-

cupying the position shown in Fig. 3.

The collar d upon the outer end of the stud, may be pushed either way by hand, if desired; but by reason of its-projection from the box it is adapted to be broughtinto collision with a part of the gun during the act of attaching the box to the gun. By such collision,during the time while the box is being pushed into its seat in the gun, the finger d is withdrawn into the groove 12, thereby releasing the cartridges contained in the box to the action of the ejecting-spring'A by means of which they are successively supplied in the usual manner for the reloading of the gun.

In addition to the shoulder b at the upper end of the groove 1), another shoulder, D is formed across the lower part of the groove for the purpose of bearing upon and opposing frictional resistance to the lower part, 01*, of the finger d during the downward motion of the finger, and also for the purpose of acting as a frictional stop against which the lower end of the finger d bears when the finger is fully elevated, so that the finger cannot be slid down unless a prescribed amount of force The movable finger 01, provided with the stud I0 is applied to it to overcome the frictional resistance of the shoulder W. A further effect of the shoulder b is to slightly tilt fihe lower portion of the finger outward from the groove, and thereby to give to the upper portion of the finger a tendency to spring into the groove out of the Way of the cartridges.

I claim as my inventiond projecting through the slot 0 in the side of the box, in combination with the shoulder W, as and for the purpose'set forth.
