To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. BARNES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ilion, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Extractor and Ejector Mechanism for Firearms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to firearms and has for its object a particularly simple and efficient extractor and ejector mechanism; and it consists in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the receiver and frame, partly broken away, of the firearm and contiguous parts. Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 5 are horizontal longitudinal sectional views, taken on line AA, Fig. 1, illustrating the operation of the extracting and ejecting means, parts being shown in elevation and parts being omitted. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary cross-sectional view through the receiver and breech bolt showing the means of attaching the cover plate to the breech bolt.
1 is the receiver and 2 the frame which, so far as this invention is concerned, may be of any desirable form, size and construction and united in any suitable manner, the receiver being formed with a shell exit slot 3.
4 is the breech bolt slidable along suitable ways provided 'within the receiver and frame, the breech bolt being automatic in its action, that is,being moved rearwardly by the rebound of the cartridge in the firing chamber against the action of a returning s ring 5 encircling the firing pin 6 carr1ed by the breech bolt, the spring being interposed between a lug or shoulder 7 within the frame and receiver, and a shoulder 8 on the firing pin.
9 is the cover plate for the shell exit slot 3, the cover plate being secured to the breech bolt by a s row 10 threading through the cover plate and having detachable interlocking engagement with the breech bolt. An additional spring 12 encircles the firing pin and acts in opposition to the main spring against the opposite side of the shoulder 8, thespring 12 acting to hold the advance end 13 of the firing pin from projecting in front of the breech bolt. The rear end of the firlng pin is arranged to be struck by the hammer, not shown.
In so far as this invention is concerned, the frame and receiver, firing mechanism and breech bolt and cover plate in themselves are of no importance and form the subject matter of my application No. 722,608, filed Sept. 27, 1912, of Which this application is divisional, and of my application, Sr. No. 812,972, filed Jan. 19, 1914.
14 is the extractor and 15 the ejector locatcd on opposite sides of the breech bolt 4, the extractor 14 being carried by and movable with the breech bolt 4 on the side thereof contiguous to the cover 9 of the receiver, and the ejector 15 being carried by the receiver. The extractor 14 is here shown as carried in a recess 16 opening throu h the side and the front end faces of the reech bolt 4, andsaid extractor is held in position by the cover plate for the exit slot 3 and is mounted to be moved laterally toward the cover plate 9 by the ejector 15 through the medium of the interposed cartridge shell 17.
As here shown, the extractor 14 is elongated and is formed with a tail 18 and is normally held toward its normal position, that is, its position shown in Fig. 2, by a returning spring 19 located in a socket at the rear end of the recess 16, the spring acting against the enlargement 20 near the rear end of the extractor. The extractor 14 projects at its forward end beyond the front end of the breech bolt 4 into a recess 21 in the rear end of the barrel A and is formed with a'shoulder 22 for engaging the front side of the rim of the cartridge shell 17 The movement of the extractor by its spring 19 is limited by a stop shoulder 23 which also causes the extractor to have a pivotal movement laterally. The spring 19 permits the extractor 14 to ratchet into engagement with the rim of the cartridge shell in the firing chamber, as seen in Fig. 2.
The ejector 15 is pivoted between its ends at 24 to the receiver, and as the breech bolt moves rearwardly the rear end of the ejector coacts with the cam face 25 on the side of the breech bolt and the forward end of the engage the rear face of the rim of the cartridge shell at a point diametrically opposite that portion of the rim engaged y the head, or the shoulder 22 of the extractor, and is formed in advance of the shoulder 26 with a concave cutout 27 and with a shoulder for engaging the edge of the rim of the cartridge shell, said shoulder being arranged between the shoulder 26 and the cutout 27 and substantially perpendicular to the shoulder 26. The head 22 of the extractor is also formed with a convex face 28 for engaging the side of the cartridge shell and acting in conjunction with the concave cutout 27 to give a twirling motion to the shell being ejected, and to effect the ratcheting of the head 22 into engagement with the rim of the cartridge. The impulse for this twirling motion is effected by a spring means acting to resist the lateral movement of the extractor 14 by the ejector 15 through the medium of the interposed shell, after the extractor has been moved laterally a predetermined distance. 'As here shown, said means comprises a spring pressed plun er 29 carried in a recess in the inner side 0 the cover plate 9 and arranged to engage the advance end of the extractor 14. The recess for the extractor 14 is of less width than the recess for the plunger 29, and hence, when the breech bolt 4 and 'cover plate 9 are assembled, the spring pressed plunger is held from projecting beyond the inner face of the cover plate 9 by the portion of'the breech bolt on opposite sides of the recess 16.
In order that the ejector 15 may be removed upon the removal of the breech bolt and may also be readily placed in position, the ejector is formed with an open endeo slot 30 for receiving the pivot pin 24 fixed within the receiver.
In operation, as the breech bolt 4 moves rearwardly, the extractor 14 withdraws the shell from the firing chamber from the position shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig. 3. The cam 25 of the breech bolt then engages the reararm of the ejector causing the ejector 15 to move about its pivot 24 into the position shown in Fig. :3 moving the shoulder 26 thereof in the rear of the rim '0f the cartridge shell 17. During continued movement of the breech bolt,the cam 25 furthertilts the ejector 15 on its pivot into the position show'x'iin Fig. 4, and the shoulder 26 forcesone side of the cartridge shell outwardly while the other side thereof is being held by th'e'head 22 of the extractor 14 and the shell sup orted away from theend'e the breech-U0 t'and between the ejector and extractor. llluring this movement of the ejector-'15, the extractor 14 is moved laterally first against the slight resisting action of the spring. E9 and subsequently comes into engagement with 'the spring pressed plunger 29. depressing said plunger. This tiltmg movement at the'shell moves the p rtion of the rim thereof engaged with the shoulder'26 to the concave cutout 27, and when it reaches such cutout, the spring pressed plunger 29, which has'been put under tension, reacts and flips the shell with a whirling movement through the slot 3 leaving the parts as shown in Fig. 5. Durin the forward movement of the breech b0 t 4 under the actioi'i of its spring 5, the ejector 15 is returned to its position by a cam 25 on the breech bolt 4 and the head 22 of the extractor snaps into engagement with the rim of the fresh cartridge which has been fed in front of the breech bolt in any suitable manner, as will be understood by thoseskilled in the art.
As seen in Figs. 1, 2 and 6, the detachable interlocking engagement of the screw 10 and the breech bolt 4 is effected by forming the breech bolt with a recess or slot 31 in the side thereof contiguous to the cover plate, the recess having an enlarged entrance at its upper end as shown in dotted lines, Fig. l, and a contracted portion 32 at its lower end, this contracted portion having undercut side walls, Figs. 2 to 5 inclusive; and by forming the screw 10 with a circumferential groove which provides a shank 33, and an enlarged head 36;. The screw threads into thecover plate only and has a knurled head at its outer end.
In assembling the breech bolt 4: and cover plate 9., the screw 10 is turned into the threaded hole of the cover plate and the head 34 at the inner end thereof passed through the entrance at the upper end of the slot 31. The screw 10 and cover plate 9 are then moved to carry said head 34 behind the undercut sides of the contracted portion 32 of the slot 31. The screw 10 is then unscrewed slightly to t'ghten the head in the contracted portion oi the slot and to draw the breech bolt and cover plate together.

In a firearm, a receiver formed with a shell exit slot, and mechanism in the receiver including a movable breech bolt, an extractor and an ejector arranged on opposite sides of the breech bolt, the extractor being carried by and movable with the" breech bolt, and also movable outwardly laterally relatively to the breech bolt, during the portion of the backward movement of the breech bolt which effects the lateral discharge movement of the shell, and the ejector being carried by the receiver and having means for coacting with the breech bolt whereby the advance end of the ejector moves toward said slot and the extractor and forces the extractor outwardly laterally through the medium of the interposed cartridge shell, the extractor being formed with means for engaging the front side of the rim of the shell and additional means for engaging the side of the shell, and the ejector being formed with means for engaging the rear side of said rim at a point opposite to the portion thereof engaged by the extractor and with means for engaging the edge of said rim and permitting said rim to move lengthwise of the ejector, and a plurality of spring means acting to resist said outward lateral movement of the extractor and to move the extractor laterally in the opposite direction during the discharge of the shell. one of said spring means being movable independently of the other during the initial outward lateral movement of the extractor, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a firearm, a receiver formed with a shell exit slot, and mechanism in the receiver including a movable breech bolt, an extractor and an ejector on opposite sides of the breech bolt. the extractor being carried by and movable with. the breech bolt and also movable laterally relatively to the breech bolt. and the ejector being carried by the receiver and having means for coacting with the breech bolt whereby the advance end of the ejector moves toward said slot and the extractor, and forces the extractor outwardly laterally through the medium of the interposed cartridge shell, and a spring movable with the breech bolt and acting to resist lateral movement of the extractor, the spring being disconnected from the extractor and arranged to come into action after the extractor has been moved laterally a predetermined distance, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. In a firearm, a receiver formed with a shell exit slot, and mechanism in the receiver including a movable breech bolt, an extractor and an ejector arranged on opposite sides of the breech bolt, the extractor being carried by and movable with the breech bolt and also movable laterally rela tively to the breech bolt, and the ejector being carried by the receiver and having means for coacting with the breech bolt whereby the advance end of the ejector moves toward said slot and the extractor, and forces the extractor outwardly laterally through the medium of the interposed cartridge shell, a spring carried by the breech bolt and normally acting on the extractor to resist lateral movement of the same, and additional spring means movable with the breech bolt and arranged to come into action after the extractor has been moved a predetermined distance, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a firearm, a receiver formed with a shell exit slot, and mechanism in the receiver including a movable breech bolt, an extractor and an ejector arranged on opposite sides of the breech bolt, the extractor being arranged on the side of the breech bolt nearest said slot, and being carried by, and movable with, the breech bolt, and being also movable laterally relatively to the breech bolt, and the ejector being carried by the receiver and having means coacting with the breech bolt whereby the advance end of the ejector moves toward the extractor and said slot, and forces the extractor laterally toward said slot through the medium of the interposed cartridge shell, a closure for the slot, movable with the breech bolt, and a spring-pressed plunger carried by the closure in position to engage the extractor and resist lateral movement thereof, substantially as and for the purpose described.
6. In a firearm, a receiver formed with a shell exit slot and mechanism in the receiver including a movable breech-bolt against the front end of which the closed end of the shell rests, an ejector and an extractor arranged on the opposite sides of the breech-bolt, the extractor being carried by, and movable with, the breech-bolt, and also movable laterally relatively to the breech-bolt, and the ejector being carried by the receiver and held from endwise movement with the breech bolt and arranged with its advance end normally out of engagement with the cartridge shell and in the path of the cartridge shell after the cartridge shell has been drawn by the extractor out of the firing chamber, said ejector having means for coacting with the breech-bolt, whereby the advance end of the ejector is positively moved toward said slot and the extractor and forces the extractor outwardly laterally through the medium of the interposed cartridge shell and the closed end of the shell away from the end of the breech-bolt, whereby the shell is carried by the ejector and extractor and is moved bodily toward said slot, the extractor being formed with a shoulder for engaging the front side of the rim of the shell iii) at a point on one side thereof, and the ejector being formed with a shoulder for engaging the rear side of the rim, and means for moving the extractor toward the ejector with a quick movement at the moment of release of the shell for imparting a whirling movement to the latter, substantially as and for the purpose described.
7. In a firearm, a receiver formed with a shell exit slot, a movable breech-bolt, an extractor and an ejector arranged on opposite sides of the breech-bolt, the extractor being carried by, and movable with, the breechbolt, and also movable laterally relatively thereto, a spring for pressing the extractortoward the ejector, said ejector being carried by the receiver and having means for coacting with the breech-bolt, whereby the advance end of the ejector is positively moved toward said slot and the extractor, and during the inner movement thereof forces the extractor outwardly and laterally through the medium of the interposed cartridge shell against the tension of said spring, the extractor being formed with a shoulder for engaging the front side of the rim, and the ejector being formed with a shoulder for engaging the rear side of the rim, and with surfaces for engaging the edge of the rim and being normally out of engagement with the edge of the rim and engaging said edge of the rim after the shell has been tilted from its straight position by the extractor, said spring acting to force the extractor toward the ejector with a quick movement, as the shell passes out of engagement with said shoulder of the ejector, whereby the edge of the rim is forced against said edge engaging surface of the ejector and the shell given a .whirling movement as it is discharged the ejector and extractor, the extractor beingformed with a shoulder for engaging the front side of the rim of the shell and with a convex face in advance of said shoulder, and the ejector being formed with a shoulder for engaging the rear side of the rim, a surface arranged substantiailly perpendicular to the shoulder for engaging the edge of the rim, and an arcuate surface in advance of the last-named surface, and a spring for giving the extractor a snapping movement toward the ejector for imparting a whirlin movement to the shell, as the rim thereo passes out of engagement with the shoulder and the first-named surface of the ejector, and into engagement with the arcuate surface of the ejector, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
9. In a firearm, a receiver formed with a shell exit slot, mechanism in the receiver including a movable breech bolt, an extractor and an ejector arranged on opposite sides of the breech bolt, the extractor being carried by, and movable with, the breech bolt and also movable laterally relatively to the breech bolt, and the ejector being carried by the receiver and having means for coacting with the breech bolt whereby the advance end of the ejector moves toward said slot and the extractor, and forces the extractor outwardly laterally through the medium of the interposed cartridge shell, the extractor being formed with a shoulder for engaging the front side of the rim of the shell at a point on one side thereof, and the ejector being formed with a shoulder for engaging the rear side of said rim at a diametrically opposite point, and with a concave cam surface in advance of its shoulder, and a springpressed plunger movable with the breech bolt and arranged to engage the extractor and resist lateral movement thereof after the same has been moved laterally a predetermined distance, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
10. In a firearm, a receiver formed with a shell. exit slot, mechanism in the receiver including a movable breech bolt, an extractor and an ejector arranged on opposite sides of the breech bolt, the extractor being carried by, and movable with, the breech bolt and also movable laterally relatively to the breech bolt, and the ejector being carried. by the receiver and having means for coacting with the breech bolt whereby the advance end of the ejector moves toward said slot and the extractor, and forces the extractor outwardly through the medium of the interposed cartridge shell, the extractor being formed with a shoulder for engaging the front side of the rim of the shell at a point at one side thereof and with a convex face at its end in advance of the shoulder, and the ejector being formed with a shoulder for engaging the rear side of said rim at the diametrically opposite point, and with a concave cam surface in advance of its shoulder, a spring for normally preventing lateral movement of the extractor and returning the same to its initial position, and a spring-pressed plunger movable with 1 the breech bolt and arranged to engage the extractor after the same has been moved laterally a predetermined distance, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
11. In a firearm, a receiver formed with a -formed with 21 shell exit slot, a reciprocating breech bolt movable in the receiver and having one side thereof contiguous to the side of the receiver formed with a slot, said side of the breech bolt being formed with a recess having an enlarged entrance and a contracted portion having undercut sides, a cover for said slot, the cover being movable With the breech bolt, and a clamping member comprising a screw threading through the cover and provided with a head at its inner end arranged to pass through the enlarged entrance of said recess, and being moved into the con tracted portion thereof and interlocking With the undercut sides, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
