2 Claims. (Cl. -11) This invention relates to the class of furniture, and more particularly to a novel baby crib.
The primary object of the present invention resides in the provision of novel structure for a crib for babies which is adapted to hold a side member of the crib in a vertically adjusted position.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a baby crib structure which has means associated with the side member of the crib so that when the side member is raised, the bottom member is lowered, and when the side member is lowered, the bottom member is raised, thereby alternatively permitting access to the baby in the crib or providing maximum protection for the baby.
Still further objects of the invention reside in the provision of a novel linkage mechanism which is adapted to raise the bottom member of the crib when a side member is lowered, which consists of cranks supported by brackets attached to the end members of the crib and pivotally attached to connecting links which themselves are pivotally mounted on the side members. The cranks carry rollers which engage the bottom member of the bed.
Other objects and features of this invention reside in the provision of a baby crib structure that is strong and durable, simple in construction and operation, highly eflicient in use, and inexpensive to manufacture, thereby permitting wide distribution and utilization.
These, together with the various ancillary objects and features of the invention which will become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by this baby crib structure, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, by way of example only, wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the baby crib;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view as taken along the plane of line 22 in Figure 1 illustrating the construction of the means for raising the bottom member when one of the side members is lowered;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view as taken along the plane of line 3-3 in Figure 1 illustrating the construction of the spaced guides;
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of the crib;
Figure 5 is a sectional detail view as taken along the plane of line 5-5 in Figure 3, illustrating the construction of the means utilized for holding one side of the crib in a selected position; and
Figure 6 is a sectional detail view as taken along the plane of line 6-6 in Figure 3.
With continuing reference to the accompanying drawings wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, reference numeral 10 generally designates the baby crib comprising the present invention. This baby crib includes a pair of end members 12 and 14 which may be of any selected configuration.
Attached to the end members 12 and 14 are vertically spaced rows of substantially L- shaped brackets 16 and 18 apertured for reception of vertically extending guides ice 20 and 22 arranged in pairs for each of the end members 12 and 14. The upper portions of the guides 20 and 22 are serrated to form toothed portions 24 and 26, respectively.
The casings 40 as well as the casings 42 have slots 48 therethrough through which the guides 20 and 22 extend. Further, slots 50 are provided in the sides of the casings 40 so that pivotally mounted pawls 52 which are mounted on pins 54 and extend into engagement between the teeth 24 and 26 of the vertical guides 20 and 22. Actuation members 56 and 58 having enlarged upper ends are attached to the pawls 52 at suitable portions thereof. Springs 60 and 62 resiliently yieldingly engage the enlarged head of the actuation members 56 and 58 and the casings 40 and 42, respectively, so as to continuously urge the pawls 52 into engagement with the teeth 24 and 26.
Springs 64 are provided for continuously urging the sides 30 upwardly when this side is lowered and the guides are resiliently mounted by means of springs, as at 66.
Pivotally attached to the central supporting standard 38, as at 68, are a pair of connecting links 70 and 72. Attached to the end members 12 and 14 are brackets 74 and 76 of substantially V-shape which have crank arms 78 and 80 pivotally attached thereto, as at 82 and 84. The crank arms 78 and 80 are pivotally attached, as at 86 and 88 to the connecting links, and the crank arms 78 and 80 carry in a rotatable manner rollers 90 and 92 which engage the bottom 94 of the crib at the lower surface thereof. The bottom 94 may have a peripheral framework with a spring pressed foraminous central portion 96 forming a support for a mattress or the like.
The operation of this baby crib structure is quite simple. When this baby crib is used for an infant, the crib may be arranged so that the side 28 is outward. Then, by depression of the actuation members 56 and 58, the pawls 52 may be released, allowing the side 28 to be raised or lowered. Upon lowering of the side 28, the connecting links 52 will pivot, causing the crank arms to pivot, raising the rollers 90 and 92 and thus raising the bottom member 94. It is noted that other rollers 98 and 100 are connected by rods 102 and 104 to the rollers 90 and 92 and engage the bottom 94. These rollers 98 and 100 are suitably mounted on links as at 106 and 108 by means of connecting cranks 110 and 112 with the links 106 and 108 serving as the brackets 74 and 76.
When the baby crib is used with an older child where there is no necessity for raising the bottom 94, the side 30 may be raised or lowered without causing any raising or lowering movement of the bottom 94. It is noted that the bottom 94 is provided with a recess or opening 114 in the peripheral edge thereof so that connecting links 70 and 72 can pass downwardly therethrough.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
