R- `VVOG-DING.
SHADE-RING GLAMP. No. 273,420. l Patented Mar. 6,1883.
fv/vendor' Jeazpg. Mae?,-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RALPH A. WCODING, OF KENSINGTON, ASSIGNORA-TO THE CHARLES PARKER COMPANY, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
SHADE-RING CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,420, dated March'6,.1883.
Application filed January 27, 1883. (No model.) L
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RALPH A.Woonnvef, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kensington, in the county of Hartford and State' of Connecticut, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements,inShade-Ring Clamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the 1o art to which it appertains to make and luse, the
same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which .form a part of this 'specication This invention relates to clamps for securing lamp-shades to shade-rings; and it consists, partly, in combining with said rings pivoted clamps Aand springs, which force these clamps against the neck of the shade.
The said invention consists, further, in the peculiar construction ofthe clamps and of the bearings on which they turn, whereby the action above described is made practicable without attaching the clamps to the shadering or providing any gudgeons or pivot-pins therefor.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a lamp-shade ring provided with my pivoted spring-pressed 3o clamps. Fig. 2 ,represents a vertical section through the same, and Fig. 3 represents a detail view in perspective of one of the said clamps.
The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
Adesignates the body of the'shade-ring, provided with the usual internal horizontal flange or partition,A, which has at regular intervals openings n, that receive the clamps B. The in- 4o ner end of each of these openings is closed by a bar, a', having a stud, a2, projecting into said opening. These bars and studs are cast with the shade-ring, and so, too, is a rounded bead, A2, forming the outer boundary of each.
opening, and serving as the bearing whereon the clamp is pivoted that turns therein.
Each one ofthe clamps B has a curvilinear recess, b, in its back, which fits upon its bearin g-bead A2, allowing said clamp to turn for s l5c grasping the lamp-shade. The front or inner face of each clamp is curved, or constructed with inclines so arranged as to be equivalent to curvature, and provided at its upper end with an inwardly-extending stud, B. A spiral spring, C, in each instance is interposed 5 5 between bar a and clamp B, its ends surrounding studs a2 B', and heldin place thereby. The office of these springs is to force outward the upper ends of the clamps, and thereby cause the inner ends of said clamps toclose upon 6o the neck of the lamp-shade and hold the same suspended. Each clamp is provided with a lateral enlargement of its lower portions, forniing shoulders B2, which overlap the edges of the opening in which it turns, so that the pressure of the spring will not force said clamp up `out of its proper position.
A clamp thus constructedl is held at all times very securely in place without any actual attachment tothe shade-ring, and turns 7o pivotally with no gudgeons and with no pivotpin.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 75 l. In combination with a shade ring and springs, a set of shade-clamps turning pivotally within or upon said shade-ring and forced against the shade by the action of said springs, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with ashade-ring having bearing-beads formed upon it, a set of springpressed clamps having their hacks recessed curvilinearlytoturn upon said beads, substan tially as set forth.
3. In combination with a shade-ring'having openings in its horizontal inner flange, a set of clamps pivoted in said openings, and having lateral shoulders below the same, which extend beyond them on each side, and a series 9o of springs which bear against the upper ends ot' said clamps, and thereby force their lower ends inward, for the purpose set forth.
1n testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
