LOUIS T. PYOTT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DRIVING DEVICE FOR METAL-PLANERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,150, dated February 27, 1883.
7 Application filed November 9, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs T. PYOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia. and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Driving Devices for Metal-Planers, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention relates to a driving device for imparting to the table of a metal-planing machine a traversing movement; and it consists of two vertical shafts provided with pinionwheels, which latter gearinto double horizontal racks bolted centrally to the under portion of the planer-table. The lower ends of said vertical shafts are provided With Worm-wheels, which gear into right and left worms placed upon the drive-shaft; and also in adapting the usual support or legs, as placed under the center of the bed, to form bearings and casings for the driving attachment, said casings being bolted to the lower flanges of the bed. The screw or driving shaft is placed transversely to the planer, thus allowing the actuating-pulleys to revolve in the same direction as in the ordinary planer, requiring a less comtable, which is a decided advantage in the arshort strokes. The double horizontal racks affording increased wearing-surface, less accuracy is required in adjusting relations of table and bed. The driving mechanism is protected from dust and grit at top by means of guards, and at bottom by the casing or frame, which is supplied with cavities containing oil for lubrication.
In the accompanying drawings I have represented my driving mechanism attached to an ordinary metal-planer, having a reciprocatin g movement imparted to the table or carriage by means of my driving device.
Figure 1 is a transverse section on the line 1 1, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3
is a plan from beneath.
1 1 are upright frames, connected at the top by a tie or cross-beam, 2, and bolted at the 7 bottom to the upper flanges, 3 3, of the bedplate 4.
5 is the reciprocating table, moving in V- slides 6 6.
7 7 are pinion-wheels, which gear into horizontal racks 8 8. Said pinion wheels are placed on vertical shafts 9 9, which latter are provided at their lower ends with worm-wheels 10 10, gearing into right and left worms 11 and Power being applied to the actuatingpulley or pulleys 14 14, the horizontal driving-shaft 13 is rotated, and with it the right and left worms 11 and 12, which respectively cause the worm-wheels 10 10 to revolve in opposite directions. This movement is communicated, by means of the vertical shafts 9 9, to the pinion-wheels 7 7, which in turn, by gearing into the racks 8 8, impart to the table 5 a reciprocating movement in its guide 6 6. The drive in g-shaft 13, being situate transversely to the planer, allows the actuating-pulleys 14 14 to be placed in the same position as in the ordinary planer-A ia, at the side thereofthus requiring aless complicated device to reverse the movement of the table 5 than if placed at the end.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, in a metal-planing machine having table 5, of the racks 8 8, pinionwheels 7 7, and worm-wheels 10 10 on the vertical shafts 9 9, and right and left worms 11 and 12 on the transverse driving-shaft 13, for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in a metal-planing machine and its driving mechanism, of the frame or casing 17 and gear-supports 19 19, the said frame and supports being cast in one piece, substantially as and for the purpose setforth.
LOUIS T. IYOTT.
