Description

Dec. 13, 1955 G. L. COSGROVE 2,726,665
CIGARETTE HOLDER Filed Sept. 14, 1950 F/GTI iinhcmut GEORGE L COSGROVE Eillumcp Unite States 3 Claims. (Cl. 131 59) The present invention relates to cigarette holders and has for its main object the provision of a holder including a handle member whereby a cigarette may be gripped intermediate its ends and smoked without it being touched with the hands.
Another object is to provide a holder having a standard thereon available for enabling placement of the holder on a desk or the like with a lighted cigarette therein held clear of the desk and preferably over an ash tray.
Further objects and features of the invention will be evident from a further perusal of the specification when read in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof.
In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a cigarette holder embodying the invention occupying a socket therefor on an ash tray.
Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the holder of Fig. 1 as seen when viewed in the direction indicated in Fig. 1 by arrow 2.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged isometric view of a fragment of the cigarette gripping portion of the holder.
Fig. 3A is an enlarged view, partly in section, of a fragment of the holder assembly.
Referring now particularly to Figs. 1-3A, an ash tray 11 is provided with a holder 12 for receipt of the handle 13. Handle 13 as shown is of generally rectangular configuration and at its upper end is bifurcated to accommodate coil springs 14 and 15 constituting parts or" the cigarette holder clamping mechanism. Handle 13 is also provided with a bore 16 to accommodate a shank 17 formed of part of the same wire from which springs 14 and 15 are formed. 7
The cigarette clamping mechanism is preferably made from a single piece of piano wire or the like, the midsection thereof being formed into the shank 17 and adjacent thereto being formed the coil springs 14 and 15. As clearly shown in Fig. 3, springs 14 and 15 comprise two adjacent convolutions in clockwise directions and counterclockwise directions respectively with the end runs 18 and 19 extended in a direction opposite to the extension of shank 17 and being preferably provided with suitable pads 20. Beyond pads 20 the end runs 18 and 19 cross one another and at their free ends are formed into cigarette gripping jaws 24. In the structure illustrated jaws 24 are for better appearance provided with liners 25 and, as will be understood, ar: normally maintained in gripping position under tension of springs 14 and 15. By pressing the pads 20 between the thumb and the index finger the ilws 24 may be opened for insertion of a cigarette thcrebetween or to release a cigarette therefrom.
Handle portions 21 and 22 are transversely pierced to atent receive a pin 23 which passes through the bores of springs 14 and 15 and locks the same to handle 13. The pin 23 is held in place by the ends 26 and 27 of a wire standard 28. When not in use standard 28 is arranged substantially parallel to handle 13 as shown in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2, but is adapted to be turned to the alternative position indicated by interrupted lines in Fig. 2 against stop surfaces such as at 29 when the holder has a lighted cigarette therein and is to be placed on a desk or the like.
What is claimed is:
1. In combination, a handle with laterally spaced portions having aligned apertures passing transversely through such portions and having a bore therein normal to such apertures in a space intermediate said portions, article gripping means having a shank end portion occupying said bore and an article gripping portion located remote from its shank end, said article gripping means including intermediate its shank and gripping portions two helical springs Wound in opposte directions forming passages therethrougn about an axis common to that of said aligned apertures and occupying the area between said laterally spaced portions, means projecting through such passages and into said apertures to aid in holding said article gripping means attached to said handle, and a standard having ends also entering said apertures.
2. In combination, a handle with laterally spaced portions having aligned apertures passing transversely through such portions and having a bore therein normal to such apertures in a space intermediate said portions, article gripping means having a shank end portion occupying said bore and an article gripping portion located remote from its shank end, said article gripping means including intermediate its shank and gripping portions two helical springs Wound in opposite directions forming passages therethrough about an axis common to that of said aligned aperturesand occupying the area between said laterally spaced portions, and means projecting through such passages and into said apertures to aid in holding said article gripping means attached to said handle, and including a standard occupying said apertures.
3. In an article assembly, a handle having laterally spaced portions at one end thereof, an article gripping mechanism in part occupying the space between such portions, a standard stop means provided on each of said portions, a standard pivoted in such portions and movable into engagement with said stop means, and pin means bridging the space between said laterally spaced portions for retaining said article gripping means therebetween, said standard having pivot parts cooperative with such portions for containing said pin means therein to aid in the maintenance of said gripping mechanism secured to said handle.
