Description

Dec. 6, 1955 P. L. SMITH 2,725,979
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA ER l v Pal/IL.
U d States ce ratentd Dec. 6, 1955 CIGARETTE PACKAGE MATCH HOLDER Paul L. Smith, New Bedfo'd, Mass. i Application December 18, 1952, Serial No. 326,672 3 claims. (Cl. 206-'-'-48) This invention relates to combination cigarette package and match holders, and in particular a paper match package or booklet having a continuous flange extended therefrom whereby matches may be permanently attached to the end of a package of cigarettes.
The purpose of this invention is to provide means for incorporating matches in a package of cigarettes s'o that matches are available continuousl'y and wherein the match booklet or folder reinforces the cigarette package.
Varous attempts have been made to combine booklets or packages of paper matches with cigarette packages, however, where the matchesare held on'the sides or ends of a cigarette package it is diflicult to pack cigarette packages in a carton, dispenser chute or rack. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates amethod of securing a match package to a package of 'cigarettes wherein the match package is positioned on one end of the package of cigarettes.
The Object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means for mounting a match booklet or package on a package of cigarettes whereby the match folder is positioned on the bottom of the cigarette package.
Another Object of the invention is to provide a match booklet adapted to be mounted on the end of a package of cigarettes wherein the match package is selectively incorporated in the cigarette package, or secured to the outer surface of the package.
A further Object of the invention is to provide a package of cigarettes having a match package or booklet in combination therewith in which the parts are of simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the nvention embodies a match package having a rectangular-shaped back or base, the length and Width of which correspond to Similar dimensions of a package of cigarettes and in which matches with an abrading strip and cover are mounted on one side of the base and in which a continuous flange extends from the opposite side thereof.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a erspective view showing a cigarette package with a match book mounted on one end thereof.
Figure 2 is a view looking upwardly toward the lower end of the cigarette package shown in Fg. 1 with the cover of the match book extended and with parts of the cover broken away.
Figure 3 is a side elevational view illustrating the match book with the mounting flange extended from the back and With part of said mounting flange broken away showing layers of matches extended into the area defined by the flange.
Figure 4 is an elevational view showing an end of a package of cigarettes With parts broken away illustrating a match book mounted on the end of the cigarette package With a continuous flange of the match book positioned between the outer wrapper of the package of 2 cigarettes and the fol extended around the cigarettes in the package. V
Referring now to the drawing wherein like' reference characters denote corresponding parts the cigarette package match hold'er of this invention includes a match book having a base or back 10 with inner layers of matches 11 extended through a slot 12 in the base, with outer layers' of matches 13 positioned against the base, with a cover 14 extended from one end of the base and folded over so that the extended edge thereof is adapted to be inserted under a strip 15 of abrasive material, and a continuous flange 16 which extends around the sides and ends of the base 10 and which is positioned to extend under a wrapper 17 of a package 18 of cigarettes, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, or whereby it may extend over a package of cigarettes so that it may be frictionally' secured to the outer surface thereof.
As illustrated in Fig. 3 the continuous flange 16 forms side and end walls of a hollow rectangular-shaped receptacle in which one end is open and in which the opposite end is closed with thematch book. The cavity of this receptacle is adapted to receive the end of a cigarette package and with the parts formed as illustrated and described the entire device may be formed of a flat sheet of material.
As illustrated in Figure 3 the abrasive strip 15 is secured to the stems of the matches with a staple 19 and the stems of the matches are secured to the back 10 with a staple 20.
A strip of abrasive material 15 is mounted on a backing strip and secured in position With a ,staple in the center whereby the edge of the strip extended toW'ard the heads of the matches is adapted to be moved outwardly So that the extended edge of the cover* may be inserted between the abrasive strip and matches with the cover in the cIosed position. With several layers of matches extended through the slot 12 so that they are positioned on the under side of the base of the match book or between the base 10 and the end of apackag'e of cigarettes or the like, the projecting area beyond the base is reduced to a minimum.
With the parts formed in this manner the flange 16 is positioned over the conventional foil or other wrapper, as indicated by the numeral 21, which extends around the cigarettes, as shown in Fig. 4 and with the flange 16 in position the printed wrapper 5 is placed around the package and the outer celophane or plastic wrapper 17 is placed on the package whereby the wrappers retain the match book in position on the end of the package of cigarettes.
The parts may be secured in position with suitable adhesive or other means.
With the ends of the outer wrapper 17 folded, as illustrated at the point 22 in Fig. 1 the match book is protected and forms an integral part of the cigarette package.
The invention, therefor, includes a box-like casing havng side walls 23 and 24, end walls formed with overlapping flaps 25 and 26 at one end and 27 and 23 at the other end and a base, as indicated by the numeral 10 and, as illustrated in Figure 3, the base is provided with a slot 12 through which matches 11 extend. The base is also provided with extended ends or tabs 29 and 30, the end 30 being folded over with an arcuate section whereby the end 30 is positioned against ends of stems of the matches. The abrasive strip 15 is secured against the outer surface of the end 30 by the staple 19 and the extended edge of the end 30 is adapted to be bent upwardly so that the extended end of the cover 14 which extends from the section 29 of the base may be inserted between the end 28 and the stems of the matches.
The cigarette package may be of conventional size or may be long or short as may be desired.
The match book or package may also be of conventional design, however, the match book may be formed with layers of matches extended through the back and with additional layers positioned against the face of the back, as may be desired.
It Will also be understood that the match book and mounting elcments, particularly as llustrated in Fig. 3 may be provided as independent units and sold or distributed for advertising purposes whereby the purchaser of a package of cigarettes may apply the match book unit to the package.
With the match book secured to the package of cigarettes as an added unit or as an integral part thereof the structure of the match book reinforces the package of cigarettes facilitatng retaining the cigarettes in their original circular form.
It will be understood that modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
