SAVAGE, of Ashtahnla, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Buttons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification. I

This invention relates to the class of buttons that are provided with wire shanks having eyes by which they are to be secured to garments.

The invention consists in providing the back of a button with a-wirc shank having elongated ends, one of which is rigidly secured thereto, and the other, which is pointed, is adapted to be held under an elastic tongue out out of the said bark, as hereinafter more fully described, the object being to secure the button to a garment by piercing the latter with the pointed shank, and by means of the elongated ends of the shank to provide a bearing for the cloth to prevent strain upon the back, by which the ordinary wire shank is often parted therefrom.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view, showing the back of the button; and Fig. 2 is an edge view, showing the button attached to a piece of cloth.

Heretol'ore buttons having wire shanks have had both ends of the shank rigidly secured to the back, with which construction it is necessary to attach the button to a garment by means of a needle and thread. This construction is objectionable, because the thread soon wears out, and also because, when the garment is buttoned. it creates a strain upon the hack of the button and tends to pull out the shank. I therefore construct a shank, A, formed of a piece of wire bent upon itselt in any desirable manner to format: eye, a, with the ends I) b of the wire extended in opposite directions, either entirely across the backB or only partially across the same, as shown. One end, b, of theshank is rigidly secured to the back of the button in such manner that the eye will heat the center thereof, and the other end, b, which is pointed,is adapted to be bent under an elastic tongue, c, cut out of the back of the button.

To facilitate the attachment of the button to a garment, the eye ofthe shank may be bent shank, and a slight turn is to be given the button to cause the portion of the cloth in engagetnent with the shank to enter the eye, when the point is to be placed under the tongue.

With this construction the edge of the button-hole rests upon the elongated ends of the shank as they lie upon the back, thereby pre venting any strain lrom coming on the back.

Having thus desc ibed my invention,what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

1. The combination, with the back of a button, of ashank made of a piece of wire doubled upon itself to form an eye, and havingits ends extended in opposite directions, with the eye laid fiat upon the back, and having one end rigidly secured to the back, and the other pointed and adapted to be detachably secured by a catch on the back, substantially as shown and described, whereby any strain upon the button shall be thrown upon the ends of the shank, as set forth.

' 2. The combination of the back of a button having an elastic tongue out out of the same, and the shank formed of a piece of wire having an eye at the center, and its ends extended across orpartially across the back, one of which is rigidly secured thereto, and the other,
