The ply 22 of the turn-down portion 9 of the collar is made wider than the companion ply 23 in order to provide a. lip extension 3i which projects below and conceals the fastening tabs 28 when the collarband and the turn-down portieri of the collar are assembled as shown in Figure 6.

The edge of the stirening strip 26 along which the turn-down portion of the collar 9 is folded to provide the inturned upper edge l@ may be straight but is preferably scalloped as indicated at 32 in Figure l2. This 70 scalloped contour prevents wrinkling of the inturned edge it) of the turn-down portion of the collar when the latter is fastened about the neck of the wearer. It may also be pointed out here that by giving the turndown portion 9 of the collar a greater curvature than the collarband 7 the formation of wrinkles at the reinforced inturned edge 10 is substantially eliminated.

In order to ensure a neat appearance and a loose cornfortable tit of the collarV despite unequal shrinkage of the collarband 7 and the turn-down portion 9, it is desirable to make the pocket openings 17 and the pockets in which the fastening tabs 28 are inserted slightly wider than said tabs.

If it is desired to provide a turn-down collar of the relatively stiti or fused-ply type this may be accomplished by making the interliner 24 of the turn-down portion 9 of thermoplastic material and fusing it to the outer and

inner plies

22 and 23.

In the modification shown in Figures 7 to 9 inclusive, the stiffened portions of the fastening tabs 28 of turn-down portion 9 are passed upwardly through button hole openings provided in the inner ply 13 and interlining 14 of collarband 7. In this case the upper portions of the inner ply 13 and interlining 14 of collarband 7 are fused to an inte1posed stiffening strip 36 which lies directly above the button holes 35 and stiiens the upper portion of the collarband in such manner as to make it easier to insert and remove the fastening tabs 28 by means of which the turn-down portion 9 is secured to the collarband 7.

In the modification shown in Figures 7 to 9 inclusive, the stiffened portions 30 of the fastening tabs 28 which are passed upwardly through the button hole openings 35 lie between the interlining 14 and the outer ply 12 of collarband 7 and are thus concealed from view. At the inner side of collarband 7 the tabs 28 are concealed from View by the aforesaid lip extension 31 of the turndown portion of the collar.

As seen more particularly in Figures l0 to 12, fastening tabs 28 have a particular shape which has proved advantageous both for assembling and disassembling the turn-down portion 9 and collarband 7. Moreover, this particular form prevents accidental disassembling of

9 and 7 and allows for inequality of shrinkage between collarband 7 and portion 9 after laundering. The flexible internal part 29 of fastening tabs 28 has a rectangular form and is integral with a stitened outer part 30 which spreads out fanwise and may advantageously have an outer edge 37 in the form of a circumferential arc. As seen in Figure 10 the fastening tabs, in one particular design, have a flexible internal part 29 of rectangular form and a stiened outer part whose surface is limited by a substantially elliptical arc 37, the length of which exceeds half the ellipse, and by two

38 and 39 drawn to said elliptical arc, by the extremities 40 and 41 of this arc and terminating at two

corners

42 and 43 of the rectangle constituting the flexible part 29 of the fastening tabs. As Figures 10 and l1 show, the distance between one end 44 of the major axis 45 of the above-mentioned ellipse and the meeting point 43 of the flexible part 29 with tangent 39, which point is situated,` in relation to the extremity on the opposite side of the minor axis 46 of the ellipse, is substantially equal to the length of the opening of pockets 17 or button holes 35. In other words, the distance 43-44 corresponds to the length of the pockets or buttonholes in question.

What I claim is:

l. A detachable collar assembly for shirts comprising an innerband having one longitudinal edge secured to the shirt, an outer detachable portion covering the outer side of said band and having an inturned edge of less Width than the band, this inturned edge being titted over the free longitudinal edge of the band and overlying a part of the inner side of said band, and fastening means detachably securing the inturned edge of said outer portion to said band and a stiffening member extending along and stitfening the free longitudinal marginal portion of'said inturned edge, the lower edge of said stilfening member being scalloped to minimize wrinkling of said inturned edge when the collar assembly is secured in place around the neck of the wearer, said fastening means consisting of tabs carried on the edge turned towards the outside of said outer detachable portion and extending into pockets provided in said band, said tabs presenting a flexible internal portion of substantially rectangular shape having a stilfened outer portion which expands fanwise and has an outer edge in the form of an arc.

A detachable collar assembly as set forth in claim l, in which the surface of said tabs is limited on the one hand by a substantially elliptical arc the length of which exceeds that of half the ellipse, and on the other hand by two tangents drawn to said elliptical arc, by the extremities of this arc, and terminating at two corners of the rectangle forming the flexible interior of the tabs.

A detachable collar assembly as set forth in claim 2, in which the distance between one extremity of the major axis of the aforementioned ellipse and the point where the tangent meets said flexible portion situated, in relation to said extremity, on the other side of the minor axis of the ellipse, is substantially equal to the length of the opening of said pockets.

A detachable collar assembly as set forth in claim l, in which the aforementioned pockets are formed in a stilened strip which is narrower than the aforementioned band and which extends along the inner side of this band starting from the free longitudinal edge of this latter band and is joined to it in such a way as to present from place to place at its lower edge openings permitting the introduction of said tabs between said band and said strip.

5. A detachable collar assembly as set forth in claim l, in which spaced button holes are formed in said band to provide openings for said pockets.

6. A detachable collar assembly as set forth in claim 5, in which a stifening strip is incorporated in said band and is disposed between the aforementioned button holes and the free longitudinal end of said band.
