ooooo e -o-s obo . y gf /ljyz Y l jm UNITED STATES PATENT OEI-rca MAURICE DINNEEN, or BoSToN, MASSACHUSETTS.
` FAUCET.
- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,536, dated February 20, 1883.
Application filed June 9, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAURICE DINNEEN, a citizen ofthe United States ofAmerica, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Faucets and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescrption of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciiication, and in which- Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view, showingthe cap, key, and faucet properly separated from the locking device, which is shown open. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section, showing the several parts in place and the locking device closed. Fig. 3 is an enlarged end view of thelockingdevice. Fig. lis an enlarged side elevation ofthe key with the faucet protruding. Fig. 5 is an enlarged end view ofthe key.
My invention relates more particularly to that class known as 1ock-fauoets; and it consists of the construction and operation of parts, as will be hereinafter more particularly setforth, and pointed out in the claims.
Preferably all the parts of this device are constructed ot'a suitable metal or composition, and the parts are nished and fitted to form tight joints.
A represents the head or any other suitable part of a cask or other package for containing liquids, bored and countersunk to receive a cylindrical case, E, provided with an annular ange, E,1'or the outside end of the case, which may be provided with a packing, if desired.
Inside of the head A a washer, B', is provided, surrounding the case and tittingclose up againstthe head, or an interposed packing, when provided, and held in place by acap, B, having an internal screw-thread fitting the thread e upon the inner end of the case E. The cap B projects inward any desired distance, is perforated by holes b of any desired size, and acts as a shield for the openings of the passage of the faucet.
(No model.)
The interior of the case E is finished to receive a plug, C, of peculiar construction, so as to form a liquid-tight joint. The plug G is provided with a hollow screw-neck or extension, o, that passes through and works within a screw-threaded opening made for it through the end e of the case E, and at its outerend is provided with a button, c', finished to tit tightly against the end of the end e and be liquid-tight. A passage, o3, is bored through the center of the plug C to the buttonw, and near its inner end is provided with any desired number of openings, c2, to admit liquid into the passage c3 when the button o is back ofthe end and the locking device thereby opened.
The outer end ot' the plug C has ascrewthreaded recess, somewhat larger than the passage c3, for the reception of the screw-threaded endfof the faucet F. A flangc,f, extends from the faucet F into the passage and assists in making the tight joint necessary, and in directing the barrel of the faucet so as to engage the threads. The outer end of the plug C is provided with an annular flange, within which is a recess the bottom of which forms a shoulder for'the reception of the end anges of the key D, and the sides ot' which are cut away to make recesses c4 c, t0 receive the lugs or wards d of the key D. The key D is cylindrical, linished to fit the case E, and has an open center for the reception of the barrel ofthe faucet, which passes through the key and enters the plug C, as hereinbet'ore described, the annular shoulders 71, forcing the wards ot' the key into their recesses and holding them there. The key D is provided with handles d d for turning the key, and the faucet F has a plug, F', by means of which the faucet F is opened and closed.
In the operation of my device, it being closed, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the faucet F and key D are inserted, as therein shown, and the key D turned until the plug O is screwed into the cap to the position shown in dotted lines, when the faucctwill be unlocked and ready for the passage of the liquid upon turning ofthe plug F.
Having thus described myinvention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. rIhe locking-plug C, constructed with re- IOO cesses c4 c, screw-thread o5, and passage c3, in In testimony whereof Iafx my signature in 1o combination with the key D, having wards d presence of two witnesses. d, and the faucetJ F, having,` screw-thread f and projecting flange f', and the case E, substan MAURICE DINNEEN. tially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of the case E with the Witnesses: cap B and washer B', the plug C, the key D, J. P. J. WARD, and faucet F, all constructed and arranged M. J. DINNEEN. substantially as and for the purpose described.
