Description

United States Patent FILTER DIVISION STRIP Henry C. Cataldo, Springfield, N. 5., assignor to Filtration Engineers Incorporated, Newark, N. 3., a corporation of New York Application May 6, 1953, Serial No. 353,382
1 Claim. (Cl. 210-199) This invention relates to drum type compartmentized filters of the well-known type incorporating spaced, parallel division strips extending longitudinally of the drum surface and drainage members located between the strips.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved type of division strip and cooperating drainage member construction.
The preferred form of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which is a cross-section of the portion of the periphery of a drum, omitting the usual pipes and other details having no relation to the invention.
The division strips 1 are welded or otherwise suitably secured to the outer surface of the drum shell 2 and, as will be seen, incorporate along their sides oppositely opening grooves 3, 4 disposed at diiierent distances from the drum surface. More specifically, the strips are of substantially S-shaped cross section, into which form they can be milled from bar stock or formed up from strip or sheet metal, as will be understood. The oppositely opening grooves are thus overlapped.
Cooperating with the strips are drainage members 5 which, as is well known, may consist of any one of a variety of suitable materials. The indicated members Patented Nov. 22, 1955 may be formed, for example, of molded rubber; but, of whatever form or material, they are provided along their opposite edges With flanges 6, 7 which are similarly disposed to lie at different distances from the drum surface for interlocking engagement with the correspondingly located division strip grooves.
It will thus be seen that since both the drainage member flanges and their locating grooves are overlapped, the division strip can be quite narrow and the dead area of the filter surface thereby reduced to a minimum. This is of particular advantage in connection, for example, with so-called string discharge filters in that it greatly facilitates the formation of a continuous cake.
In the light of the foregoing description, the following is claimed:
A drum type compartmentized filter, comprising the combination with a drum of a series of division strips secured to and extending longitudinally of the drum surface, each said strip incorporating along its sides oppositely opening grooves disposed at different distances from the drum surface, and drainage members arranged around the drum surface intermediate the division strips, each said member having an end flange at each end, the end flanges of each member being likewise disposed at different distances from the drum surface for interlocking engagement in the grooves of the division strips.
