Description

W Y T. M. BLAOKSTO GK FASTENING DEVICE FOR mums.
No. 272,406. Patented rebfzo, 1883.
u, FEIERS. Phminhoww UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFIcE.
THOMAS M. BLAOKSTOOK, OF SHEBOYGAN, WISCONSIN.
FASTEN ING DEVICE FOR CHAIRS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272.406, dated February 20, I883.
' Application filed October 16,1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS M. BLACK- STOOK, of Sheboygan, in the county of Sheboygan and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices for Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvementin fastening devices for securing the backs of chairs to the seats, the object of same being to provide a device of this character which shall combine simplicity and neatness of construction with durability and efficiency in use.
With these ends in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view of a chair seat and back, one end thereof being represented in section, showing my improved fastening device. Fig. 2 is an en larged sectional view of one corner of a chair and a sectionv of the back or how, showing my improved method of securing the back of a chair to the seatof the same. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the securing-plate.
In Fig. l, A represents the seat of a chair provided with a back, B. The ends G C of this back orbow are formed as tenons, which are inserted in the socket or holes D in the corners of the seat, at its forward end, the shoulder of the tenon resting on the seat.
A clamping or securing plate, E, is secured to the under side of the chair-seat by means'of two or more lugs, a. This plate is centrally provided with a hole or perforation, F, for the admission of a screw, G, which is passed through the perforation F and screwed into down until the shoulders rest firmly and evenly on the seat, while at the same time the lugs or .projections on the securing-plate tend to compress the'wood around theend of the bow and prevent the seat from splitting, and further insures a neat and secure joint, and with capability of easy adj ustment, should the swellingor contraction of the wood so require.
Heretofore the bent arms, backs, or bows of chairs have been secured to the seatsby means of a wooden wedge driven into the end of the how after ithas been passed through the socket in the seat. This has proven a. very insecure fastening, as the wood in the bow is liable to shrink and become loose in the socket, thereby weakening the chair at the most vital point. These objectionable features are entirely obviated in my improved device, which is neat in appearance, effective in use, and of but slight initial cost.
In view of the fact that manyslight changes 'in the construction and relative arrangement of the different parts might be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my-invention, I would have it understood that I do notlimit myself to the exact construction shown and described. For instance, a bolt might be passed down through the center of the bow and be secured by a small nut below the plate, or a barbed nail might be substituted for the screw; and therefore I hold myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a chair-seat and seatback, the ends of the latter being tenoned and inserted in holes or sockets formed in the seat, of metal plates provided with fastening-points secured to the under side of the seat on opposite sides'of the holes or sockets, and screws inserted through the metal plates and extending into the tenons of the back, substantially as set forth.
fieation in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS M. BLAOKS'IOGK.
I 9 In testimonywhereof I have signed this speciv
