Description

J. K. FRANCIS Nov. 8, 1955 PACKING CORD, BEADING CORD, EDGE ROLL AND THE LIKE Filed OCT.. 16, 1951 United States PACKING CORD, READING CORD, EDGE RGLL AND ATHE LIKE John K. Francis, Grand Rapida-Mich., assigner to Sackner Products, Inc., Grand Rapids, Mich., a corporation of Michigan i Y t Application October 16, 1951, Serial No. 251,615
7 Claims. (Cl. 37-1) and is of substantially uniform section and of substantial' resilience.
Second, to provide an article of this character in which the body portion is formed of cellulose tissue or the like and has a braided wrapping `which effectively prevented objectionable unwrapping when the article is severed into sections for use.
Third, to provide a structure of this character in which the surface is substantially smooth, the wrapping strands being` substantially embedded in the surface of the resilient body.
Objectsrelating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the descripiton to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. l is an enlarged fragmentary side elevational view of a packing or beading cord embodying my invention, the parts being shown mainly in conventional form.
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view on line 2--2 of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective View of a wrapping strand.
In the accompanying drawing parts are shown in conventional form owing to the diiculty in illustrating the materials and in proper proportions. It will be understood however that structures embodying my invention are made of various diameters depending on the particular use to Which they are to be put or requirements of the particular use.
My invention is an adaptation of an improvement upon the structure shown in the Cook Patent 2,557,343 issued June 19, 1951.
In the commercial practice of my invention l form an elongated body l usually of cylindrical section from a strip or strips of creped tissue conventionally illustrated at 2. These strips 2 are desirably creped and are crumpled transversely and compressed into an elongated body of substantially uniform section and of substantial resilience, that is, the body is not compacted to the degree of hardness or to the extent of destroying resilience.
This body is provided with a wrapping of strands and preferably glass ber strands 3 of flattened cross section, as illustrated. The wrapping strands are braided upon the body into an open mesh with the strands extending spirally around the body. The strands in the preferred form are composed of glass filaments or fibers and im pregnated with a wax, preferably a microcrystalline wax flexibly binding the glass fibers together and coating the strands. One of the strands is conventionally illustrated in Fig. 3. A plurality of the strands are braided upon the body binding, and While retaining it generally in its formed shape, permit its being bent and conformed to the particular adaptation or use. The strands are braided atent O 2,722,861 Patented Nov. 8, 1955 ICC in open mesh closely embracing relation to the body andunder such tension that they are embedded in the body.
As stated, strands in the preferred form are of attened cross section and are braided into open mesh around the body with the strands' extending spirally of the body. The Wax provides a substantially smooth coating for the strands and results in the strands having much greater tensile strength than cotton thread or yarn and also results in the packing or beading cord or edge roll having a smooth exterior.
To prevent substantial unwrapping or unwinding of the Wrapping strands when the cord or roll is cut I provide the body with a longitudinally extending strip of flexible nontacky adhesive 4. This is applied after the wrapping strands are braided on the body and extends over the strands and connects them to the body. A Waterdispersed synthetic resin is satisfactory, although other adhesives may be used if they are characterized by being substantially nontacky and liexible when set.
When a water dispersed resin is used the product maintains its iiexibility after the 'application of the adhesive stripv thereto. When organic solvent is used it tends to stiffen or detract somewhat from the flexibility of the product and applicant believes that this is due to the tendency of the organic solvent to `penetrate the wax of the strands and bind them and fixedly connect them at their crossing points; K t
Cords or rolls embodying my invention are produced in lengths of several yards and merchandised by winding on spools or reels so that the user can cut off sections of the desired length.
Applicant is aware that packings, beading cords and edged rolls have been formed of tissue or other suitable fibrous cellulose compressed and secured by a wrapping braided thereon as shown, for example in the Sackner Patent 2,250,776 in which the wrapping is formed of cotton thread and, as stated in the Cook patent in which the Wrapping strands areof glass fiber.
Sackner attempted to reduce the tendency of the threads to unwrap by adhesively securing the threads or strands to the core throughout the length of the strands. To produce that product, however, requires special apparatus and the adhesive clogs and requires quite frequent cleaning of the braiding machines and around the machines.
In the applicants structure the adhesive strip 3 is applied after the wrapping is applied and preferably before winding on a spool or reel. It may be applied as a continuous operation and with a simple apparatus and with the use of relatively small amount of adhesive inasmuch as the strands are spiralled about the body and are bound to body by the adhesive strip.
I have not attempted to illustrate the various embodiments and adaptations of my invention as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to adapt my invention as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters iatent is:
l. A packing cord, beading cord, edge roll and the like comprising cellulose tissue crumpled and compressed into an elongated body of substantially uniform section and of substantial resilience, a wrapping of glass iiber strands braided into open mesh thereon with the strands extending spirally around the body, each strand being composed of a plurality of glass fibers and being impregnated with a binder flexibly binding the glass fibers together and coating the strands, and a relatively narrow substantially straight strip of flexible nontacky adhesive on the surface of and extending longitudinally of the wrapped body across the wrapping strands and contacting the body at the sides of the strands and connecting portions of each strand to the body.
