United States Patent CONCRETE PICKET FENCE FORM Ellis E. Landrum, Hialeah, Fla. Application March 20, 1952, Serial No. 277,527 2 claims. (C 1. -25-'1z1 This invention relates to new and useful improvements in concrete forms and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a form for the palings of concrete fences.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a concrete picket fence form including a channel member having a longitudinally adjustable paling end shaping element at one end portion and a transverse blocker plate at its other end portion, whereby palings of various lengths may be formed in a convenient mannet.
-A further object of the present invention is to provide a concrete picket fence form wherein the paling and shapting element is quickly and readily "replaced by different shaped elements, to permit the tops of palings to be 's'uitably shaped.
still further aim of the present invention is to provi'd'e a "concrete picket fence form that-is simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, neat and attractive in appearance, small, compact and light weight in structure, inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise Well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operations as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which;
Figure l is a fragmentary elevational view of a concrete picket fence whose palings are formed by using the present invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of the present invention.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary top plan view of Figure 2 and with parts of the paling top shaping element broken away;
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of the paling top shaping element shown in Figures 2 and 3;
Figure 5 is a bottom plan view of the paling top shaping element in modified form;
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a paling top shaping element that will form a tapered end on a paling;
Figure 7 is a perspective view of a paling top shaping element that will form a tapered top and fiat upper edge on apaling;
Figure 8 is a perspective view of a paling top shaping element that will form a straight top edge and concave corner top recesses in a paling;
Figure 9 is a perspective view of a paling top shaping element that will form a convex top edge and concave corner recesses in a paling;
Figure 10 is a perspective view of a paling top shaping element that will form a rounded convex edge on a paling; and,
Figure 11 is a fragmentary perspective view taken from the opposite side of Figure 3.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral 10 represents anelongated channel shaped member having a .pair of spaced parallel leg portions 12 and 14 that are joined by a web portion 16.
A closure or blocking plate 18 extends transversely of the member 10 at the bottom end thereof and its end edges are fixed by welding or the like to the leg portions 12 and 14, and its lower edge is fixed by welding or the like to the web portion 16. The longitudinal side edges of the leg portions 12 and 14 are bent downwardly and outwardly to provide flanges 20 and 22 that are coplanar with each other and parallel to the web portion 16.
A paling top shaping element 24 is 'slidably received within the top end portion of the channel member 10. The element 24 includes a top plate 26 whose ends 28 and 30 over-lie the flanges 20 and 22. A U-sha-ped strengthening member 32 is fixed to the undersurface of the plate 26 and secures therein a V-shaped contour member 34 Whose apex is fixed by welding or the like to the web of the member 32. The legs of the member 34 are also fixed to the legs of the member 32 and to the edges of a V-shaped notch formed in plate 26.
The ends 28 and 30 of the plate 26 are formed with apertures 36 and 38 for registering with longitudinally spaced apertures 40 and 42 in the flanges 20 and 22. Bolts 44 and 46 are extended through the apertures 36 and 38 and apertures 40 and 42 in registry therewith and nuts 48 arethreaded on the bolts to hold the element 24 longitudinally adjusted in the channel member 10.
V The V-shaped member 34 extends completely between the inner faces of the leg portions 12 and 14 so that when concrete is poured into the member 10 the top end of the pa-ling P for-med in member 10 will have a pointed end B. The length of the pali-ngs may be varied by adjusting theelernent24 toward or away from the end plate 18.
Figure 5 shows the paling top shaping element 24a in modified form including a top .plate 26a whose ends 28a and 30a are formed with apertures 36a and 33a for registering with the apertured flanges of member 10. A V- shaped contour member 34a is fixed to the undersurface of the plate 260: at the edges of a V-shaped slot in the central portion of the plate 265:.
In Figure 6 is shown a paling top shaping element 24b including a plate 26a whose ends 28b and 38b are provided with apertures 36b and 38b for registering with the apertured flanges of member 10. A Z-shaped contour member 34b is fixed to the undersurfaces of the plate 26b at a V-shaped notch in the plate. The ends 35 are parallel to each other and will rest against the inner faces of the portions 12 and 14, so that the top end of the picket formed will be tapered.
The picket top shaping element 240 shown in Figure 7 includes a plate 26c having a U-shaped notch to which a U-shaped contour member 340 is fixed. This element will shape the top end of the picket with a straight upper horizontal edge and with inclined corners.
Figure 8 shows the picket top shaping element 24d including a top plate 26a having a central notch to whose edges are fixed a U-shaped contour member 34d having outwardly flared convex end portions 37, so that the top end of a picket formed will have a straight upper horizontal edge and concave upper corners meeting the straight edge.
The picket top shaping element 24c shown in Figure 9 also includes a top plate 26a having a central recess or notch to whose edges is fixed a smoothly curved concavoconvexed contour member 34c having outwardly flared ends 39 and parallel flanges 41. The element 24e will provide a convex top edge on a paling with concave end portions.
In Figure 10 is shown a picket top shaping element 24 that will form a rounded edge on a palingv Element 24 includes a top plate 26 having a concave recess to whose edges is fixed a concavo-convexed contour member 34 Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A concrete picket fence form comprising an elongated relatively shallow channel shaped member having a pair of spaced leg portions and a web portion joining said leg portions, an outturned flange on each of said leg portions, said flanges being coplanar with each other and parallel .to the web portions, said member having a top end and a bottom end, a transverse plate fixed within the member at the bottom end of the member and ex; tending transversely of the member, a paling top shaping element disposed within the top end of the member and having a substantially U-shaped strengthening member slidably received in said channel member, the sides of said U-shaped member slidably engaging said spaced leg portions, said U-shaped strengthening member having a web extending between said sides engaging said web portion of said channel shaped member, a contour member for forming the configuration of the top of a picket secured to said sides and web of said U-shaped strengthening element, said U-shaped member further including a top plate secured to and overlying said U-shaped strengthening member and said contour member, said top plate having a recess therein conforming to the shape of said contour member, said top plate having flat end portions overlying said flanges, each of said flanges having a plurality of longitudinally spaced apertures at the top end of the member, said end portions of said element each having an aperture for selectively registering with the apertures in said flanges, and fasteners extending through said apertures in said end portions and selected apertures in said flanges to retain the paling top shaping element spaced a predetermined distance from the plate to vary the length of the paling formed in the member.
2. A concrete picket fence form comprising an elongated relatively shallow channel shaped member having a pair of spaced leg portions and a web portion joining said leg portions, an outturned flange on each of said leg por tions, said flanges being coplanar with each other and parallel to the web portions, said member having a top end and a bottom end, a transverse plate fixed within the number at the bottom end of the members and extending transversely of the member, a paling top shaping element disposed within the top end of the member and having a substantially U-shaped strengthening member slidably received in said channel member, the sides of said U-shaped member slidably engaging said spaced leg portions, said U-shaped strengthening member having a web extending between said sides engaging said web portion of said channel shaped member, a contour member for forming the configuration of the top of a picket secured to said sides and web of said U-shaped strengthening element, said U-shaped member further including a top plate secured to and overlying said U-shaped strengthening member and said contour member, said top plate having a recess therein conforming to the shape of said contour member, said top plate having fiat end portions overlying said flanges, and interconnecting means between said end portions and said flanges for retaining the paling top shaping element longitudinally adjusted within the member.
