Description

Jan. 25, 1949. L. D. OBERT FENCE CONSTRUCTION Filed Nov. 16, 1945 WW/X Inventor Patented Jan. 25, 1949 FENCE CONSTRUCTION Leon Obert, Firemerton, Wash.
Application November 16, 1945, Serial No. 629,104
1 Claim. (01. 25624) The invention relates tofence construction and more especially to fencing having concealed or semi-concealed posts.
A primary object of the invention is the provision of a structure of this character wherein the fence in its entirety is neat in appearance at both sides thereof, as both sides appear exactly the same and the unsightly post and cumbersome framework of the ordinary fence are concealed and appear eliminated, the fence being adaptable particularly for use as a yard or lawn fence in cities and towns.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a fence of this character wherein the sections thereof are formed with male and female ends, this assembly being in reverse to that of the ordinary fence, which sections can be placed with post anchorage between the horizontal side bars and the pickets, while after fitting the first section, the other sections may be set and slipped together end to end with post anchorage.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a fence of this character, which is simple in construction, strong, durable, readily and easily set up and inexpensive to manufacture and install.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction and combination and arrangement of parts, as
will be hereinafter more fully described in detail,
and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation of a fence constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken approximately on a line 22 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective view showing in detail the assembly of picket sections of a fence.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing a slight modification of the fence.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken approximately on a line 55 of Figure 4 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary perspective view similar to Figure 3 showing the modification shown in Figure 4.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, particularly Figures 1 to 3, inclusive, the fence constituting the present invention in its preferred form comprises a, plurality of upstanding vertically disposed spaced pickets H] which rise from a ground sill I l and are held spaced vertical parallel relation by top. and bottom double runner rails l2 and i3, respectively, which are disposed in a horizontal plane parallel to each other and at opposite side faces of the said pickets, the latter being made secure thereto by suitable facteners such as nails 14 or otherwise.
Adapted to be driven into the ground or a foundation at selected intervals of each section of fence including a group of pickets l0, rails i 2 and i3, and a base sill l l, are perpendicular posts l5, which are located between a pair of adjacent pickets I0 and between the double rails 12 and [3 midway of the said sections and at one end thereof, which end has the rails l2 and 93 extendeed beyond the end of the section as indicated at l The posts l5 are passed through suitable aperture in the ground sill H for firm anchorage in the ground or foundation, as best seen in Figure 1 of the drawing. The picket at the other end of each section is located to partially extend edgewise beyond the rails l3 and. i4 so that the sections of fence as built in the manner before described can have tongue and groove interfitting with each other, as the protruding edge H of the picket just mentioned can interfit between the extensions iii of the rails l2 and 13 of the other section next thereto and in this manner the fencing is ex tended to any degree as may be required.
In Figures 4, 5 and 6 of the drawings, there is disclosed a slight modification of the invention wherein an intermediate picket i8 and the outermost picket N3 of a section of fence are provided with extensions 20 constituting the anchoring posts. Anchoring portions 2!] are driven into the ground and passed through suitable apertures as provided in the ground sill 2!.
The ground sill l i or 2H prevents the growth of grass between the pickets which is usually hard to cut out in the ordinary fence, and the posts supporting the fence in the manner as before described are thus semi-concealed, both sides of the fence appearing alike, thereby affording a neat and attractive appearance. The fence has a uniform thickness through the extent thereof and the upper ends of the pickets Hi can obviously be tipped in any manner desired.
It should be apparent that the sections of the fence with the pickets and side rails can be of any desired length and can be interfitted with each other at opposite ends thereof, the posts supporting these sections being devoid of nails or other securing means and since the posts do not require nailing, repair posts can be easily substituted in case of breakage.
From the foregoing it will now be seen that there is herein provided a device accomplishing all the objects of this invention, and others; including many advantages of great practical utility and commercial importance. 7
As many embodiments may be made of the inventive concept, and as many modifications may be made in the embodiment herein shown and described it is to be understood that. all: mat.- ter herein is to be interpreted merely as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What is claimed is:
A fence section comprising a unit including a plurality of vertically disposed parallel pickets, double top and bottom horizontally disposed rails fixed to opposite-sides: of said picketaextensions on. said rails extending. beyond. the: section atione E tion, said ground sill being coextensive with said 25 jaeent fence-section, a ground sill underlying and secured to the bottom of, each picket of said. secrails and anchoring means for securing said section in erected position comprising portions depending from certain of said pickets and extending throughsaid ground sill for insertion in the ground.
