Description

Oct. 18, 1955 R. L. DILLS 2,721,028
ARRANGEMENT FOR REDUCING CASE RESONANCE Filed April 5, 1954 I I /L JNVENTOR.
RAYMOND L. DILLS HIS ATTORN EY United States Patent Ofifice ARRANGEMENT FOR REDUCING CASE RESONANCE Raymond L. Dills, Erie, Pa., assignor to General Electric Company, a corporation of New York Application April 5, 1954, Serial No. 421,127 9 Claims. (Cl. 230232) This invention relates to hermetically sealed compressors and, more particularly, to an arrangement for damping case resonance of hermetically sealed internally spring mounted high speed compressors.
Hermetically sealed compressors are sometimes required to operate in locations where the noise level is low, and it is desirable to eliminate or minimize all noises produced by the normal operations of the compressors. High speed compressors produce more noise than low speed compressors of similar construction and the difference in the noise level between a high speed compressor and a low speed compressor may render the high speed compressor objectionable if the noise from the interior of the casing and the resonance of the casing are not reduced. The case resonance of the high speed compressor is due, in part, to the driven noise that comes through the compressor casing.
The present invention reduces the case resonance of a high speed compressor until it is not an objectionable factor and the present invention also reduces the driven noise that comes through the compressor casing.
A primary object of the present invention is to provide an arrangement for reducing the resonance of the casing of a hermetic compressor.
An object of the invention is to provide a sound deadening arrangement for a hermetic compressor that is inexpensive.
A further object of this invention is to provide an arrangement for deadening the sound that is transmitted through the casing of a high speed hermetic compressor due to the operation of the high speed compressor.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the following description proceeds and the features of novelty which characterize the invention will be pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed to and forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a hermetic compressor including a sealed casing. Resilient means are disposed on the outside of and engaging the casing to deaden sound from the casing. A metallic member is placed in contact with each resilient means to aid the resilient means in deadening sound. Suitable means are provided to hold the sound deadening means including both the resilient means and the metal member in contact with the casing with a predetermined elastic force.
For a better understanding of the invention reference may be had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. I is an elevational view of a casing of a hermetic compressor embodying the present invention; and
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken along the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown a casing 1 of a hermetic compressor. This casing is formed of two sections 2 and 3. The section 2 has a flange 4 extending completely around its periphery and the section 3 has a similar flange extending around its periphery. The casing is formed by permanently joining the flanges 4 and 5 together to form a sealed casing. Since the 2,721,028 Patented Oct. 18, 1955 particular contents of the casing 1 do not form a part of the present invention, the details of the parts within the casing 1 are not shown but it will be understood that there is disposed within the casing 1 a compressor and a motor for driving the compressor. The gas to be compressed enters the casing 1 through suction line 6 and the compressed gas leaves the casing through exhaust line 7. Suitable lines 16 and 17 extend through the section 3 of the casing 1 to permit the cooled lubricating oil to enter the casing and the hot lubricating oil to leave the casing.
Four resilient members 8 are disposed in contact with the exterior of the casing 1 across the center line C/L of the casing. These resilient members 8 are disposed above and below the flanges 4 and 5 of the compressor casing 1 as shown in Fig. 2. A metallic member 9 is placed in contact with each of the resilient members 8 (see Fig. 2) to aid the resilient member 8 in reducing the noise resulting from case resonance and the noise being transmitted from the interior of the casing. The
ber. The metallic members are preferably steel blocks or bars.
It will be observed that the metallic members 9 are of less width than the resilient members 8 but that the metallic members 9 have a greater depth than the resilient members 8. If desired, the metallic members may have one edge in contact with the flange 4 or the flange 5 of the While the member 8 has been designated as be understood that other suitable materials could be em- It will be understood that the term sound from the casing employed in the claims includes both the noise resulting from the resonance of the casing and noise transmitted from the interior of the casing.
While the present invention has been described by reference to a particular embodiment thereof, it will be understood that modifications may be made by those skilled in the art without actually departing from the invention. I, therefore, aim in the appended claims to cover all such variations as come within the true spirit and scope of the foregoing disclosure.
