ROBERT B. RUGGLES, OE WINDSOR, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO' JOHN P. COLLARE .AND` JULIUS M. LESTER, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
BEER-PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming lpart of Letters Patent No. 272,089, dated February 13, 1883.
Application led November 3, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT B. RUGGLES,
of Windsor, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Beer-Pumps, of which the following isa description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, where-'- Figure l is a i'ront view of my device, with 1o a short piece ot' the pipes attached. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a view in central longitudinalyseetion ofthe cylinder on liner/@mot Fig.1.' y
My invention relates to the class of devices I5 used for drawing ale, beer, and the likefrom barrels or casks from a point at a distance from and usually above the barrel, and it is .perhaps best described as a beer-pum p, although adapted for use with many other liq- 20 nids.`
The invention consists in the peculiar combination of an air-pump and a faucet with a connecting-lever, by which both are operated, and by means of which the pressure in the bar- 25 relusually reduced by drawing oft' its coiltents-is constantly maintained at any desired degree by the same movement ofthe hand that opens and closes the faucet.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter a 3o denotes a portion of a bar or counter, to the under side of which are secured the faucet b,
the air-pump c, and the lever-stand d. To this stand is pivoted a lever, e, having a suitable handle, c', at one end, and at the other a s hort slot, in which plays apivot,f, which is l'ast to 35 the outer end ot' crank g, appartenant to the plug 7L of the faucet. At a point on the lever between the fulcrum and the handle is pivoted the piston-rod t' of the piston j, which reciprocatesV in the cylinder of the air-pump. 4o This piston hears an ordinary flap-valve, 7c, which allows air to enter but not to leave the cylinder as the piston reciprocates.A
A pipe, l. leads from the air-pump to a barrel, into which air is forced as the pump is op- ,t3 erated, and another pipe, m, conveys the liquid from the barrel to the faucet by the pressure of the air in the barrel. The return of air in the pipe Z is prevented by a cheek-valve, l.
With the parts in theposition shown in the 5o drawings, the faucet is open, and, by moving the le'Ver to close the faucet, air is pumped into the barrel. This operation is repeated as successive portions of theliquid are withdrawn, and any desired pressure is maintained in the 55 barrel.
l claimA as my invention-f In combinaion, an airlpump,c, faucet b, and lever e, pivotally connected to the pump-piston and faucet-plug, whereby the pump and 6o faucet are simultaneously operated by a movement-ofthe lever, all substantially as. described, and for the purpose set forth.
