I \VILLIAM D. STRQWGER, OF STEAMBURG, NEW YORK, ASSIGNO'R OF ONE- HALF TO S. H. WALLACE, OF GARFIELD, PENNSYLVANIA.
; SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,945, dated February 6, 1883.
Application filed November 17, 1882. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. SrRoW- GER, of Steamburg, in the county of Oattaraugus and State of New-York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Bed-Bottoms and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it pertains to make and use it, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in spring bed-bottoms; and it consists in. the combination of strips formed of any textile fabric, suitable springs, which are secured to one of their ends with suitable cross-strips, which pass under the longitudinal strips, and which cross strips are also provided with springs upon their ends, all of which will be more fully described hereinafter.
The objectof my invention is to form a very cheap, soft, and elastic bed-bottom, which can be given any desired amount of tension.
Figure l is a plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
A represents a suitable rectangular frame, which is braced by the threecross-pieces, B, which are secured to the under sides of the side pieces, and the cross-piece G, which is secured upon the tops of the side pieces at one end. Secured against the end of the frame by means of suitable metallic straps, E, is the roller F, which is provided with a ratchet- Wheel, 0, upon one or both of its ends. Upon the top of the frame A are secured the flat springs H, which act as pawls to the ratchets for the purpose of holding the roller in any position in which it may be adjusted. To this roller are secured the strips I, of any suitable vfabric, and which straps have attached to their free ends suitable wire or other hooks, L, by means of which the coil or other springs, J, are attached to them. The springs, which may either be of the shape here shownv or any other that may be preferred, are provided with hooks 0r catches upon each of their ends, one of which catches in the hook upon the end of the strip, while the other-catches used, each one of which will be attached to the top of one of the side pieces, while its other endwiil have attached to it acoil-spring, as already described. These cross-strips are also made of any suitable fabric, and every length will be so proportioned as to bring any desired tension upon the springs attached to them.
A bed bottom constructed as above described will be found to be very soft, elastic, and cheap. Should any of the parts get out of order, they can readily be repaired without the help of a skilled mechanic.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a bed-bottom, the combination of the frame A, having the cross-piece 0, provided with the.projections O, the roller E, provided with ratchets and pawls, the strips 1, springs J, and hooks L, substantially as shown.
2. In a bed-bottom, the combination of the frame A, having the cross-piece 0, provided with the projections O, the springs J, hooks L, strips I, roller E, provided with pawl and ratchet, and the cross-strips '1, provided with springs, substantially as set forth.
In testimonywhereof I affix my signature in presence-of two witnesses.
