Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS B. DE Fonnsr, of New York city, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to certain improvements in the construction of lanterns, and hasfor its object a novel method of forming and combining the different parts to constitute a more durable simple and desirable apparatus than has heretofore been manufactured and to these ends my invention consists, in bending one single piece of wire so as to form two of the vertical guards of the lantern as will be hereinafter explained. And my invention further consists in ex tending up through the top cap of the lantern the central bent portion of one of the wires, which forms two guards, in such a manner as to constitute a suitable device for the attachment of the handle of the appa' ratus, as will be fully explained hereinafter. And my invention further consists in extending one of the wires forming the vertical guards up through the top cap sufliciently far and in a suitable manner to support the deflector cap, in combination with the extended guard wire (which forms the link for attaching the handle) for retaining laterally said deflector as will be hereinafter described. And my invention further consists in a novel method of forming the handles of lanterns.
To enable those skilled to make and use my improvements I will proceed to describe them.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this application Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of a lantern embracing my improvements. Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8, illustrate detail parts of the same. Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 9 represent certain views of lantern to which certain features of my present invention are applicable and will be alluded to hereinafter, and Fig. 10, is a detail view of my improved construction of handle.
In Figs. 1, 5, 6, 7 and 8, the same parts of the apparatus are denoted by the same letters of reference, and the immediately 27,186, dated February 14, 1860.
following description alludes only to said figures in which A, represents the glass of the lantern; B, the base piece or bottom; C, the extreme top cap; G, the lower glass retainer; (Z, the upper glass retainer and deflector; a, the vertical guard wires; b, the horizontal encircling guard wire; 0, the pro tector, and D, the handle. 2' represents the loops or wire bands by which the vertical guards are secured in position on the top piece d, and f is the wrapping wire which holds on the lower ends of the vertical guards a.
The lower retainer or metallic cap 9 is turned or rounded over at its upper edge to form a suitable seat for the lower bead a of the glass A, and is secured by bolts h to the base or bottom piece B. Near the lower edge-of the piece g, are made a series of holes for the reception of the bent ends a of the guard wires a, which are retained in said holes, and secured to the lower portion of the lantern by being wound around with wrapping wire a are eyes formed in the vertical guards for the accommodation of the encircling guard wire I), the operation and objects of which arrangement of the wire I), with the eyes a, is fully explained in another application made simultaneously with this of which it forms a part of the subject.
The wires a, are so bent or shaped as to conform to the sectional form of the deflector case d, and extend over its top to near its opening or aperture (Z and are fastened to top of piece d by loop wires or wrappers lacing them to it as seen at 2' (Figs. 1 and 5).
The cap C is formed with a series of internal depressions or indentations 0 (see Figs. 7 and 8,) to accommodate the wires A at that part where said cap C surrounds them and comes incontact with them. By this means it will be seen the wires A, after being secured at i, are all firmly braced and maintained in their proper relative positions (by placing over the whole the cap C) One of guard wires a is so formed as to have its central portion extend up through and protrude sufiiciently far above the top of cap C (in a U shape as seen at a) as to allow of the attachment thereto directly the handle D, the said U shaped extension being received in the loop 0 of said handle D. Another one of the guard wires (1 is extended 1 ing the handle of a piece of sheetmetal,
cut in" the form illustrated and its curved sides rolledover as shown said handle as an entirety, is made to embrace the following advantages over the ordinary constructions of handles viz: a size and form, at that portion whichyisgrasped by the hand which is comfortable, such. shape near its connected ends as rendersthe securing together of said ends-simple and their coupling effective and a neat and finished appearance.
' It will be seen by reference to Figs. 2, 3 and 4 (which illustrate sectional views of modifications of my improvements forming the subject of my other application) showing constructions in which my improved connecting link is employed, that my im proved handle as herein described is equally applicable where a connecting link 6 or d (see Figs. 2 and 4) is employed,-and,also that the device formed by the extension of two of the guard wires 41 '(formed in one piece) as'described and made a part of the subject of this application, constitutes as effectual a method for effecting the support and retention of the protector and the attachment of the handle as the improved link made the subject of my other application or as any of the known contrivances for the same purpose which it is more simple and economical than any of them. The general principle of invention which covers the idea of so forming and combining the parts of the lantern as to form the whole apparatus without soldering or-riveting has been fully explained in my other application and need be only alluded to here.
What I claim in this application as new and useful improvements and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. Forming out of a single piece of wire, two of the vertical guard wires substantially as herein set forth.'
2. I alsoclaim bending the double guard piece of'wire'a into such shape as to form the connecting link for the attachment of the handle as hereinbefore specified.
' 3; I also claim forming the support for the protector 0 out of one of the double guard wires as shown and described in combination'with the retaining portion of the other' extended wire as hereinbefore set 'forth. 4
