Description
Sept. 20, 1955 J. JARON SHIPPING AND DISPLAY CONTAINER Filed April '9, 1953 FIGS 35 T I 30 I 34 v 24 INVENTOR.
i Q BY ATTORNEY United States Patent O SHIPPING AND DISPLAY CONTAINER Julian Jaron, Providence, R. I.
Application April 9, 1953, Serial No. 347,669
3 Claims. (Cl. 206-80) The present invention relates to shipping and display containers, and has particular reference to a novel construction for shipping and displaying jewelry.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a shipping and display container for advantageously displaying small articles such as jewelry items.
Another object of the invention is to provide a'shipping and display container which detachably holds a number of mounting cards on which the jewelry items are mounted.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive shadow box container for displaying jewelry items.
With the above and other objects and advantageous features, the invention consists of a novel arrangement of parts more fully disclosed in the detailed description following in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, and more specifically defined in the claims appended thereto.
In the drawings,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an illustrative embodiment of the invention, of a size and shape to display an assortment of earrings;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of Fig. 1 on the line 22 thereof;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a blank for the display base, partly broken away;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of a blank for the container support plate;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of an illustrative mounting card; and
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view of a modified construction of the display base blank, partly broken away.
It has been found desirable to provide a simple inexpensive shipping and display container for small articles such as jewelry items, of the shadow box type, whereby the articles are displayed to best advantage, the articles being preferably mounted on cards which are detachably secured to the container, whereby any article is readily removed for sale and is readily replaced. To this end, I provide a frame which is stamped out of sheet material, such as cardboard or plastic, and I secure a display sheet to the frame, the display sheet being indented or spaced in relation to the frame to provide a shadow box effect. I secure a support stand to the back of the display sheet for holding the container in upright position, and I provide securing devices on the display sheet to detachably receive one or more mounting cards on which small articles are mounted, whereby the articles are advantageously displayed, and are readily removed with their mounting cards when sold, and replaced by other articles.
Referring to the drawings, the novel shipping and display container 10 includes a frame 11, a display sheet 12, and a stand 13 secured to the rear of the display sheet and adjustable to a position at right angles to the display sheet to maintain the container in vertical position.
The frame 11 has a central cut-out 14, illustrated as "ice of rectangular shape, and the display sheet 12 is formed from a blank 15, see Fig. 3, with elongated upper strips 16, 17, which are indented for folding as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the strip 16 and the lower section 18 of the central display portion 19 being cemented or otherwise respectively secured to the rear surfaces of the holding fingers 22 and intermediate holding tabs 23, the
When the articles to be displayed are earrings and the like which have rearwardly extending or projecting parts, it is preferred to equip the cards with openings 25, 26 to receive the earring parts, and to provide cut-outs 27 on the display sheet, thus bringing the articles being displayed into substantially the plane of the displayed sheet.
The stand 13 is preferably formed from a blank 28 of cardboard or the like, which has bending folds indicated in dotted lines, to provide strips 29 which are secured, as by cementing, to the rear of the display sheet, the lower edge 30 of the stand being inclined so that the container inclines rearwardly, see Fig. 2, when the stand is folded in container supporting position. The stand has a V-cut 31 and base cuts 32, 33, whereby an abutment shoulder 34 is provided to receive the V-shaped cut of a bent-down lock finger 35.
The above described embodiment of the invention creates a shadow box display for the carded articles. If desired, the display sheet blank may be modified as shown in Fig. 6, the blank being designated 36 and having a triangular end tab 37 at each end, with bending folds as shown in dotted lines, to also enclose the display sheet on the sides when mounted on the frame. The strip which forms the top of the display sheet may be formed as indicated at 38 in Fig. 6, with an elongated light entry slot 39, which may be covered over by a transparent colored closure strip 40 of plastic or the like, whereby a colored display effect results.
The color of the display sheet, the size and spacing of the holding tabs, and the use of colored light entry slots, may be varied in accordance with the type and the size and shape of the articles being displayed, without departing from the spirit and the scope of the invention as defined in the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1. In a shipping and display container, a frame having a cut-out opening, a display sheet secured to said frame, said display sheet having a central display portion, a lower edge portion, and a top and an intermediate upper elongated strip, said lower edge being secured to the rear surface of the lower edge of the frame, the top upper elongated strip being secured to the upper edge of the frame and the intermediate upper elongated strip extending rearwardly of the frame, whereby said display portion is encased Within said frame and extends inwardly at an angle from the intermediate upper elongated strip to the lower edge portion, said display portion having a plurality of spaced openings and aligned slits above and below each opening providing tabs whereby a display card may be mounted against the display portion closing each opening and with its upper and lower edges seated within the slits.
2. In a shipping and display container, a frame having a cut-out opening, a display sheet secured to said frame, said display sheet having a central display portion, a lower edge portion, and a top and an intermediate upper elongated strip, said lower edge being secured to the rear surface of the lower edge of the frame, the top upper elongated strip being secured to the upper edge of the frame and the intermediate upper elongated strip extending rearwardly of the frame whereby said display portion is encased within said frame and extends inwardly at an angle from the intermediate upper elongated strip to the lower edge portion, said display portion having a I plurality of spaced openings and aligned slits above and below each opening providing tabs whereby a display card may be mounted against the display portion closing each opening and with its upper and lower edges seated within the slits, said intermediate upper elongated strip including a slot whereby light from above is directed through the slot and against the angled display portion.
3. In a shipping and display container, a frame having a cut-out opening, a display sheet secured to said frame, said display sheet having a central display portion, a lower edge portion, two triangular end tabs, and a top and an intermediate upper elongated strip, said lower edge being secured to the rear surface of the lower edge of the frame, the top upper elongated strip being secured to the upper edge of the frame and the intermediate upper elongated strip extending rearwardly of the frame, whereby said display portion is encased within said frame and extends inwardly at an angle from the intermediate upper elongated strip to the lower edge portion, said display portion having a plurality of spaced openings and aligned slits above and below each opening providing tabs, whereby a display card may be mounted against the display portion closing each opening and with its upper and lower edges seated within the slits, said intermediate upper elongated strip including a slot whereby light from above is directed through the slot and against the angled display portion, said end tabs extending inwardly towards the frame whereby the light against the display portion is concentrated thereupon.
