1 Claim. (Cl. 30-16) This invention relates to a can opener.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a can opener which is operated by pushing it downwardly toward the can to be opened.
Another object of this invention is to provide a new can opener which cuts a half-round hole in the end cover of a can.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the specification proceeds and the novel features of the device will be particularly pointed out in the claim hereto annexed.
In this specification and the annexed drawing, the in vention is illustrated in the form considered to be the best but it is understood, that the invention is not limited to such form; and it is also to be understood that in and by the claim following the description, it is desired to cover the invention in whatsoever form it may be embodied.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of specification, in which:
Fig. 1 is a top view of the can opener constructed in accordance with the teachings of this invention.
Fig. 1-A is an end view of said can opener looking in the direction of an arrow A.
Fig. 2 is aside View of said can opener.
Fig. 3 illustrates how said can opener is used; and
Fig. 4 is a plan view of a portion of a can showing the hole punched by said can opener.
In detail my can opener comprises a flat comparatively narrow piece 1 made of metal, preferably steel. One end 2 of said piece is slightly bent downwardly, and the other end 3 has a cutter 4 punched out of said piece. The cutter 4 has a sharp point 6, and rounded sides 7, and is bent downwardly at an angle of about 45 in relaice tion to the piece 1 as shown in Fig. 2. The sharp point 6 is also bent at an angle of about 45 to the body of the cutter so as to meet the cover 10 of a can 11 at an angle of about 45 The end 3 of the piece 1 is slightly rounded and has a comparatively narrow hook 14 with a sharp end 15 depending from the edge 16 of said end. The hook 14 is designed to be placed under a bead 17 connecting a cover 10 with the body 19 of a can 11, for the purpose of providing leverage necessary in order to punch a hole in the cover 10.
The can opener is operated as shown in Fig. 3. The hook 14 is placed under the head 17 so that the cutter 4 rests on the cover 10 and the can opener extends over the can 11. Thereupon the end 2 of the can opener is pressed downwardly. The downwardly curved end 2 facilitates such pressure. The sharp point 6 cuts through the cover 10 first and then the sides 7 cut a half-round hole 20. The downward motion of the cutter 4 bends downwardly a cut portion 21 of the cover 10.
I claim:
A can opener comprising a flat comparatively narrow metal strip having one end thereof curved downwardly slightly which end acts as a handle; a short flat cutter punched out of said strip near the other end thereof, said cutter being bent downwardly at an angle of about 45 and inclined toward the one end of said strip; said cutter having a substantially half-round body and a sharp triangular point at its apex bent at an angle to the body of said cutter to meet the top of a can at an angle of about 45 when said can opener engages a can for punching a hole in the top of the same; and a hook curved downwardly and toward the one end for engaging the edge of said can while the one end is pressed downwardly to cut a rounded hole in the top of the can.
