Description

COOLING SYSTEM FOR VEHICLE ENGINES Filed March 29, 1951 INVENTOR FRIEDRICH K H- IVALLZWGER ATTIHUVEYS United States Patent 0 COOLING SYSTEM non VEHICLE ENGINES Friedrich K. H. Nallinger, Stuttgart, Germany, assignor to Daimler-Benz Aktiengesellschaft, Stuttgart-Unterturkheim, Germany Appiicafion March 29, 1951, Serial No. 218,133 In Germany February 4, 1950 Public Law 619, August 23, 1954 Patent expires February 4, 1970 7 Claims. (Cl. 237-123) The present invention refers to a cooling system for vehicle engines, and more particularly to motor vehicle engines, utilizing steam cooling, in which the cooling liquid, which is in the cooling jacket of the combustion engine, and which is particularly under pressure, is heated normally close to boiling temperature, and in which the steam, which is formed upon relieving, is emitted or separated from the cooling liquid and is conveyed back to the liquid cycle preferably upon condensation.
It is an object of the present invention to render such a cooling system particularly economical. For this purpose, particularly the steam, which is emitted from the cooling liquid, is conveyed to a heating device.
A further object of the present invention is concerned with suitably regulating the heating device.
A further object of the present invention is to provide n a construction of the cooling system, which is as simple as possible, particularly by utilizing a cooling liquid pump, which serves simultaneously for the emission of steam.
It is another object of the present invention to increase the economy of the cooling system by placing the liquid in the cooling system of the engine under pressure.
A further object of the present invention is furthermore concerned with such an arrangement of the steam drum and of the condenser that the steam can condense as quickly and completely as possible.
In the single view drawing there is shown a sketch of a cooling system in accordance with the present invention.
The conduit b leads from the engine a to the circulating pump 0, which is constructed as a centrifugal pump, and a conduit d leads back from the pump to the engine. The cooling liquid, for example cooling water, is under relatively high pressure forced into the cooling jacket of the engine, which cooling jacket is closed on all sides, where it is heated close to the boiling temperature, which corresponds to the existing overpressure.
The cooling liquid, which enters the pump 0 through the conduit 12, is centrifuged to the outside by the pump 0, while the steam remains in the center of the pump and is emitted at e in the middle of the axis of same and guided into the conduit 1. The conduit 1 leads to a heat exchanger g, for example, to a heater for heating the vehicle, in which the heat of the steam is radiated to the heating medium of the vehicle, for example fresh air. From the heat exchanger g the conduit h leads, for example through the upper part of a sump i, to the condenser k. A conduit l guides the condensation water from the condenser it back to the sump i, which, if so desired, can also be united with the condenser as one unit. Through a further conduit m with a conveyer pump n the cooling liquid is pumped from the container 1' into the conduit b, or conveyed back to the pump c, suitably under a small overpressure and discharged axially into the pump c, for example, by means of a nozzle 0, which discharges axially into the pump. Furthermore, provision can be made for a short-circuit line p, which permits, for example, during summertime to switch off the heat exchanger g or the heater by means of change-over cock q.
