1 Claim. (Cl. 56--112) This invention relates to corn harvesters and particularly to that type commonly known as corn pickers in which one roll is adjustable relative to the other roll.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, effective means for getting the rolls far enough apart or close enough together to pick the corn under varying conditions of field use, and such further objects, advantages, and capabilities as will hereafter appear and as are inherent in the construction disclosed herein. My invention further resides in the combination, construction, and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings and, while I have shown therein what is now regarded as the preferred embodiment of this invention and a modification thereof, I desire the same to be understood as illustrative only i and not to be interpreted in a limiting sense.

A pair of picker or snapping rolls 1 and 2 of a corn picker is shown, particularly in Fig. 4. Ordinarily more than one pair of such rolls is used, and the operating means therefor is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The roll 1 is fixed in position but the roll 2 is adjustable. Secured to roll 2 is the shaft 3 which is adjustable back-and-forth bv a screw-threaded means or bolt 4 reacting with the correspondingly screw-threaded sleeve 5 which may be turned by a handle or crank 6.
The shaft 3, as it is adjusted by the crank 6 and the screw-threaded sleeve 5, changes its position and has a somewhat elongated opening where it passes through the sheet metal plate 7 of the picker. The crank 6 has its f ee end bent over, as shown at 8, and is provided with a spring 9 for forcing the latching means, which is a spring-pressed plunger or latch 10, into engagement with the opening 11 in the sheet metal plate 7. A plate 12 is recessed on its rear side, and this receives a nut 13 which has a flange 1312, which is part of the screwthreaded sleeve 5, and is held to the sheet metal plate 7 by the plate 12, being bolted to the sheet metal plate 7. The rim 19 is secured to the sheet metal plate 7 by the bolts 12a.
In using this device, the spring-pressed plunger is 2,714,794 Patented Aug. 9, 1955 withdrawn, and then the handle or crank 6 is turned around until the proper spacing of rolls 1 and 2 is obtained, when the spring-pressed plunger or latch 10 is allowed to reseat in the opening 11. Preferably this opening 11 is elongated to accommodate the different positions of the spring-pressed plunger or latch 10.
Instead of the handle or crank 6, a shaft 14 may be used to adjust the roller 2. A pliable piece of rubber hose 15 may be inserted in the interrupted shaft 14 to take the place of a universal joint, because of the bend in the course of the shaft or rod 14. On the shaft 14 is a bevel gear 16 cooperating with a gear 17 on the screw-threaded sleeve 5. A nut 13 is hidden behind the plate 12, within the rim 19, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, and the screw-threaded sleeve 5 is advanced or retracted on the screw-threaded means 4. The gear 17 is connected to the screw-threaded sleeve 5, as in the case of the previously described embodiment of this invention. The gears 16 and 17 are held in engagement by the angle bracket 18, as shown in Fig. 5.
A modified form of the handle or crank 6 is shown at 6a in Fig. 6, in which a pipe has a nut 13a welded to the inner end of the pipe which is bent at 19. By reason of the welded construction, the nut 13a and crank 6a act as a unit. It will be understood that the nut 13a is received under the plate 12, and the crank turns as a unit. A grease fitting 20 is provided.
It is believed that the operation of the three forms of this invention, herein described, Will be well understood. In each form there is a screw-threaded member turned by the handles or cranks 6 and 6a, or by the shaft 14, and this is turned on the screw-threaded means 4, which may be referred to as a bolt, and this results in the roll 2 being adjusted.
In this application, the picker or snapping rolls are sometimes referred to simply as rolls, as in the preceding sentence, but it will be understood that this does not mean husking rolls.
It is of course understood that the specific description of structure set forth above may be departed from with out departing from the spirit of this invention as disclosed in this specification and as defined by the appended claim.
Having now described my invention, 1 claim:
in a corn picker having both a fixed and a movable roll arranged as a cooperating pair, a screw afiixed to said movable roll and being non-rotatable in relation thereto, a sleeve having a screw-threaded connection with said screw, a bevel gear secured to said sleeve for turning the sleeve, a second bevel gear meshing with the first bevel gear, an interrupted shaft on which the second bevel gear is mounted for turning the first bevel gear and the sleeve, and a plate surrounding the sleeve and secured to a fixed metal plate the sleeve having a flange and the first named plate being recessed on the side toward the flange, the first named plate being provided with a rim surrounding the flange of the sleeve, said rim being secured to the fixed metal plate to hold the sleeve fixed but rotatable to that part of the corn picker to which the metal plate is fixed, as the sleeve moves the screw.
