ve/Z257 GAS HEATERS E. J. SCHNEITER Filed April 6, 1955 July 19, 1955 NNI United States Patent O The invention relates to gas heated boilers or heaters.
One object of the invention is to provide simple and eilicient means for transferring heat from a gas burner to a boiler containing liquid and expediting the increase in temperature of the liquid.
Another object of the invention is to provide a heater e which produces combustion without producing condensation or carbon on the heating surfaces of the ues.
Other objects will appear from the detailed description. The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.

The invention is exemplified in an apparatus which comprises a cylindrical casing or receptacle which is provided with heads 11 and 12 at its ends. A pipe 13 connected to head 11 conducts water to be heated from a suitable supply to the chamber 14 in the casing 10. A pipe 15 conducts the heated water or steam to its place of use. The casing 10 is stationarily supported by pipe 13 and a stationary tube 16 which is connected to head 12, or in any other suitable manner.
A burner pipe 17 is stationarily supported by brackets 20 under the center of, and in fixed relation to, the casing, and extends longitudinally of the casing. A supply pipe 18 delivers fuel gas to a mixer 19 in which air for combustion is combined with the gas to produce a combustible gaseous fuel. The upper portion of the burner pipe 17 is provided with staggered rows of holes 21 from which individual jets of combustible mixture are directed upwardly for producing combustion and ames under the receptacle.
A longitudinal series of plates 23 are in fixed relation to the bottom of the casing. Each plate 23 is arcuate in cross section, has its middle portion spaced a predetermined distance from the outer face of the receptacle casing to form a flue 24 of arcuate cross section between the the plate and the casing. Each plate 23 has its sides 25 conforming to and welded as at 25 to the outer face of the casing 1t) and has its end spaced from the casing to provide outlets from the ues. The ends of the plates 23 are spaced apart longitudinally of one another to provide open ends for the escape of combustion products from the ues 24. Angular baies 28 extend continuously from end to end of the casing and include flanges 27 which are welded thereto. The central portions of plates 23 are provided substantially from end to end with staggered rows of holes 29 which are upwardly convergent or inclined edges 29 to direct the arnes upwardly into the ues 24 and also to increase the areas of the plates 23 which are contacted by the llames.
The operation is as follows: Combustion will occur as the gaseous fuel emerges in jets from holes 21 in the ICS burner pipe 17. These jets will produce flames under the plates 24. The ames will impinge against the bevelled edges 29' of perforations 29 in plates 23 and extend through said perforations into the ilues 24 and into close proximity to the bottom of the casing which forms the top of said iiues. The heat is concentrated in the ilue and under the central portion of the bottom of the receptacle. The arcuate cross sectional shape of plates 23 forms ues 24 which have gradually reduced height from their transverse center to their sides which are closed by side margins for concentrating the heat under the lower zone of the casing, and combustion is completed for eicient heat transfer through the bottom of the casing to the liquid in the casing over the plates 23. This will condense any moisture in the combustion Zone and prevent the formation of carbon on the surfaces of the flues. 'I'he combustion products will travel longitudinally under the casing in ilues 24, escape through the open ends of the lines 24, then contact the bottom of the casing between plates 23 and flow transversely of the casing until interrupted by baiiles 2S. The baffles will receive residual heat from the combustion products and transfer it through welded ange 27 to the casing before it is deflected away from the casing.
In this operation, the fuel is fully consumed, the heat is concenrtated so it will be eticiently transferred to the bottom of the casing, no condensate accumulates in the iiues 29, and the formation of carbon on the heated surfaces is prevented. The apparatus is simple in construction and has a high elislciency in heat transfer to the liquid in the boiler.
The invention is not to be understood as limited to the details described, since these may be modied within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
i. In a heater for a fluid, the combination with a cylindrical receptacle and a burnerpipe under the receptacle and provided with openings for delivering a gaseous fuel for combustion under the bottom of the receptacle, of a series of plates spaced apart longitudinally on the lower portion of the receptacle, each having side margins joined to said bottom and intermediate portions spaced from said bottom to form open ended flues with closed sides, and provided with perforations over the burner-pipe, the burner-pipe being spaced below the plate for discharging jets of fuel which produce llames which are directed to the edges of the perforations in the plates and into the ue, the discharge of combustion products being through the openings between the ends of the ues, and longitudinal baiiies secured on the receptacle positioned to interrupt the ow of gases from the openings between the liues for extracting heat from the gases and transmitting this heat to the receptacle.
2. In a heater for a fluid, the combination with a cylindrical receptacle and a burner-pipe under the receptacle and provided with openings for delivering a gaseous fuel for combustion under the bottom of the receptacle, of a series of plates spaced apart longitudinally on the lower portion of the receptacle, each having side margins joined to said bottom and intermediate portions spaced from said bottom to form open ended llues with closed sides and provided with perforations over the burner-pipe, the burner-pipe being spaced below the plate for discharging jets of fuel which produce ames which are directed to the edges of the perforations in the plates and into the flue, the discharge of combustion products being through the openings between the ends of the flues, and continuous longitudinal bafles secured on the receptacle positioned to interrupt the flow of gases from the openings between Y 3 the'ues for extracting heat from the gases and transmittingrthis heat to the receptacle. v
3. In a heater the combination with a receptacle for a uid to be heated, having a cylindrical bottom, and a burner pipe providedrwith openings for delivering gaseous fuel for combustion under and longitudinally of said botitfn, of a series of plates having central portions provided with perforations along and over said pipe for the ow of gases to said bottom, sides joined to said bottom, and imperforate portions between said sides and said perfora tions,`for confining the gases transversely under said bottorn, the plates being spaced'apart longitudinally to form utransverse spaces between them,.and forming with said bottoni, Vlines through which the combustion gases are `cnned Vto flow longitudinally along and under said bottions and convergent with said bottom, for confining lthe `gases transversely under said bottom, the plates being vspaced apart longitudinally to form transverse spaces between them, and forming with said bottom, ilues through which the combustion gases are contined to ilow longitudinally along and under said bottom and transversely between the plates.
5. in a heater the combination with a receptacle for a tiuid to be heated, having a cylindrical bottom, and a burner pipe provided with openings for delivering gaseous fuel for combustion under andlongitudinally of said bottom, of a series of plates having central portions provided with upwardly tapered perforations along and over said pipe for the Yflow of gases to said bottom, sides joined to said bottom, and imperforate portions between said sides and said perforations, for confining the gases transversely under said bottom, the plates being spaced apart'longitudinally to form transverse spaces between them, and
