Description

E. CAHOW WATER HEATER Jan. 28, 1930.
Filed oet. 10, 1927 \NVENTOR Patented Jan. 28, 19:30
UNITED STATES ERVIN CAHOW, F HLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA WATER HEATER Application led October 10, 1927.
This invention relates to improvements in Water heaters.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved water heater which is of cheap,
simple and durable construction, and which has its parts so arranged as to be very efficient in transferring heat from a heating element to the water to be heated.
Another object of the invention is to provide a water heater which will occupy a minimum amount of space.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will be made manifest in the following detailed description and specifically pointed out in the appended claim, reference is had to the accompanying drawings for an illustrative embodiment of the invention, wherein:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section through the improved water heater.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken upon the line 2 2 upon Figure 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken upon the line 3-3 upon Figure 1.
Referring to the accompanying drawings wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout, the improved water heater consists of a storage tank or range boiler 10 having a supply pipe 11 lead- 3o ing thereto which supplies cold water to the heater. The supply pipe 11 extends into the storage tank 10 from the top and extends downwardly to a point adjacent its bottom. The lower end of the supply pipe 11 is preferably slotted or perforated as indicated at 12. On the opposite end of the storage tank 10 from the supply pipe 11 there is an outlet pipe 13 connected to the top of the storage tank and which conveys hot water from the water heater to the hot water system. Arranged below the storage tank 10 and parallel thereto, there are two tubes 14 and 15, the smaller tube 15 being arranged within the outer tube 14;. The inner tube 15 has its ends open and flared as indicated at 16 so that they will lit within the ends of the outer tube 14. The ends of the two tubes are preferably brazed or otherwise secured to each other, thus forming a closed annular water space between the tubes indicated at 17. One end Serial No. 225,236.
of the water space 17 is connected by means of a pipe 18 to the storage tank 10, and this pipe is preferably so arranged that its inlet is vertically beneath and in alignment with the supply pipe 11. The opposite end of the water space 17 is connected by means of a pipe 19 to the storage tank 10, which pipe extends upwardly into the storage tank beneath the outlet pipe 13. The pipe 19 preferably has that portion which is within the storage tank perforated or slotted as indicated at 20. Into one end of the horizontal tube 15 there eX- tends a heating elementindicated at 21. This heating element may be of any preferred construction, and in the drawing is shown as being a gas burner controlled by means of a gas cock 22. The burner consists of an elongated pipe 23 having a plurality of jets 24 mounted thereon which discharge the Hame downwardly against thevinterior of the horizontal tube 15. By virtue of the fact that the tube 15 is open at its ends, it acts as a iiue, with the flue gases flowing through the tube 15 from the burner and to the opposite end which may be connected to a gas vent or stack. Suitable baliies 25 are arranged within 'the tube 15, causing the flue gases to iow from side to side or from top to bottom of thetube 15. In the annular water space 17 there is preferably arranged one or more baiiies 26 which tend to cause the hot water at the end of the annular water space 17 to flow to the bottom of the water space as it passes longitudinally between the tubes. The baffle 26 as clearly shown in Figure 2,V extends only across the upper half of the water space.
The operation of the improved water heater is as follows: I
Water is supplied to the storage tank 10 through the supply pipe 11, and cold water enters the annular water space 17 at one end through` the pipe 18. As this water starts flowing through the water space 17 it is heated by the iue gases which are just passing out of the tube 15. As the water approaches the burner it becomes heated further, and to prevent the hot water all coll-ecting in the top of the water space 17, the baille 26 directs the hot water to the bottom. As the water then passes through the water space 17 around the burner 21, it receives additional heat and then Hows through the pipe 19 to the interior of the storage tank 10 from which it may be Withdrawn through the outlet pipe 13. Circulation is permissible in the improved Wat/er heater, as hot water discharged into the storage tank through the pipe 19 and becoming cooled therein, may again enter the heating apparatus through pipe 18. It Will be noted that in the improved Water heater, that the water is flowing in one direction and that the flue gases are flowing in the opposite direction, causing a maximum heat transfer. Furthermore, by virture of the fact that the tubes 14 and 15 are horizontally arranged, the flue gases will not pass in an extremely quick manner out of the inner tube 15, but will tend to linger therein and to gradually pass out of the tube 15 after all of the heat from these gases has been transferred to the Water. It will also be noted by virtue of the fact that the tubes are under the storage tank 10, that heat radiated' from the outer tube 14 will be caught to a large extent by the storage tank 10 so that there is a minimum of heat loss in the improved water heater.
Various changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined by the appended claim.
I claim:
A Water heater comprising a storage tank, two tubes arranged one Within the other in 'an approximately horizontal posit-ion beneath the storage tank providing a Water space therebetween, the inner tube providing a Hue the inlet of which is adjacent oner end 'and the outlet of which is adjacent the other end, a burner extending into the inner tube from its inlet end and arranged to direct flame against the bottom of the inner tube, means connecting the Water'space'between the tubes adjacent the outlet end of the flue to the storage tank adjacent its bottom, a pipe connecting the Water space adjacent the inlet end of the flue to the storage tank and extending up into the storage tank a material distance above its bottom, and means providing a baille in the water space adjacent yits top so that Water flowing through the water Vspace'vvill encounter theballle'before reaching that end of the Water space near the inlet end of the flue yand caused. to flownear the bottom of the water space toward which the flame from the burner is directed.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
