UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STEPHEN BARNWELL TBESOOT, OF PENDLETON, SOUTH CAROLINA, AS- SIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ELIZA N. TRESOOT, OF SAME PLACE.
\NIN'T'ER-COVERING FOR DOOR-STEPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,205, dated January 23, 1883,
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, STEPHEN BARNWELL TRESOOT, of Pendleton, in the county of Anderson and State of South Carolina, have invented a new and useful Improvement in VVinter-Ooverings for Door-Steps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention is an improvement in the class of coverings for door-steps which may be readily applied to and removed therefrom and are jointed, to adapt them to be folded, so that they'will occupy a small space when not required for use.
The improvement consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and specificallyindicatedin the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of stone steps having my improved covering applied. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, including a portion of the wall of a building. Fig. 3 is an end view of the step-covering folded. Fig. 4 is an end view of a section of the step-covering, showing the position of the links when the covering ,is in use.
The letter A indicates the boards or planks covering the horizontal surface of the steps X; B, the bars to which said planks are attached, and U the links, which are jointed to and connect the keepers, as shown. Each plank A is secured to two bars, one of which is placed near an end of the plank and arranged transversely beneath it. The means of attachment are screw-bolts a,whoselower ends are pointed to adapt them to enter the surface of the steps X, and thusprevent the Wooden covering becoming displaced while in use. The rear or inner ends of the bars B are bent upward, and the links 0 connect them to the bars of the plank applied to the step next above. 7
When not required for use, the step-covering is folded, as indicated in Fig. 3, one plank A upon or beneath another, and the bars B and links 0 between them, the links being provided with sockets or cavities to receive the pointed ends of the bolts to, as shown. The links may, however, be offset at the joint sufficiently to allow them to fold alongside instead of beneath the bars B,so that the whole device will be folded more compactlly.
In place of plain bars B, I may employ sockets orkeepers adapted to receive the whole or sockets, as specified, and the links 0, which are jointed to the bars, substantially as shown and described.
S. BARNWELL TRESGOT.
