UNITED STATES PATENT .OFFICE.
XVILLIAM E. SPARKS, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO P. & F. CORBIN, OF SAME PLACE. I
FASTENER FOR THE MEETING-RAILS OF SASHE'S.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 270,993, dated January 23, 1883.
Application filed September 15, 1882. (No model.)
'sash-fasteners in which the outer end of the sweep is provided with laterally projecting shoulders, is hinged to the main portion of the sweep, and when brought to the front falls into a notch in a vertical flange, so that the shoultiers of the hinged sweep bear upon the front of the flange by the sides of the notch therein and enable the sashes to be drawn together by depressing the outer end of the hinged sweep. Such a sash-fastener is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l is a plan view thereof, and Fig. 2 a side elevation of the same.
The sweep A is pivoted to the plate B on a vertical axis in any ordinary manner. The keeper-plate C is provided with a vertical flange, .a, which I' prefer to make the highest in the middle and inclined gradually toward each end. Said flange is also provided with a notch large enough to receive the neck of the outer end or handle, 1;, of the sweep. Said outer end or handle, b, is hinged to the body of the sweep by pintle c. The outer end or handle, b, has two laterally-projecting shoulders, dd, for engagement with the front side of the vertical I flange a, which flange is slightly beveled off or and the sweep is swung around to the right,
when a slight projection on the under side of b will fall into the notch f and hold the sweep in that position. If the sweep is free to be swungin either direction, a like notch for the same purpose may also be formed in the other end of the plate B.
In order to lock the sash, the outer end or handle, I), is raised a little, then swung around over the keeper, where it will ride up the incline of the vertical flange a, and when over the notch therein it will drop into said notch. By depressing the'onter end or handle, b, the shoulders dd bear upon the front face of the flange, and act to draw the meeting-rails of the sashes firmly together and to hold them .until released, in the manner hereinbefore described.
Ordinarily sash-fasteners having a cam for drawing the meeting-rails of the sashes together are operated by swinging the sweep horizontally to bring it-into positiou, and sometimes the cam binds the'sweep so hard thatit is either impossible or inconvenient toswing the sweep around into position for locking. In
my device the sweep is free to be brought into the position for locking, and the binding or drawing of the rails together is all done after the sweep is in position.
I am aware that a hinged sweep whose outer end rests in a notch in the keeper, butwithout the binding arrnngement, isold in sash-fasteners, and I hereby disclaim the same.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the keeper having the notched vertical flange inclined on its outer face, the sweep having hinged outer end, with projecting shoulders for engaging the inclined
