UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
JONATHAN S. CHRISTIE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
SAFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 270,888, dated January 23, 1883.
Application filed May 31, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,JONATHAN S. CHRISTIE, ofBoston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Safes; and] hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention has reference to an improvement in that class of fire or burglar proofsafes in which books and valuables are placed to protect them against fire.
The invention consists in providing such safes with a special removable cabinet, constructed to receive files or temporary binders, in which letters, orders, bills, and other papers are secured and retained until the same have been entered on the books, or have been otherwise disposed of, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
In the ordinary transactions of business letters, telegrams, orders, bills, and similar papers are received and require some time to be properly attended to and disposed of. Such papers are usually placed into files or temporary bindersuntil they are either answered, entered on the books, or, if orders, filled and then entered on the books.
In safes as heretofore. constructed divisions have been made to receive the regular books and papers; but, so far as I am aware, a safe has never heretofore been PIOX-ldGtl with a removable cabinet constructed with a special View to keeping in a single receptacle, which may be removed from the safe or replaced therein, all of the important papers referring to current business.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the interior of a safe constructed to receive the cabinet containing the files. Fig. 2 is a. perspective view showing the cabinet containing the files.
In the drawings, A is the safe proper; B is thesat'e-door; C is the cabinet containing the files; D D are the files; E E are the partitions separating the files, and F F are the handles by which the cabinet can be withdrawn. gg is a frame into which the cabinet is set.
The cabinet is so constructed that it can be removed and placed on a desk or table during the working-hours.
By this improved construction of the safe the files containing papers referring to the current business will be always replaced in thesafe, and in case of a fire the same will be preserved.
The cabinet may be arranged to receive the files standing in the vertical position, as shown in Fig. 1, or in the horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 2. i
The partitions E E are arranged parallel to each other and are cutout in the center, so as to allow the hand to grasp the files readily, and the handles F F are hinged so as to fold against the files and economize room.
Having thus described myinvention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the safe A, having the framing g g, of the cabinet C, divided by the partitions E E, and constructed to receive the files D D, said cabinet being provided with folding handles, so that the same can be removed-from and. set into the-safe and into the frame 9 g, as and for the purpose described.
In witness whereofl have hereunto set my hand.
J. S. CHRISTIE.
