Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN s. BIRCH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SPECTACLE-CLEANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 270,885, dated January 23, 1883,
' Application filed October 24, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. BIRCH, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spectacle-Cleaners, of which the following is a specification. 7
My invention consists of a pair of rubbingpads covered with chamois-skin or other suitable material for rubbing spectacle glasses, said pads being constructed in suitable size and otherwise adapted for rubbing the glasses between them by the thumb and finger, and being suitably pivoted together by spring or other shanks or stems to be retained in the proper relations to each other to be applied and used in the most ready manner, and for a means of connecting them to a safety cord or chain of any kind, all as hereinafter fully described, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan view of my improved spectacle-cleaner, the parts being closed one over another. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, the parts being swung open on the connectingpivot. Fig. 3 is a side elevation. Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation of the device together with a spectacle-eyeglass between the pads. Fig. 5 is an inside elevation of a back for one of the pads. Fig. 6 is a side or edge view ofFig. 5. Fig. 7 is a plan view of the cleaner constructed for screwing the back in the ring of frame for securing the skin. Fig. 8 is a side elevation of Fig. 7. Fig. 9 is a section of one of the pads; and Fig. 10 is a section of the device, showing an arrangement inwhich the back may be sprung into the ring.
l'make two pads, a, with facing or lining b, of chamois skinor other approved material, for rubbing the glasses cof spectacles, providing said pads with spring-arms terminating in a. pivot-joint, e, at the end, adapted to allow the pads to spring open and grip the glass between them, as in Fig. 4, and to be shifted forward and backward on the surfaces of the glass by the thumb and finger for rubbing it clean.
The device will have an eye or link, f, by I The pads may be constructed in various ways: For instance, a ring, g, of angle-shaped bar, to receive the disk of skin, and connected to the pivot-joint eby an arm, k, may be used with a back, i, of wood, stone, metal, or other material, also connected to said pivot by an arm, j, the said arm being set to press the back into the ring and grip the margin of the skin against the flange k, said flange having a notched edge, I, and the back having points m to secure the skin.
The back 73 may screw into the ring g, as in Figs. 7, 8, and 9, to grip the skin against the flange h, the points or and stemj being dispensed with, and said back being provided with little knobs n, by which to screw itin and out with the blade of a knife or other convenient instrument whenever it may be required to change or renew the skins.
The ring 9 may be made as in Fig. 10, so that the back may be sprung into it to secure the skin.
I donot limit myself to the particular construction of the-device, the essential feature of which is a pair of rubbing-pads pivoted to- 7 gether in the manner described, and being adapted to rub and clean the glasses of spectacles in the manner shown. a
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The improved eye or spectacle glass cleaner consisting of a pair of rubbing-pads pivoted together, and being constructed and adapted to rub and clean the glasses of spectacles, substantially in the manner described.
2. The combination of a pair of skin or equivalent lined pads, a, spring-arms, and a connecting-pivot, c, said spring-arms being arranged to cause the pads to grip an object between them, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
'JOHN S. BIRCH.
