1 Claim. (Cl. 311-41) This invention relates generally to household accessories and pertains more particularly to an improved form of multi-purpose sectional table.
The primary object of this invention is to provide an improved form of table of the knock-down or sectional type particularly suited and adapted for use in conjunction with efiiciency apartments or in rooms of limited space, the table being capable of extension at both sides and one end thereof, and further having its main top portion pivotally mounted for folding away to an out-of-use position.
Still another object of this invention is to provide an improved form of sectional table wherein the extension portions are provided with means for removably receiving extensible leg members for use either in conjunction with the main table or separately as benches.

A pair of cross members 18 and 20 are secured at their opposite ends to the respective side leg members and these cross pieces are disposed in V- relationship so as to form a receptacle which may be conveniently utilized as a magazine rack or for receiving various of the hereinafter described extensions or leg members.
An upper cross piece member 22, having affixed to its 3 ends triangular side plates 15 and 17, is mounted in vertical slots formed in the upper ends of the leg members 10 and 12 and an L-shaped bracket 24 is secured to the upper surface of this cross piece adjacent one side plate 17 as shown more clearly in Figure 9. The opposite side plate 15 is provided with a housing member 26 which overlies the top edge of the cross piece 22 in the manner shown and a sliding pivot pin 28 terminating at its outer end in an enlarged head 30, projects through said plate and said housing for engagement in an angular bracket 32 3 secured to the under side of the table top indicated gencompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like the plane of section line 2--2 of Figure 1 and further showing in dotted lines various adjusted positions of the main table top portion;
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the table top and extensions in fully assembled relation;
Figure 4 is a vertical section taken substantially along the plane of section line 4-4 of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of one of the side extensions;
Figure 6 is an enlarged sectional view showing the manner of attachment of the leg members.
Figure 7 is an enlarged vertical section taken substantially along the plane of section line 7--7 in Figure 1 showing the manner of connecting one of the side extensions;
Figure 8 is an enlarged perspective view showing the connection of the brace member;
Figure 9 is an enlarged vertical section taken along the same plane as Figure 4 but with the side extensions removed;
Figure lO is a perspective view showing the table in use as a drafting table;
Figure ll is a perspective view of the table assembled with two side extensions and showing the bench members in position for use;
Figure 12 is a perspective view of the table with one narrow side extension and one wide side extension;
Figure 13 is a perspective view of two bench members arranged in end-to-end relation, forming a buffet table; and
Figure 14 is a perspective view of two of the bench 1 links in the manner shown.
erally by the reference character 34 as by the fastening elements 36. A spring 38 within the housing is secured at one end to the pin 23 and abuts at its other end against the inner surface of the side plate 1.5 for normally maintaining the pin in the position shown in Figure 9. The These together with other objects and advantages which other bracket 24 carries a pivot pin member 40 which is received pivotally in a corresponding bracket 42 which is secured to the under surface of the table top 34 as by the fasteners 44.
By this construction it will be manifest that the table top 34 may be bodily removed from the leg assembly when desired by merely manipulating sliding pin 28.
Referring now more particularly to Figures 1 and 8, it will be seen that a brace assembly indicated generally by the reference character 46 is interposed between the leg 10 and the table top 34, this brace assembly including an upper link 48 pivotally secured to the table top, a lower link 50 pivotally secured to the plate 15, and an intermediate link 52 interconnecting the upper and lower The pivotal connection between the intermediate link and each of the upper and lower links is quite tight so as to provide sufficient frictional interengagement therebetween to insure that the table top remains in the angular position into which it is adjusted. A bumper member 54 is provided along one edge of the leg member 10 in the path of movement of the lower end of the link 50 so that when the table is positioned as is shown in Figure 10, the bumper forms a stop member, this position of the table being particu- 7 upper and lower sections and 62 respectively with the upper end of the lower section being of reduced diameter as indicated by the reference character 64 for frictional reception within the lower end of the upper member 60. It is to be understood that the leg members when used in conjunction with the table top will be utilized in the fully extended position, that is, with the upper and lower members interengaged.
It will be manifest that either or both of the socket members may be utilized, as desired.
Referring now more particularly to Figure 5, the reference character 66 indicates generally one form of side extension which may be utilized in conjunction with the table top and which includes an elongated strip of material provided on its under surface with an L-shaped bracket member indicated generally by the reference character 68 which includes the depending leg members 70 which are adapted to engage against the inner surface of the side plate members 15 or 17 in the manner indicated more clearly in Figure 7 so that the inner edge of the extension 66 tightly engages the corresponding side edge of the table top 34 to maintain the extension in place. This side extension may be of a length equal to the length of the table and one may be provided at each side thereof as indicated in Figure 11 or the side extension may be longer than the corresponding side of the table top as shown in Figure 3 and the extension may be further provided with wing nut members 72 pivotally secured adjacent the inner edge thereof to be rotated for positioning beneath the table top 34, enhancing the securement of the extension to the table top.
34 from the associated leg assemblies or when it is desired to pivot the table top to the out-of-the-way position as substantially shown in dotted lines in Figure 2, the connection between the upper brace link 48 and its associated bracket 96 on the table top is disconnected. The bracket 96 carries an outwardly extending pin 98 provided with a circumferential groove into which the hook end portion of a pivot latch 100 pivotally secured as by pin 102 on the link 48 is received. In either of the aforementioned positions this bracket connection must be removed.
A strip of webbing 104 or the like is provided on the upper cross piece 22 in the manner shown most clearly in Figure 4, the purpose of this strip of material being to firmly secure the upper ends of the longer of the exten- As shown more clearly in Figure 3, another form of side extension 74 may be provided which includes a tubular member 76 rigidly secured to its under surface and provided with a set screw member 78, the tubular memher being adapted to receive the free end of a rod member 80 pivotally secured as by pin 82 between bracket members 84 secured to the under surface of the table top 34 and normally maintained and positioned thereon by the clip members 86 in the manner shown. When the side extension 74 is utilized, the rod 80 is extended to the dotted line position shown in Figure 3 and the extension is slid into engagement with the corresponding side edge of the table top with the rod being received in the tubular member 76 and secured thereto by the set screw 78. Additionally, both the table top and the side extensions 66 and 74 respectively may be provided with loop brackets 88 and associated set screws 90 to receive and be secured to a support bar 92 in the manner shown. Also, the under surface of the side extension 74 is provided with a plurality of the previously described socket members 56, these socket members being arranged in triangular relation in the manner shown with two at one end of the extension and a single one at the other end of the extension. By this construction, leg members may be provided as additional support means for the table assembly, or the rather wide side extension 74 may be utilized separately with either long or short legs as indicated in Figures 13 and 14.
As seen most clearly in Figure 3, an end extension indicated generally by the reference character 94 is provided for the table assembly with the various component extensions as shown, namely, the extensions 66 and 74, and this extension is provided with socket members 56 in the manner shown and is additionally provided with a series of the support bar members 92 previously described and a pivotal rod member 80, the under surface of the table top 34 being provided with the tubular member 76 and associated set screw 78. In this manner it will be manifest that the end extension may be rigidly secured to both the table top and the side extension member 74.
When in use, it will be preferable to utilize each of the corner sockets 56 with associated leg members when the sion members in place when the lower ends are disposed in the receptacle provided between the cross pieces 18 and 20 as will be readily apparent.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A table comprising a pair of side uprights, a pivot pin extending inwardly of each of said uprights, a table top having 21 depending car at either side thereof pivotally receiving the free end of a respective one of said pivot pins, :1 side extension member, said extension member having 21 depending flange engaged against the inner surface of one of said uprights maintaining the inner edge of the extension in engagement with the corresponding side of the table top, and a pair of spaced latch members pivotally secured to the undersurface of said extension adjacent the inner edge thereof, whereby portions of said latch members project beneath the table top.
