Description
Nrrno STATES Aren't Fries.
REBERTO n. JOHNSON, DIP-PALESTINE, TEXAS.
HAND-CAF'L SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 270,678, dated January 16, 1883.
Application filed September 12, 1832. (No model.)
T 0 all "whom it may concern Be it known that I, REBERTO H. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Palestine, in the county of Anderson and State of Texas, have invented a. new and useful Improvement in Hand-(Jars, of which the following is a specification;
My invention relates to that class of cars that are usually propelled by hand-power, and are used in repairing and the construction of railroads; and the objects of my invention are, first, simplification of machinery necessary to operate the car; second, to red ace the weight and cumbersome parts from the top of the car; third, to afford the proper adjustment of the handles, so that one or all of them may be removed when it becomes necessary to upset the car; fourth, to provide a car that is capable of having all its machinery removed from above the floor, so that it can be used to carry ties or iron without interfering with its running-gear; fifth, to increase strength and reduce the cost of construction. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in' the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top view, withthe flooring broken away to show the gearing. Fig. 2 is side elevation illustrating the mechanism. Fig.3 is an end view, and Fig. 4 illustrates the lever, L, both back and side view, and also the rocking lever A.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts throughout the drawings.
The sills T T and S S, Fig. 1, and the end sills, B, Fig. 3, constitute the frame-work of the car.
Between the sills S S is placed the rocking lever A, with its journals resting one on each sill, and having the proper bearings, 860., attached. Connected at the lower or small end of this lever is one end of the connecting-rod B, the other end of which is attached to the crank of the driving-wheel D, that is preferably made with cog-teeth upon its periphery, which are adapted to engage with the cogteeth of the pinion E and compel it to rotate in action with the said driver, and as the pinion E is keyed rigidly to the axle F, (or
in the usual up-and-down motion.
By having two ofthe rocking levers A and additional gearing there can be used two of the handle-levers L and double the drivingpower, it" necessary. When the levers L are removed the top of the car is free, and the dump-rest N, Fig. 8, may he laid across the car and secured in position by the books attached to block G,0r anyotherdevice thought best to adopt. The rest-blocks Q are then attached in place and the dump P put in position and secured from tipping by the latch O, and the car is ready to be used as a dumpcar, in operation it being only necessary to remove the latch 0.
H is a cushion of rubber, against which the journal-bearing I rests, and J is a collar which holds the same in position in the axleguard K. v
It will be readily seen that a car of this construction has many advantages over the common hand-car now used, with the walking-beam attachment, for while the common one is only a hand-car I claim mine to be a good dump-car and a most perfect hand-car, built upon the most economic principles, and the advantages obtained are too numerous to mention herein.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A hand-car constructed with a framework, as herein described, and provided with a propelling mechanism' consisting of the bent pipe-lever L, in combination with the rocking lever A, providedwith the socket M, the connecting-rod B, driving-wheel D, and pinion E, all as described and specified.
2. A car constructed with a frame-work, as provenient in hand-cars, as above described, herein described, and provided with a porta- I have hereunto set my hand this 22d day of ble dumping attachment consisting of the August 1882. dump-rests N, side blocks, G, rest-block Q, REBERTO H JOHNSON.
5 dumps P, and slide-latch 0, all as described, \Vitnesses:
and for the purpose set forth. A. R. HOWARD,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing im- E. S. MARSHALL.
