J'AhLIES lli. HUGHES, OF ASHLAND, AND JEHU D. WILLIAMS, OF BENTON, KENTUCKY.
DUMPiNG-CAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,368, dated February 21, 1888.
Application filed October 10, 1887. Serial No. 251,890. (No model.)
To @22 whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES M. HUGHES and Jnnu D. WILLIAMs, citizens of the United States, residing at Ashla-nd and Denton, in the counties of Boyd and Carter, respectively, and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumping-Cars; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to dumping-cars; and it has for its object to provide a simply-constructed, easily-operated, and durable car, by which the contents of the body or bed of the car may be readily dumped on either or both sides of the track, as desired; and it consists of the partsand combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved car, with one bed removed and the other in a dumping posit-ion; Fig. an end elevation showing one bed in a dumping position; Fig. 3, a side ele vation; Fig. 4-, a plan view with bed removed; Fig. 5, a view of the bottom of one of the beds; 6, a detail perspective view of the locking device, and Figs. '7 and 8 detail views.
Similarletters referto similar parts throughout the several views.-
Although our invention will be herein de scribed in connection with a handcar, we desire it understood that we may apply it to a hat car forhauling freight, such as stone, sand,
coal, &c., or to a construction-car.
A represents the wheels, B the side beams, and C the cross-beams, of an ordinary handcar with our improvements thereon. Cross bars c,lor binding the side beams to the cross beams, are bolted at each end of the car.
On the crossbeams O we rigidly secure, by means of bolts, beams D, having their ends in clincd, as at a, and to these inclined ends we bolt hooked bearing-irons I), so that the upper edges of their hooked ends will be flush, or nearly so,\vith the upper surface of the beams D. To the bottom of the bed or bodyE of the car a beam, 0, is secured, and to this beam a bar, (I, is attached by means of the strap-irons e, which are bolted on each side of the bar to said beam 0. The bars rest in the hook-irons b, so as to form a hinge-joint, and the cars turn thereon when dumped, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. To prevent the cars or beds being turned completely over in dumping, one end of a chain, f, is attached to the bottom of the car near its center, longitudinally, and its other end passes through a perforation, s, in a longitudinal beam, F, which is secured be tween the cross-beams C and D, and, as shown in Fig. 8, is secured to an eyebolt, 9, between washers on which a spiral spring, 71/, is mounted to deaden the jar of the bed when it is dumped. The beds E, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, occupy only about one-half the hand-car, and are pro vided with handles Z, for dumping them and for returning them to their position on the hand-car aft-er they are emptied. They are also provided with a sliding gate, m, of any desired or known construction.
To the rear sides of the beds E, at their bottoms, is attached a series of spring-catches, n, as -niany as desired, and t0 the bar H, which is secured to the beams D, a series of rigid catches, o, are secured, corresponding in numher and position to the catches )1. In1mediately below the bar H arod, K, is journaled in any suitable manner in the beams D, and carries a series of eccentrics, p, corresponding in number and position to the spring-catches a, the eccentrics being secured to the bar by thumb screws, so as to be easily adjusted thereon, and to either or both ends of the bar a lever, r, is secured.
There may be any desired number of beds on a car, from one to six on a side, and the eccentrics may be adjusted to dump one or all of them at once on one side and then turned to dump the other side.
The device can be attached to any railway flat car or hand-car, and can be removed in a few moments without defacing the car in the least, so that the car may be used for any other purpose; and, further, the device can be ap plied to either or both ends of a car, so as to dump in the front or rear.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, in a dumping-car, of
the beams D, having the inclined ends, the H, having the catches 0 attached thereto, the
hook-irons b, secured thereto, the beams F, rod K, adjustable eccentrics p, and lever 1',
having perforations s, the chains f, eyebolts g, substantially as described.
spiral springs h, the beds F, strap-irons c, bars In testimony whereof we affix our signatures I 5 5 d, and means forlocking the beds to the frame in presence of two witnesses.
of the car substantially as described.
2. The combination, in a dumping-car, of the beams D, having inclined ends, the hookirons Z), the beams F, having perforations s, XVitnesses:
10 the chains f, the eycbolts g, springs h, strap- D. A. FIsHER,
irons 6, bars d, the spring-catches n, the bar JOHN G. MAIscH.
