FARE-BOX.

-SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 270,651, dated January 16, 1883.

Application filed November 30, 1881.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANoIs A. FARRELL, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fare-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

My improvements relate to a fare-box or an alogous article which is adapted to be carried around by a conductor' or collector to receive fares orothertariisand preclude the conductor or collector from appropriatin g any.

The improvements consist in the combination of a box or case provided with a mouth at the front side ofits top for the reception of fares or other tariffs a platform pivoted in said box or ca'se near the front and below said mouth, and adapted to be depressed at the back edge in tilting;` a series of curved or inclined gravitating fingers pivoted at the front side of said mouth, overlapping the front edge of the platform and forming guides to direct coins or other tariff, so that they will be deposited on said platform behind its pivots; and other gravitating fingers, pivoted at the back side of said mouth, as hereinafter fully described.

The improvements also consist in the combination, with the box or case and its platform and means, preferably consisting of a lever bearing upon the under side of the platform in v front of its pivots, for operating the platform and registering device.

The improvements also consist in novel details of construction, and a combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The upper end of the box or case is provided with a narrow mouth, O, into which fares may be introduced, and which projects above the top, at one side thereof. B elow this mouth is a tilting platform, D, supported by pivots 0r trunnions c near its front edge, and adapted to have its back edge depressed in tilting. The fares deposited in the mouth are caught upon this platform, and when the iatter is tilted drop down beyond its rear end into the lower part of the box or case. Vhile the fare is on the platform it may be seen through a transparent piece of glass extending from the base ofthe mouth across the top of the box or case. Y

E designates a series of gravitating fingers extending from a rock-shaft, d. When the box is turned front down ward o'r turned upside down front first, these lingers close over the inner portion of the Inouth andprevent money on the platform from escaping through the mouth. F designates another series of gravitating-fingers, extending from a rock-shaft, e. When the box is turned back downward or turned upside down in the direction of the back, these fingers close against the mouth and prevent the egress of money. The fingers E F are pivoted near opposite sides of the mouth, and when the box is upright they do not obstruct the passage through the mouth. The iingers F are inclined or curved rearward and direct coins upon the platform D baci; of the pivots c.

G designates an index-dial, which may be rotated to expose one or another of its numerals through an opening,f, in the box or case. On its shaft or arbor is affixed a toothed wheel, H, and with this engagesa pawl, I,which is held to the wheel by a spring, J. A stop-pawl, K,

prevents the rotation ofthe wheel and dial in nates a spring acting on the platform D in` IOO rear of its pivots or trunnions, and tending to hold it in a horizontal position. The entire registering mechanism and the lever M are arranged in front of and below the pivots of 5 the platform D.

The box may be held in the hand, and the hand is slipped through a leather or other suitable handle, I. W'hen thus held the finger rests on the protruding end ofthe lever, which projects between the top and bottom of the handle, at one side thereof. After a fare is deposited on the platform the protruding end of the lever M is depressed, whereupon the platform is tilted so as to permit the fare to pass beyond it, and the dial is moved so as to display the next numeral. Thus the number of fares is registered, and the conductor is prevented from abstracting any fares without being detected.

An audible alarm may be combined with the dial and platform, so as to sound when they are properly operated,and not otherwise. Another dial and toothed wheel may be used and combined with the former, so as to turn the distance from one of its numerals to the neXtat each complete rotation of the dial first named. This may be accomplished by providing the firstnamed dial with 011e tooth engaging with the toothed wheel of the second. As the first-named dial is numbered up to fifteen, the second dial will be numbered fifteen, thirty, forty-five, Smc.

It will be seen that by my improvements a very simple and desirable portable fare-box may be made, which will reduce the opportunity for pilfering enjoyed by conductors and others.

That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. The combination of the box or case A, provided with the mouth C near its front, the

platform D, pivoted near the front of the box or case and below said mouth, the curved or inclined gravitating fingers F, pivoted.at the `front side of said mouth, overlapping the front edge of the platform and forming guides to direct coins or other tariffs so that they will be deposited on said platform behind its pivots, and the gravitating fingers E, pivoted at the back side of said mouth, substantially as specified.v

2. rlhe combination, in a portable fare-box or analogous article, of a mouth at the front side of the top of the box, a tilting platform on 'which fares or other tariffs are received as deposited, and which is pivoted near the front of said box, and is adapted to be depressed at the back edge in' tilting, a registering device in front of and below the pivots of said platform, and means, substantially such as de scribed, for operating the platform and registering device, substantially as specified.

The combination, in a portable fare-box or analogous article, of a tilting platform pivoted near the front thereof, and adapted to be depressed at the back edge in tilting, a registering device in front of and below the pivots of said platform, and a lever bearing upon the under side of said platform in front of its pivots, and serving also to operate the registering device, substantially as specified.

4. The combination o1' the box A, the platform D, pivoted near the front of said box,the dial G and ratchet-wheel H, arranged infront ot' and below the pivots of said platform, the pawl l, and the lever M, bearing upon the under side of said platform in frontof its pivots, and connected with and operating said pawl, substantially as specified.
