SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 270,600, dated January 16, 1883.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY MGPHERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing'in the cit of Troy, county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Torches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates toimprovements in torches in which the torch-cup swings in a 10 frame constructed to revolve upon a suitable staff or handle, and more particularly tothe revolving socket by which the frame is conneoted with the handle.
The objects of my invention are to provide I a cheap torch so constructed that the relative positions of the pivotal supports, handle, and center of gravity of the torch-cup will cause the cup to assume an uprightposition without regard to the position of the handle by which it is supported. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation showing the torch complete. Fig. 2 shows the complete torch in the same position as in Fig. 1, except that the cup and frame with the revolving socket have been turned upon the handle a quarter-revolution. Fig. 3 is a perspective of the revolving socket, to which the frame or arms sup- 0 porting the cup is attached.

A is the torch-cup, made in the usual manner. The part of the frame supporting the 5 cup consists of two separate arms B and B. The upper ends of the arms have perforations or bearings G C for the pivots D D, projecting from the torch-cup at or near the top of its sides. The lower ends of the arms are riv- 4o eted or otherwise fastened to the projection L from socket S. The socket revolves upon the mandrel or headed pin P, the pin being forced securely into the end of the torch-handle E. The socket may be constructed of sheet or cast metal or of any suitable material, provided it is adapted to receive and revolve upon the pin P and has the leaf or lug L projected any desired length from the socket, to which leaf the arms of the frame are attached, as aforesaid. By attaching both arms of the frame to the leaf instead of to opposite sides of the socket, as heretofore constructed, any movement of the handle out of a vertical position tends to produce a quicker and more'certain revolution of the socket and frame upon the pin P, and the cup being pivoted at the I upper part of its sides upon the arms of the revolving frame will, by the force of its own gravity, always assume an upright position in whatsoever position the handle is brought to rest.
When desired the projecting leaf L may be made shorter and the arms B B fastened theretoin such a position that a plane projected through both arms would be diagonal to the 6 line of the socket and handle; or the arms may be bent over to the last-mentioned diagonal position. The position of the arms in Fig. 2
is shown diagonal to the line of the socket.
I am thus enabled to produce a cheap and 0 durable torch which, operates easily and perfectly by reason of the rigidity of the socket and its greater bearing-surface as well as its offsetting projection L.
I am aware that torches have been constructed with a bifurcated fork bent to one side of thelineofdirection ofasocketcontained in the fork and revolving upon a mandrel or pin in the end of the handle and supportinga swinging cup.
What Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a torch, the revolving socket S, having a projectingleafor lug, L, in combination with a cup-supporting frame attached to said leaf 8 5 or lug, and a suitable handle provided with a socket-pin, P, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
