CHARLES F. LAGOUR, OF GRASSY POINT, NEW YORK.
KlLN-HEAD GUIDE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 270,444, dated .ll'annary 9, 185. 3.
Application filed July 31, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GHARLESF. LACOUR,of Grassy Point, in the county of Rockland and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Kiln-Head Guides, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a front elevation of myimprovement, illustrating its use. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation ot'the same, taken through the broken line w 00, Fig. 1.
The object of this invention is to facilitate the setting of the green bricks in preparing brick-kilns, and also to promote accuracy in forming the heads of the kilns.
The invention consists in a kiln-head guide constructed with aframe having a close panel in its lower part and cross-slats in the middle and upper parts, and provided at its upper part with adjustable fastenings for connecting it with a. side prop of the kiln. The guide is also provided with cords for giving a true taper to the sides of the center arch, and with a guide-cord for adjusting it in line with its former position, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A represents one of the kiln-shed posts. B are the side props, which are attached to the posts A.
O is the frame of the guide, which is made of a length equal to the height of the kilnheads, and of a width equal to thethiokness of an arch. The lower part of the guide, for a height equal to the height of the fire-chambers ,'is provided with a close panel, D. The part of the guide above the panel D is provided with cross-slats E, attached at their ends to the side bars of the guide and placed at a distance apart equal to the height oftwo courses of green bricks.
To the top bar of the guide-frame (J, and to a cross-bar at the upper edge of the close panel D, are attached the ends of two cords, F, the lower ends of which are placed at a distance apart equal to the thickness of the lower part of the center arch, and their upper ends are placed at a distance apart equal to the thickness of the upper part of the said center arch. The cords F thus serve as guides in settingthe bricks of the center arch, so that the said arch will have a uniform inclination upon-both sides, as shown in Fig. 1. In setting the bricks for the'other arches the cords F are not used.
' G is a cord which passes through holes in the lower ends of the side bars of the guideframe 0, and is provided. with pins H at its ends to be driven into the ground. The cord G may be attached to the posts A, and is intended as a guide in adjusting the lower end of the guide E D E for another-arch, so that the guide will he in line with its former position and the headof the kiln will be true.
To the outer sides of the upper parts of the side bars of the. guide-frame G are attached long keepers I, through which and into or through the side bars of thefranie C are formed holes to receive the pins J, by which the shanks.
of the hooks K are hinged to the said keepers and side bars. The hooks K are designed to be hooked upon the upper side prop, B, and are made of such a length as will give the required inclination to the guide 0 D E,and consequently to the head of the kiln, the holesin the keepers I and in the side bars of the guideframe allowing the hooks K .to be adjusted as the height of the side prop, B, may require.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A kiln-head guide constructed substantially as herein shown and described, and consisting of the frame 0, having a closed panel, D, in its lower part and cross'slats E in its middle and upper part, as set forth.
2. In a kiln-head guide, the combination, with the'guide-frame 0, of the long 'keepers I and the hinged hooks K, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the said guide can be readily secured to the upper side prop, as set forth.
3. In a kiln-head guide, the combination, with the frame 0 and the cross-slats E, of the cords F, arranged with their upper ends nearer together than their lower ends, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby a true guide, when adjusted, can be kept in line with taper can be given to the center arch, as set its former position and the head of the kiln forth. kept true, as set forth.
4. In a kiln-head guide, the combination, CHARLES F. LACOUR. 5 with the perforated lower ends of the side bars SVitnesses:
of the frame 0, of the cord G, substantially GEO. W. \VEIANT, J as herein shown and described, whereby the A. BICKELMANN.
