Claims priority, application Great Britain August 23, 1951 6 Claims. (Cl. 20-69) Although applicable for use as a beading or moulding the present invention is particularly concerned with strips intended for sealing motor and other vehicles or other structures against the ingress of draughts, dust or moisture or in cases where it is desired to segregate compartments one from the other and particularly in cases where there is danger of iire.
The strip forming the subject of the present application has certain features in common with that forming the subject of certain of my earlier patents, notably Patent No. 2,554,452, in that it makes use of a channel shaped clip for application to a ange or other support. Although it is within the scope of the invention for the channel shaped member to make frictional engagement with the ange or other support it is preferred that this connection shall be of a positive interlocking character as is visualised by the above numbered patent, the channel shaped member having an inwardly directed lip which overrides a projection or a series of projections forming a part of the ange or of parts associated therewith.
A strip in accordance with the present invention comprises a channel shaped attachment portion adapted to embrace a flange or equivalent part of a support, an effective portion of rubber or other soft but resilient material and a fabric or other covering extending around said eiective portion and a part or the whole of said channel shaped member and secured thereto by stitching and/ or by suitable taugs pressed out of the channel member.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect the invention is hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figures 1 and 2 are sectional views illustrating two alternative constructions in accordance with the invention mounted in position on an associated ange.
In the two constructions illustrated the channel member 1 is bent up from strip metal and is formed with an inwardly directed lip 2 extending throughout its length, the effective part 3 taking the form of a length of rubber or like tubing lying adjacent to and parallel with the channel 1 and being held in position by the covering material 4. The effective part may alternatively be disposed along the top of the channel instead of at the side.
The covering material 4, preferably a woven fabric, encloses not only the eective portion but also the greater part of the metal channel member 1, the fabric being turned inwardly around one edge of the metal channeling as at S. The covering 4 is folded back on itself at 6 to form a downwardly depending lip and thence upwardly to lie adjacent the channel. The eiective part and covering are in the case of Figure l located by lines of stitching 7, suitable holes 8 for receiving the stitches being punched in the channeling.
ln the case of Figure 2 the stitching is dispensed with, the channeling being formed with pressed out tangs 9 which pass through the covering and firmly secure the latter in position on the channeling at the same time maintaining the effective portion in position.
ln both constructions the channeling is shown in position on a metal ange 10 the latter carrying a continuous lateral projection 11 over which the lip rides with a snap-on action thus locking the strip in position and preventing its removal except by distorting the channeling. The projection 11 may, however, not necessarily be continuous and may consist of a series of spaced projections or as a further alternative the projections 2,702,416 Patented Feb. 22, 1955 may be formed separately and take` the form of a series A,ti ange may be a simple frictional engagement.
When intended for association with a tireproof bulkhead or other purposes where there is danger of tire it is preferred to construct the eiective portion from silicone tubing and to employ an asbestos fabric or other tire resisting covering material. Furthermore, the channeling although preferably formed from metal may at any rate in the case of Figure 1 be of any other suitable material.
To enable the strip to be readily bent around curves of small radii the channeling may be slit transversely from its opposite edges, the slits being staggered and extending throughout the major part of the width of the strip from which the channeling is formed, the formation of the slits being shown in the drawings accompanying my prior patent above referred to. Furthermore, instead of being of tubular form the eiective portion may be composed of sponge rubber or other comparatively soft but resilient material.
I claim:
1. A sealing strip comprising a channel shaped metal attachment portion, one edge of which is formed to provide an inwardly directed lip, a soft but resilient eifective portion, a flexible covering closely enclosing both attachment portion and eiective portion except for said inwardly directed lip, and means for securing said covering to said attachment portion to maintain said elective portion in its operative position adjacent said attachment portion.
2. A sealing strip comprising a channel shaped metal attachment portion, one edge of which is formed to provide an inwardly directed lip, a soft but resilient effective portion, a flexible covering closely enclosing both attachment portion and effective portion except for said inwardly directed lip, said covering being turned over to enclose the opposite edge of said attachment portion, and means for securing said covering to said attachment portion to maintain said effective portion in its operative position adjacent said attachment portion.

A sealing strip comprising a channel shaped metal attachment portion, one edge of which is formed to provide an inwardly directed lip, a rubberlike tubular elective portion, a iiexible covering closely enclosing both attachment portion and elective portion except for said inwardly directed lip, said covering being turned over to enclose the opposite edge of said attachment portion, and means for securing said covering to said attachment portion to maintain said effective portion in its operative position adjacent said attachment portion.

A sealing strip comprising a channel shaped metal attachment portion, one edge of which is formed to provide an inwardly directed lip, a rubberlike tubular effective portion, a ilexible covering closely enclosing both attachment portion and eiective portion except for said inwardly directed lip, said covering being turned over to enclose the opposite edge of said attachment portion, said covering material being turned back on itself to form a lip projecting downwardly below the lip on the attachment portion and lying adjacent thereto, and means for securing said covering to said attachment portion to maintain said effective portion in its operative position adjacent said attachment portion.
5. A sealing strip comprising a channel shaped metal attachment portion, one edge of which is formed to provide an inwardly directed lip, a rubberlike tubular effective portion, a flexible covering closely enclosing both attachment portion and eifective portion except for said inwardly directed lip, said covering being turned over to enclose the opposite edge of said attachment portion, said covering material being turned back on itself to form a lip projecting downwardly below the lip on the attachment portion and lying adjacent thereto, said covering being sewn to said attachment portion to maintain said effective portion in its operative position relative to said attachment portion.
6. A sealing strip comprising a channel shaped metal attachment portion, one edge of which is formed to vturned over to secure the covering material to said attacbnient portion and maintain the effective portionin its operative position adjacent said attachment portion.
