1 Claim. (Cl. 229-16) This invention relates to a container or file for papers and notes, manuscripts, magazines, booklets and the like.

It is Well known that individuals and business organizations create and receive material in the form of papers and notes, manuscripts, maps, magazines, booklets that are kept because of value as a record of work performed or as reference material. To bind this material into book form may be too expensive or inconvenient. An object of the instant invention is to provide an inexpensive container to meet this need. Another object is to provide a container that may be sent with the material flat in an envelope to the user with instructions to assemble. A further object is to provide a container that may be stored flat when not in use and requiring only a fraction of the storage space required for the usual file container now available. Yet another object of this invention is to provide a container which is so simple in design that it can be set up in several simple operations in a matter of minutes. Other objects of the instant invention will become apparent in the course of the following specification.

In the attainment of these objectives, the container is made in two embodiments. In the first embodiment, the container is formed from a single flexible blank which is scored and severed to provide integrally formed bottom, back, side, front and top members. The side members are integrally formed with the sides of the back member and the top member is integrally formed with the top of the back member. Suitable provision has been made for reinforcing the bottom and front members and for releasably securing the top member over the reinforced front member. The second embodiment is like the first except that in the second embodiment the top member of the first embodiment has been eliminated. By forming the container without a top member and attaching it on the inner surface of one member of a book cover with the open top of the container directed toward the backbone of the book cover, no closure for the open top of the container is required.

The invention will appear more clearly from the following detailed description when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings showing by way of example the preferred embodiments of the inventive conept.

Figures 1 through 3 show the first embodiment of the container constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention and in which:

Figure 1 is a top plan view of the blank from which the container is formed;

Figure 2 is a view in perspective of the blank shown in Figure 1 completely folded into the container;

Figures 4 and 5 show the second embodiment of the container for use as a pocket with a book cover and in which:

Figure 4 is a view in perspective of the blank shown in Figure 1 but without the top member the blank being partially formed into a pocket and attached to a book cover;

Figure 5 is a view in perspective of the pocket shown in Figure 4 completely formed into a pocket in a book cover.

Referring now in greater detail to the first embodiment of the container shown in Figures 1 through 3, reference numeral indicates the blank, and 11 the container.

The blank 10 is a flexible strip of any suitable material which is scored along the lines 12 and 13 to form when folded a bottom member 14. The blank 10 is further scored along the line 15 parallel to the previously mentioned scored lines to form the top of the back member 16. 17 and 18 are further scored along the lines 23 and 24, the perpendicular distance between the scored lines 20 and 24 and between the scored lines 19 and 23 being the same as the width of the bottom member 14. By further scoring the blank 10 along the line 29 at a perpendicular distance from the previously mentioned scored line 15 equal to the width of the bottom member 14, a top member 30 is provided with an integrally formed portion over or closing flap 31 for releasably securing the top member over a front member 32 formed integral with the bottom member 14 along the previously mentioned scored line 13. 17 and 18, respectively, adjacent the free ends have a height equal to the height of the front member and then flare upwardly and outwardly adjacent the outer ends to the tops of the respective side members as shown in Figure 2. An opening may be made in the bottom member 14 for the insertion of a split pin (not shown) which may be reinforced on both surfaces of the bottom member with the head outwardly directed. Another opening 38 may be made in the closing flap 31 of the top member for attaching one end of a flexible lace to removably hold the closing flap securely in position when the free ends of the lace is releasably secured to the head of the split pin through the opening 36.

In operation:

The assembly of the container is then completed by turning the front member 32 upwardly along the scored line 13 at 90 to the plane of the bottom member 14 and over the

33 and 34. Any suitable means, such as the gum coated strips 40 and 40a may be used for binding the front member and the front reinforcing members together. By turning the closure flap 31 at 90 to the plane of the blank along the scored line 29 and the top member 30 at the same angle but along the scored line 15 a substantial closure is provided for the top of the container with the closure flap providing a means for holding the top member in position. A lacing 39 (Fig. 3) is inserted through the opening 38 in the closure flap and secured therein by any known means with the free end of the lacing of the lace releasably secured around the protruding head of the split pin.

In the second embodiment of the container shown in Figures 4 and 5 where the container is used as a pocket for a book cover, reference numeral 60 indicates the book cover, and 61 the container or pocket.

The book cover 60 is of a known type having the front cover 62, the backbone 63 and the back cover 64. The book cover may also have the retaining member 65 on the inside of the front cover for the removable insertion of the front cover of a book (not shown). The book cover could also be a loose leaf ring hinder, the rings not being shown.

The container or pocket 61 is similar in all respects to the previously described container of the first embodiment except that the top member and the closing flap integrally formed therewith have been eliminated.
