1 Claim. (Cl. 38-127) This invention pertains to a combined ironing board and cabinet, wherein means are provided for enabling the positioning of the ironing board at various selective levels.

An object of this invention is to provide a combined ironing board and cabinet with an ironing board which may be selectively moved to any one of its operative horizontal positions without disconnecting its attachment to the cabinet.

Another object of this invention is to provide a combined ironing board and cabinet in which the ironing board may be readily moved from one selected horizontal position to another.

Other objects and advantages will become apparent when the following description is read in conjunction with the drawings.

Figure 1 is a sectional elevational view of a combined ironing board and cabinet constructed according to the present invention, and mounted in a wall; the solid lines indicating a horizontal operative position of the ironing board, and the dotted lines indicating another horizontal operative position and the stored position of the ironing boar Figure 2 is an enlarged cross sectional plan view, with parts broken away, of the cabinet and wall shown in Figure 1, showing the ironing board extending through the door opening of the cabinet with the hinged door in the open position.

Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the brace and 1ironing board interconnecting means shown in Figure Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference numerals are used throughout, the reference numeral designates generally a combined ironing board and cabinet constructed according to the present invention and mounted in a wall 11. The cabinet 7 includes upstanding side walls 12 and 13 which are arranged in spaced parallel relation and supported by the wall studs 14. A back wall 8 extends between and is secured to the side walls 12 and 13. The front face 6 of the cabinet 7 has a door opening which is closed by a door 9 hingedly connected to one edge of the opening, as shown in Figure 2. Each of the side walls 12 and 13 is provided with a slot, 16 and 17 respectively, which extends longitudinally thereof, the slots being arranged in opposed aligned relation with respect to each other. The side walls 12 and 13 are further provided with vertically spaced notches 18 which are disposed transversely along one edge of each of the slots 16 and 17 and in communication therewith, as illustrated in Figure 1.

An ironing board 19 is arranged transversely of the side walls 12 and 13 and has a transversely extendin bar 21 secured to one end 22; the ends of the bar 21 being in the form of bearings 23 and 24, as shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2. The bearings 23 and 24 of the bar 21 are slidable along the corresponding slots 16 and 17, and each of the bearings is selectively seatable in the respective one of the notches 18. An upstanding brace 26 is positioned below the ironing board 19 and has its lower end hingedly connected to the side walls 12 and 13 by a pivot arm 27, as shown in Figure 1.

Positioned under the ironing board 19, remote from th end 22, is a U-shaped member 28 which is arranged longitudinally of the ironing board 19. The member 28 has the free ends of its legs 29 and 30 dependingly secured to the underface of the ironing board 19 with the bight 32 disposed in spaced relation with respect to said underface. A flat connector 33 projects longitudinally 2,700,835 Patented Feb. 1, 1955 from the upper end of the brace 26 and has an opening 34 extending transversely therethrough. The portion of the connector 33 adjacent the opening 34 surrounds and engages the bight 32 and the legs 29 and 30 of the member 28, thus permitting slidable movement of the connector 33 along the bight 32. The U-shaped member 28 and the connector 33 together form interconnecting means for operatively connecting the upper end of the brace 26 to the ironing board 19. A finger 36 projects from the bight 32 toward the end 22 of the ironing board 19 and is engageable with the connector 33 to provide a rest or stop.

In operation, the ironing board 19 is moved from its stored position, as shown in dotted line in Figure 1, to the horizontal operative position, shown in full line in Figure 1, by shifting the bearings 23 and 24 into the slots 16 and 17 and swinging the ironing board outwardly through the door opening while simultaneously raising the end 22 of the ironing board until the bearings 23 and 24 are seated in the desired pair of notches. When the operator is standing and the ironing board is thus in its uppermost position, shown in full line in Figure 1, the intermediate portion of the ironing board is supported by virtue of the abutting relation between the connector 33, the finger 36, and the leg 29 which forms a stop by itself or in cooperation with the finger 36. When the operator sits down, the ironing board may be lowered to the more suitable position, shown in dotted line in Figure l by slightly lifting its unsupported end until the finger 36 is aligned with the opening 34, whereupon the connector 33 is slid directly to its new position, where it abuts the leg 30 acting as a stop; the bearings 23 and 24 are simultaneously moved in the slots 16 and 17 to their new seat in the intermediate pair of notches.

What is claimed is:

In a combined ironing board and cabinet including upstanding side walls arranged in spaced parallel relation, each of said side walls being provided with a slot extending longitudinally thereof, there being vertically spaced notches in said side walls disposed transversely of one side edge of each of said slots and in communication therewith, an ironing board arranged transversely of said side walls when in an extended use position and having a bearing projecting from each side edge adjacent one end thereof, each of said bearings being slidable along the corresponding one of said slots and selectively seatable in the respective one of said notches whereby said board may be shifted to either a higher or lower extended use position, and an upstanding brace positioned below said ironing board and having its lower end hingedly connected to said side walls, the improvement consisting of an interconnecting means for operatively connecting the upper end of said brace to said ironing board, said means comprising a U-shaped member positioned under said ironing board remote from said one end thereof and arranged longitudinally thereof, said U-shaped member having the free ends of its legs dependingly secured to the under face of said ironing board and having its bight disposed in spaced relation with respect to said under face of said ironing board, a flat connector projecting longitudinally from the upper end of said brace and having an opening extending transversely therethrough, the portion of said connector adjacent said opening surroundingly engaging the bight and legs of said U-shaped member and slidable along said bight, and a finger projecting from said U-shaped member adjacent the bight toward said one end of said ironing board and engageable with said connector, said connector abuttingly engaging said finger when said ironing board is in its higher extended use position and abuttingly engaging the leg of said U-shaped member furthest from said one end of said ironing board when said board is in its lower extended use position.
